Olympic Trials Day 2 thread

As good as Jake Varner looked in the 1st match against Kyle Snyder... he looked listless and unmotivated in the next two matches. Jake looked wasted in the last match. Breathing very heavy... hands on his knees... no urgency.

He was totally spent. Wrestled a shartload of matches. Kinda not a level playing field but them's the rules

Trying to wrap my head around next year's NCAA tournament featuring TWO undergrad Olympians ... and at the 2 heaviest weights no less.

Good point.

Plus Zain training with the Olympic Team?

(Although he could train with Gorilla Hulk in Happy Valley)

Very true. Thought the same thing in the 2nd and 3rd matches when there was no urgency from Jake.

Lose with class... oh... he doesn't have any. That's not a subject at Cornell... Class 101.

Can someone post the final score please?

Geez, there is that site called TrackWrestling where you could look it up. Several other sites I could think of to look it up.

Round 1 match, 4-4, Varner wins on criteria
Round 2 match, 4-0, Synder wins
Round 3 match, 6-1, Snyder wins

Can someone post the final score please?

Varner beat Snyder in the first match of a best-of-three championship series, 4-4, on criteria.

Snyder was the aggressor early in the second match, but Varner defended patiently. Snyder took a 2-0 lead on penalty and push-out points. Snyder was in on Varner's leg off the second-period whistle and scored a quick takedown and held on for a 4-0 victory.

Snyder continued to be the aggressor in the decisive match, scoring an early takedown on a quick drag that seemed to catch Varner off-guard. Snyder just missed a second takedown, but got the pushout for a 3-0 lead heading into the second period.

Varner gave up a low takedown one minute into the final period and appeared out of gas. Snyder won the third match 6-1.

2nd 1:56 left 5-0 snyder

6-0

according to track, ends 6-0 snyder
Varner simply had nothing left after he beat Snyder the first time. Jake wrestled 5 matches it seemed and then had to wrestle Snyder. I really don't like that set up...Oh well....Varner has his Gold medal anyway...Simply was trying to run on an empty gas tank...Jake would beat him pretty good if that was his first match...Said after the match during his interview he had nothing left !!!!!

On one hand the format seems excessive, but on the other hand, if you are going to take a medal, you need to somehow get through the same kind of thing....Necessary evil. Jake had the plan, and it might have worked, but the meat grinder got to him.

Not sure why the challenger can't at least get a day's rest. When you're going for a medal everyone starts at the same place. This is wholly different.

I got that exact quote from an Iowa poster on HR today. In the same sentence where he agreed with me! Wth...
Which part?
I've never received a response like that.
I either get engaged in the communication, ignored or told to go back to my own board. As soon as one tells you to go away, 2, 3 or 4 follow suit.

Want to talk wrestling, I want to participate.
After grandkids and women, wrestling is my next favorite conversation topic.

?? I was told to go back to my own board, so you have gotten the same response. Doesn't matter, because I consider that trolling on their part.

I agree 100%. It's like having the higher seed in a best of 7 series in a sport start out with a 3-0 lead because they had a better regular season. Congrats to Burroughs and Snyder on what they did in 2015. But this is now 2016, why should they get such a huge advantage just by showing up? I hate this setup.

Probably no consolation to Smack, but he got beat by the best guy in the US.

Gonna miss him.

Generally it bugs me. If you don't genuflect properly and join in with collective thought you are "trolling". Juvenile and basically intellectually lacking. However, there are some folks over there that I enjoy reading their thoughts.

There are others that, well. How to put it nicely? Trying to follow the logic processes used to derive certain conclusions is entertaining.

Are you talking about this forum or an Iowa forum?

By far the touchiest fan base out there bar none. I am learning to pick my spots, especially after a devastating loss. I didn't post for a day after Metcalf lost because even if I would have said Metcalf was a champion, I would have been called patronizing.

I do enjoy discussing matters with knowledgeable fans. It sharpens my communications skills, and you learn a lot at the same time.

Just my opinion, but it has nothing to do with either one of you, nor does it have anything to do with the majority that post on HR. There's a couple of supposed PSU fans that make it rough for all of us (though I post very little there).

You're being too nice Roar. It is more than a couple PSU fans. Probably 6-8 people (more during NCAA's) that more than negate everything the rest of us do. I don't blame the average Iowa fan for painting us all with the same broad brush, but my feeling is that the more the good guys post post on there, the perception may change. It may take months or never, but there is a solid base of fans there like us and are starting to accept that we aren't a monolithic group of asshats. Something is seriously wrong in people's lives when they take unbridled glee in the failure of others.
