OT: How long is your commute?

How far do you commute to work each day? How far would you commute for a job?

I turned down a job offer in July mostly because the office is 50 miles from my home and working remotely really wasn't an option. And it's not an easy 50 miles. It took me 75 minutes to get there for the interview in the middle of the day. Can only imagine what the rush hour commute would be. I used to commute into center city from my home in Chester County, so I have had long commutes before.

So I got a call yesterday from the same company asking if I would talk to them again about joining their firm. So I agreed to meet for lunch near my place to talk to them again. They are coming to see me this time.

I currently have a really easy 12 mile, 20 minute commute mostly on back roads. I can bike it when the weather is nice.

Anyone have a 50 mile commute every day?
Currently 3.8 miles, with about 6 stops on a bad day - about 10 minutes. For 6 months on an IT contract I did a 120-mile commute each way almost daily mostly on I-80, so right about 2 hours. I wouldn't recommend over an hour each way for the long-term, and only if it's a really good deal and you can't/don't want to move for some reason.

From my living room chair to the bath room it’s only about twenty steps. I beat that path back and forth more times a day than Trump tells a lie. Keeps me busy though.

15 miles, 20 to 25 minutes depending on traffic. Live in Zion, work in State College.

35 feet

I think I am the original virtual employee. I started working for a company in SoCal in 1991. I remember using a product named Eudora Pro to dial into one of the original ISP and download my emails. It was the same line I used for voice so I'd disconnect after downloading my emails and then make my calls.

I love it.

Retired now, but worked 41 years at the same place. Longest -- 40 minutes (off hours, no traffic). Shortest -- 8/10 of a mile.

44 miles each way, one hour drive if I "left shift" my day and there are no incidents along the way. This time can ratchet up quickly. My 2015 Challenger R/T and Howard Stern makes the commute bearable. Fortunately, I can usually work from home 1-2 days/week.

Yes exactly 50 miles and takes 75 minutes

7 years

Wishing the last year telecommuting periodically has become an option

Only time drive is bad is when I want to get somewhere personably

But on most days it’s my ramp up and decompression time

Did the commute from Cheater County - via Spetic from the Malvern station for years - really started to hate people and Septa more and more every day - now work from home when not on the road - saved my sanity I think even though the Wife disagrees.

Used to go Reading area to king of Prussia back in the day. 55 minutes normally, 1:15 bad day. Ot’s Like a waste of life unless you can be productive on the phone during those hours. Also worth it short term if positives like a lot more money or opportunity are involved, but you WILL TIRE of it in 2 yrs or less. Also experienced it on the hiring end. Oh that commute is no problem. 2years or less, need to work out of house or gone.

To answer your question, 15 to 20 minutes now.

I’m at 35 miles and 45 minutes depending on traffic. Made a conscious choice to get far enough outside Columbus to afford the property I wanted, so no regrets. I can’t even keep up with all the podcasts I like to listen to, so it doesn’t feel like wasted time to me, it’s my relaxing time usually.

4 miles that takes 10 to 12 minutes depending on the other folks that I share the roads with.
Used to do it in 8 minutes but the local gendarmes had other ideas.
Earlier jobs had anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour. Didn't matter if I was driving, van pool, or public transportation (the T in Pittsburgh's south hills). When I got my current job, much less stress and my c company gets the benefit of extra Dibbs time because there is no commute hassle.

Usually it's about 100 seconds from the house to my favorite first tee. But on occasion my commute can be as long as 15 minutes. We have nine courses and one is way over on the other side of the village.

51 miles one way, 65 minutes three days a week, 103 miles one way, 115 minutes two days.
Been on the road like that the last five years and it’s funny how the short commute days feel like I’m getting a break, I get to leave at five-fifty instead five.
I hate the spring and autumn fog more than the winter weather.

Anyone have a 50 mile commute every day?

90 minutes...from North Shore of Long Island to World Trade downtown...brutal...

Usually 24 miles, 27 minutes, 92 miles, 88 minutes about 2-4 times a month ....

23 miles, 35 minutes, two lane roads about 6-7 stoplights.

Sounds familiar. 23 miles, 39 minutes, two lane roads, but only 5 stoplights. Maybe too many 40 mph roads are the difference. Bucks County to Hunterdon County, NJ

Used to be @ 5 minutes when I was teaching. Now it's walking down stairs to the main floor of house to the den.
I do travel to customers and prospective customers. Around 200 miles a week.
My HS FB coaching position is 27 miles away.
If anyone is a purchasing agent and need packaging materials, we could meet at a FB game in the Happiest of Valleys and talk business. Accountant said he'd find a way to write the 372 miles off taxes!!

OL

About 25 miles. But I typically only go to he office on Monday. Ride in takes about 35 minutes. Ride home is about 50 minutes. And that’s taking back roads. Main roads would be well over an hour

Other days I’m on the road. Can travel anywhere from 25 miles to well over 100.

Yep. Berkeley Springs WV to Martinsburg WV. 55 MPH roads the whole way except for one town which goes down to 35. Not much traffic and no cops. WV is a state which will give you a good leavin' alone.:)

93 - my great aunt lived in Lewisburg most of her life.....and she lived to be 105. Almost lived in three different centuries before she passed in 1999.

When a kid, I would play in the cemetery across from the laundromat a block or two from the Bucknell campus. In later years when back from Chicagoland for a PSU game I would often spend Sunday visiting with her.

My grandparents lived in Williamsport, probably drive Rt 15 100+ times over the years. Spent parts of first and second grade there while my Dad was in the Air Force in Iceland and Germany.

Beautiful country.....loved the drive from State College to Lewisburg!

CF - Just a thought.....if you can’t work remotely, see if they would be agreeable to a four day work week.

In addition to the day off, the four days you commute would put the morning and / or evening commutes outside the “normal” rush hour traffic.

Just my $.02.....good luck!

It takes me the best part of 45 to 60 seconds to get to work depending if I have to slow down for deer.
