Official fairgambit travel thread. FINAL THOUGHTS (Long)

9:20 PM
Just finished a terrific 2.5 hour steak dinner at the Echo & Rig Steakhouse in Tivoli Village (off the Strip). Are we headed out for some Vegas action? NOOOOOO! We're headed back to base camp.:( No problem. I am a patient man. OK, I'm not, but I will be, for now. Tomorrow we hit the Bellagio for lunch. Hopefully, after that I can bust this town wide open.:)

You're in Vegas and you didn't have a Strip Steak? Actually, I think that means something different in Vegas.

;)

What most other BWI poster's pictures of their cross country trip w/ their wife look like:

Uhhh is she wearing an ankle "bracelet"? and yes my eyes averted everything else.

MONDAY AM:
Headed to Bellagio soon. One difficult Vegas adjustment. 0% chance of rain since we've been here and nothing but clear blue skies through Thursday when we drive to Tucson to see more of my wife's family. The temperature there will be 98° Thurs and 100° Friday. The good thing is both days there is a chance of rain.... 1%. :) It's bone dry in these parts. It takes its toll. Here is a 45 year old neighbor lady who never used sun screen.

Kidding! Just kidding!:):)
More later.

True but it's still hot. There are no clouds and little shade. Of course, people are inside most of the time, so it's bearable.

I've been to the desert many times but never in May. The closest was a trip to Tuscon in November. I played golf at 7:30 am and it was 70 degrees when I teed off. By the time I finished it was 95 degrees. I'd compare the comfort level to a 85 degree summer day in the northeast because there was no humidity so it wasn't a big deal. That said, I'm sure that it's brutal in the summer when temperatures hit 115 degrees. A propane torch is a dry heat too.

Yeah. I had the misfortune of Yuma in August for some military testing at the proving grounds there. Hit 117-120 almost daily. I live in Florida, so it ain't like I'm not used to hot.....humidity or no humidity that was Just. Freakin. Brutal.

This made me laugh because it immediately followed fair's pic of his 45 yo sun baked neighbor lady!!!
You're right. The timing is perfect!:D
In car (I'm not driving) and headed over to Gold & Silver Pawn Shop and Count's Kustoms. Then.... back to home base. Have not lost a dime gambling. I understand you actually have to place bets to do that and so far no one is interested in hitting the Casinos.:(

UPDATE 3
We started this Sunday with a trip to St Gabriel Catholic Church in Las Vegas. It is a Byzantine Catholic Church and, as I have noted previously on this board, my wife and I are Byzantine Catholic (similar to Orthodox in tradition, but led by the Pope). When we are on the road we always try to find a Byzantine church to attend. We ran into 2 other families from Pennsylvania who were also visiting. The mass, as expected, was the same as back home in Pittsburgh, with just a couple small local variations. This is the church. It is much smaller than ours back home, but just as welcoming.

As for the rest of the trip, it's been pretty much a snooze fest so far, literally and figuratively. After the show last night we drove around the strip and came home. My wife and I were still fighting jet lag and we needed an early start to make it to church today. Tonight we are hitting some fancy steak place and perhaps for the 1st time, a bit of gambling. Tomorrow is uncertain, but Tuesday is the Grand Canyon trip and Wednesday is Red Rock. I need to get some money down on both Penn State and Rutgers to win the National Championship. I figure the winner of the BIG RIVALRY game is a lock to win it all. I wish had more to report but it appears I left all the excitement back in Pittsburgh.;)
Are the hosts dispensed by a slot machine? They must go through a lot of holy water there. I bet their weekly bingo game is a borefest. Maybe you should go, liven up your vacation.

Just finishing up a week in the Palm Springs area today.....our latest tee time was 8:30AM and 5 of 6 rounds were over by noon. Never broke into a sweat all week. The temps are fine that time of day and feel about 8-10 degrees less than the actual temp because the humidity is non-existent. But it really does heat up later, the highest temps of the day are usually 4-6PM.

Palm Springs? You're one of them rich guys ain't ya?

Monday evening update...
Back at home base for supper. We just spent some quality time in Wagreens buying sun screen. Our trip to the Grand Canyon tomorow requires us getting up at 4:30 AM, so I am writing off this evening. 3 days in Vegas and not a dollar spent on gambling. Must be some kind of record.:(

Fair, you gotta get to one of the sports betting bars so you can get all your dollars laid on Rutgers. When they win the National Championship, you'll be known as the RICH guy!

Yes, terrific pics, but I can't show em'. It's a law or something in Vegas. What happens here stays here.;)

My first impulse was to give you an attaboy for not breaking the solemn WHIVSIV vow. Then I remembered you really have nothing to tell.

Walgreen's? Really? I didn't even know Vegas had a Walgreen's!

It, and the cash at the casinos, are two of the few "green" things I have found here.;)

How much have you won sir and be honest?
Seriously GLOV, I have not gambled at all. We've been spending almost all of our time visiting with my wife's family. We saw a show, ate lunch at the Belagio, walked the strip, drove by the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop & Count's Kustoms, and have spent a lot of time eating, but not one minute gambling. Tomorrow we go to the Grand Canyon, Wednesday to Red Rock, and Thursday we're off to Tucson. I may leave this town without gambling at all. That would only matter because, like many, I feel I can win, yet I know the house always wins in the end.

I've been to both places you mentioned.

Hit up the Crazy Buffett (Chinese/American style) on W.Sahara before you go 'fair'. Good stuff sir.

And take a hanky with you when traveling thru Summerlin!!!

That's the spirit! I always leave Vegas with more money than I arrived with.

(Thank God for ATMs!!!)

Ask someone in Vegas for a drug store, and you usually end up in a very different place.
