i know these are loaded questions with a million possibilities, but...

Can someone explain this whole Olympic redshirt thing to me? Trying to understand what exactly it means, who from our team REALISTICALLY might take advantage of it, and maybe some big guns from other programs that might REALISTICALLY take advantage of it. This topic just seems to lead to a lot of confusion for me and most people I talk to. Just looking for some clarification and solid info. Thanks in advance!

It's a special redshirt (in addition to your regular redshirt and any possible medical redshirt you qualify for) that becomes available in an Olympic year if you qualify

Qualifications (Source: FloWrestling): https://www.flowrestling.org/articles/6316414-so-whos-qualified-for-an-olympic-redshirt-so-far

Only confirmed Olympic Redshirt that I know of is Jaydin Eierman from Missouri. The rest is speculation so far but common names include Spencer Lee (though he has a regular redshirt available), Fix, Yianni.

From our team ... the only two that makes sense are Mark Hall and Mason Manville (for Greco Roman) From Hall's perspective though, I can't really see where he would fit in from an Olympic weight standpoint because his natural weight (79KG) is not an Olympic Weight. He is way too big to try to make 74KG now and I imagine way too small for 86 KG (not to mention that class will be stacked as it is)

In an Olympic year wrestlers who have had success on the international scene have the opportunity to take a year off from school and preserve a year of eligibility to focus on their goals of winning Olympic gold I believe they can still be around their college team in some sort of capacity but it’s just an opportunity for an athlete to focus on their goals without having to worry about school or collegiate wrestling

12.8.1.6 Athletics Activity Waiver. The Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement, or a committee designated by it, shall have the authority to waive this provision by a two-thirds majority of its members present and voting to permit student-athletes to participate in: (Revised: 1/10/91, 1/9/96, 1/14/12, 7/31/14)
(a) Official Pan American, World Championships, World Cup, World University Games (Universiade), World University Championships and Olympic training, tryouts and competition;
(b) Officially recognized training and competition directly qualifying participants for final Olympic tryouts;
or
(c) Official tryouts and competition involving national teams sponsored by the appropriate national governing bodies of the U.S. Olympic Committee (or, for student-athletes representing another nation, the equivalent organization of that nation, or, for student-athletes competing in a non-Olympic sport, the equivalent organization of that sport).

By "this provision", this paragraph is referring to the 5-year rule. Basically the clock stops, or pauses for the Olympic year for eligible student-athletes that decide to pursue the "Olympic Redshirt".

  1. Past national team members (top three from the World or Olympic Team Trials)
  2. Top eight at the 2019 Senior U.S. Open
  3. Top three at the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championship; or NCAA champion from a previous year AND top two from the 2019 U23 World Team Trials (must accomplish both).
  4. Previous Cadet, Junior, U23 world medalist

What is confusing about this list of qualifications is that they seem to combine two entirely different means of qualifying in one paragraph (#3). One way of qualifying is to be in the top three at the recently-completed NCAA championships. Another method of qualifying is the be both i) a past (2018 or earlier) NCAA champ and ii) in the top two from the 2019 World Team Trials. If they mean anything other than that, then they need a much better draftsman. Why they didn't make two separately-numbered paragraphs out of #3 is beyond me.

Although I am not necessarily advocating it, a reboot year similar to 2015 would have to be under consideration. A lot of moving parts, so time will tell.

Maybe it's the semi-colon? It makes perfect sense to me. This is how it's written in its original form (NOT the Flo article);

Top 3 at the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championship or NCAA Champion from a previous year AND top 2 from the 2019 U23 World Team Trials (must accomplish both)

Aaron Brooks would make sense for an Olympic shirt -- at least from a roster mgmt standpoint.

If Shak is the 184 starter, and Cael is shirting Aaron anyway, may as well declare it an Olympic shirt -- like what Zeke Jones did with Anthony Valencia in 2016. Preserve the regular redshirt if needed later.

LOL; makes all the difference in the world. Reminds me of the two sentences that best reflect the importance of punctuation.

Not confirmed, but I'd be stunned if Micic didn't take it.

Micic is already qualified as a JR world bronze medalist, and was a Serbia 2018 World Team member until withdrawing due to injury. As long as Serbia qualifies for the Olympics at 57 kg, he's all but guaranteed to be their rep.

I'd also expect the 2 freshmen heavies to Olympic shirt. Schultz was shirting this year behind Tanner Hall anyway, and he's a Greco specialist. Kerk just blew out his knee, so he's probably shirting as well.

I didn’t copy and paste the guys who qualified prior to NCAAs since I wasn’t sure if it was a pay article and didn’t want to just copy and paste their material.

Ah - great point. Can't imagine Aaron redshirting twice but does not hurt to have it in your back pocket just in case in the future.

You mean you can't see him shirting THREE times.

He'd presumably also be eligible for a 2024 Olympic shirt.
