Did you know?

The Olympic Trials for wrestling were held in Dallas (2000), Indianapolis (2004), Las Vegas (2008), and Iowa City (2012 & 2016) over the past 20 years. Pittsburgh shared the event with Concord, CA in 1992.

The 2012 event in Iowa City crushed the previous attendance record, with over 50,000 fans over the four sessions (each sessions attendance was counted separately). Finals-only attendance in Dallas (2000), the previous high, was 9434.

Iowa City earned the bid in 2016 due to the tremendous success of 2012, and responded with a new record attendance, 55,000 over the four sessions.

The ticket prices for all-session passes were; $70 in 2012, and $75 in 2016.

It is exciting to see the continued growth of the sport, though D1 collegiate wrestling is sputtering a bit. I suspect the revenue from the State College event, and the attendance, will be all-time highs for USA Wrestling.

Great info, and thanks! are you aware of the world championship rotation? Does this event ever happen in the US?

Lower bowl. about 8 rows up.
I do not know if this helps, but I bought all sessions to the NCAA's in Pgh in March. Only could attend Sat night. I sold the other five sessions for more than twice what I paid for them on StubHub.

Anyone have a couple of tickets at a reasonable price? I am hoping to watch my son compete. I thought I would be able to buy some through coach/wrestling club but so far coach hasn't been able to get anything from USA wrestling.

I think I counted 270 some tickets for resale on StubHub the other day. Prices are high and there are many other resellers.

Right now it is a seller's market.

Roar, you think D1 has been “sputtering?” Seems like all the coverage and new additions to D1 programs, it has actually been on the rise. Curious to hear why you think it’s sputtering and if I’m missing some info and data on this.

Nine D1 schools have dropped their programs since 2010, while ten have started or restarted over about the same period. The recent upstarts are great news, but we're still close to the all-time low.

Roar has more data.

pa is right on.

Just since 2000-2001
-- D I teams went from 90 to 77 (in 2019-20)
-- D II teams went from 41 to 60
-- D III teams went from 104 to 96
Division II is the only one growing. Keep in mind, since the early 70's, wrestling and many other sports (men's volleyball, men's gymnastics, etc.) have been decimated.

-- Since the early 1980's there's about half the number of D I teams.

-- Recent history shows the sputtering I referenced. Recent history; 2011 (80), 2012 (77), 2013 (77), 2014 (77), 2015 (76), 2016 (76), 2017 (76), 2018 (76), 2019 (75) show slow and steady overall decline. Adding Arkansas - Little Rock, and Presbyterian College in 2020 bring the total to 77, worth cheering for sure, but hardly a noticeable trend up.

Although it sounded like it, I wasn’t trying to question what Roar was saying by any means. I was genuinely curious about the data and info on this.

While this all points to D1 wrestling sputtering, coverage seems to be pushing the needle in the right direction. Attendance to D1 Nationals and the move into the trial phase of stadium venues seems to show wrestling is growing. Fingers crossed, momentum pushes the oldest and greatest sport into the next level and wrestling grows!!!

Just sounded to me like you were genuinely interested in learning how you could see things the way you do and Roar could feel differently.

IMO, it's difficult to compare TV coverage with the ease of individual mat streaming, versus the days of getting four channels on an antenna. What would viewership have been like with 90 teams' fans being able to pick a mat to watch? Hard to say. But, I agree, we are in aattendance and viewership uptick. Let's hope it continues.

I don’t see things differently from Roar on almost all instances. So no, I was not genuinely looking to prove myself right. I was genuinely looking for facts and data on this subject. As the original post was about. Wrestling growth.

Didn't sound questioning at all. Genuine interest.

Yes, attendance is up at NCAA's, but that's not going to save some programs that struggle to get "butts in the seats" at duals.

Just another reason why this board is the best!!! None argumentative and negative conversation. Real wrestling talk!! The best.

I am sorry in advance for likely a dumb question: which Nittany Lions are partaking in these trials?

I'm attempting to book my shit today (never been on a plane, nor to Happy Valley). Any hints or tips? Planning on walking/Ubering everywhere, as opposed to getting a car. I'm coming in early for Silver College, starting Wednesday.

Retherford, Nick Lee, Molinaro, David Taylor, Nickal, Snyder, Kirkvliet, and Nick Nevills are already qualified for the freestyle trials. Mason Manville and Ben Provisor are qualified for Greco.

I imagine that by either by winning NCAAs this year or finishing top two at the last chance qualifier at Millersville at the end of March, Nico Megaludis, Josh Rodriguez, Jason Nolf, Vincenzo Joseph, Dan Vallimont, Mark Hall, Aaron Brooks, Riley Lefever, and Anthony Cassar are still hoping to qualify.

Congrats on your first trip in to a wonderful place! Ubers are fine, with a little wait when big events let out. Walking downtown isn't too bad either, did it twice on Saturday but my wife and I like to walk.
What airport are you flying into? State College? It is small, I have never flown their since I live 2 hours away but pretty sure they have flights from at least a few major airlines like American, you will certainly be connecting from a hub city like Philly.

What is Silver College?

Silver College is an educational program that you have to complete before jumping up to Silver certification through USAW. Bronze gets me on the floor at Regionals and whatnot, but Silver allows you to try to get on overseas tour, camps, etc. It's just the next step I'd like to personally take in coaching.

The current flights I'm looking at are flying into SC from MSP, connecting at Chicago or some shit. Thank you for the info. I'm lost on most of this stuff.
