I will see an orthopedist tomorrow, but I'm curious about any board comments beforehand. Five days ago I woke up with some minor soreness in muscle just below my right hip. I have no idea what I might have done to cause this. My approach at that time was to wait for it to go away. Well, it hasn't and only gotten worse. The soreness has gradually migrated down the thigh, and this morning I awoke to soreness in the knee. Soreness at the hip remains, but today there is no such feeling between the hip and knee. A couple days ago there was noticeable pain that prevented me from getting much sleep. However, for the most part the feeling has been soreness and a feeling akin to swelling, but there is no visible swelling. The worst part of this is that the leg barely supports my weight. I'm confined to the house, where I use a cane to move around. I welcome your informed thoughts.

I forgot to say....

I am not a doctor, and you should get yourself in to see one pronto.

Wishing you the best.

Is the pain strictly on the R/side of the R/upper thigh and hip, down to the same side of the R/knee...there are so many issues both muscular and neurologic that can elicit symptoms in these areas, that playing "telephone" is just that...playing with your problem. You definitely should be hands on examined, and you're heading in the right direction.
I can tell you, that even early L/4-5 spinal stenosis is a likely suspect, as is possible ilio-tibial band syndrome, and even sometimes a vascular(less likely) issue may be present. So rather than try the board members' guessing game, see your doc.
Best of luck to you.

Agree - could be related to a problem in the lower lumbar spine

or lower along the path of the sciatic nerve. Lots of different causes, although among the most common would be a disk herniation or spinal stenosis as previously mentioned, but there are several other things that can produce such symptoms that are neurological and musculoskeletal in etiology.

Yes, only the right leg. Thanks. Believe me, I'm going with doctors.

However, like with many topics, the views of this board can be interesting and informative.

I have the same issue. An MRI showed that it is a disc compressing a nerve that refers the pain down the front of my thigh. I am going to a chiropractor for DRX decompression. It has worked great...took about 3 weeks to fully fix the issue. I have had one recurrence a couple months after the initial one. Looks like 2 visits will fix it again (I think I'm causing it with bad posture at my workspace. Hope this helps.

I have spinal stenosis, three ruptured discs and two bulging discs, peripheral neuropathy in my left leg that presents as numbness from my thigh to my foot. I'm 65, 6'5" and 235 lbs. I'm fairly pain free and take nothing for my issues. I still golf twice a week, but can no longer put in 4 miles a day running (I can barely walk 18 holes).

So many things can cause the kind of pain you are experiencing, and unfortunately, the best medicine can do is test and eliminate causes sometimes. Even after they find the cause, it doesn't necessarily mean the cure is really an option. For me, they presented three options in the order of least advisable to most advisable... (1) surgery, (2) pain killers, and (3) live with it. I chose option 3.

3 yrs ago I had a ruptured disc in L5 area of lower back. The disc expanded to where it hit the sciatic nerve.

Shooting pain from left buttocks all the way down to the ankle. Foot was also numb and lost all muscle strength in my left calf.

Went thru 8 weeks of rigorous PT and narily avoided surgery.

Dangerous stuff, do not mess around and get in to see your doctor.

Just drove back from the winter in Florida. Drove 11 hours today from Dunn N.C. to New Fairfield Ct. with no incident other than back pain. I will have the chiropractor fix things up in a few days.
When you are as old as we are lots of stuff goes wrong so get it fixed and then head out on the next adventure.
