All things considered, Taylor has a half decent (or at least tolerable) draw; more tolerable in any event than his 2018 title run. He starts off with a tough match against Shabanau and then likely gets Amine (U. Michigan and Mark Hall's old regular foe before Amine moved up in weight). Sets him up for a semifinal with Punia of India and a final with Yazdani of Iran. If we go by rankings (rather than seedings) and use FLO as one metric, Taylor has to get by #5, #4, #6, and #1 to bring home gold.
Gilman will be a big underdog against probably the toughest guy at 57 KG. The good news is that the Russian will very likely make the finals and pull Gilman back into repechage. Hopefully, Gilman's foot has healed (or heeled) and he gives the Russian a dog fight.
Maroulis has a very tough draw since she starts off with the Chinese (who might be #2 in the word) and has to get by the #1 ranked Japanese in the semis if she reaches that stage. Maroulis hasn't looked in top form of late; hopefully, that changes on the Olympic stage, where she shined last cycle.
Action starts at 10 PM, Eastern time on Tuesday.
