OT - Hybrid Bike

Looking for some suggestions for a hybrid bike. I tried to research online, but was a bit overwhelmed with all of the different options. I am 45 and do not do much off-road anymore. Looking for something to ride with family and would like to keep the cost around $800, new or used...

Two years ago I bought a new Hybrid. It is a Cannondale and ran ~$650. My local bike shop probably had 20 different hybrids (Trek, Cannondale) in prices ranging from $300 to $1500. I suggest just going to your local bike shop and seeing what they have. Since it seems as if you are a causal rider, I'll bet they all feel 'about the same'. There are probably only a few in the $600-800 range for you. See which one feels the best and go with it. Ask the shop for their opinion too. They'll know a lot too

I don't get this commercial for Progressive, including the focus on pronunciation of "motor." Can anyone explain?

My son bought a Juicer bike about 3 months ago for college, and he is happy with it. His version cost $2000. There may be less expensive versions. There was a thread on this topic about 45 days ago. However, unfortunately, it appears that the search feature has been disabled for any threads that are more tha 3 or 4 days old.

One thing to consider is that there is a safety issue with these bikes. My son took a fairly nasty spill while driving on gravel about 2 weeks ago. (Fine now). These bikes are undoubtedly not very stable in wet or icy conditions.

Wet is one thing. Icy...unless you have tires with studs (not just knobs), you probably shouldn't be riding. The speed with which you can go down upon the application of even the slightest force to the pedals while on an ice patch is quite a thing to behold.

Funny Buck, my son has taken two spills at UVA so far. Must be a college thing. First one he calls me and says, "I think I broke my arm. What should I do?" Me: "Have you gone to the ER for an x-ray?" Him: "Should I do that?" Me: [Dumbfounded silence] (Luckily, no breaks, but he was sticking to the sheets for a few nights.)

A hybrid bike does not mean an electric or electric assist bike. It is a cross/hybrid between a road bike and an mountain bike.

I have a Specialized Crosstrail and it has served me well. I don't road ride as much anymore, don't feel safe out there with distracted drivers so my Jamis roadster is gathering dust. The Specialized is my go-to.

Whatever you buy, make sure you get the proper size and the bike shop fits it to you properly. Also, the bike shop should have demo saddles(seats) you can try out because the stock saddles are usually cheap and uncomfortable. Proper fit is essential if you want to like the bike and be able to ride comfortably. Lastly, as far as components, someone told me long ago, spend the most amount of money where your body will be contacting the bike. Saddle, shoes, peddles, handlebars and stem, etc. An uncomfortable bike sucks and will make you ride less and less
