am having a problem. Verizon Fios router, desktop(wired) and laptop(wireless). The router and the desktop are working fine but the laptop has now lost it's display. After I added the laptop to the network, I had a display and everything was working fine(or at least I had a display). I then shut everything down and started it up again just to make sure it was going to keep working, and now I don't have any display. I just have a cursor on a dark display. Any ideas of what I may have done to lose the display, and how to bring it back? Also, I had a choice of 2 networks - one high speed and the other a slower speed. I chose the higher speed and was connected, but is there any way that the higher speed might not be working on an older(at least 6 years) laptop and be causing the "no display" problem? I can see that choosing an unacceptable network speed might not work, but I can't see why it would affect the display.
Thanks in advance for any serious answers.

What kind of laptop? Can you connect it to an external monitor and get a display?

Did you do a complete reboot since it went dark? Or just opened and closed the laptop. (Insert IT show clip here. ;-) )

Follow up- my Lenovo yoga has an issue with a display driver on a recent update where it defaults the display to minimum brightness. I have to hook it to an external monitor and roll back the display driver whenever it auto updates.

That doesn’t sound like a router issue. Find an hdmi cable and try to connect to your tv. See if that gives you anything.

It's an HP Elitebook 8560. I just shut it down using "control" and closed the case for a minute, then restarted it. Now there is a slight lightening of the screen when it powers up and the cursor appears.

This could at least show if it worked with the external monitor. Hmmm...if I unhook the desktop monitor and hust plug it into the laptop, should that work? And how do I adjust the display driver?

You're thinking way too much. If your laptop has an HDMI output and you have a cable plus another TV or monitor, that's everything needed to connect the two.

It's not the router. Shut the computer down and wait for it to go blank before closing the lid (if it doesn't go blank after 4 - 5 minutes close the lid anyway). Un-dock if docked, unplug if plugged, and then take the battery out and wait 2 - 3 minutes. Replace battery and start the machine.

DING! DING! DING! We have a winner! Agoodnap (and gamblepsu) has it right. I completely shut the unit down for at least 10 minutes, turned it back on, and lo-and-behold, it came on,booted up, and now I'm answering this on the laptop. Hooray!
Thank You, everyone!
