OT: Tobaccos, Coffees, & Libations

I have an apple orchard in western Va. and a local cider maker harvests most of them. This year I made an apple mash and distilled it for Brandy. Proud of my first attempt at moonshine as I didn't run it through twice nor charcoal filter it nor age it in any type of receptacle (small barrel)... But it smells like apples and is pretty harsh. Not bad if mixed with real apple cider!

I was looking to get my dad some bourbon for Christmas. Any suggestions? Keep in mind that I'm in the booze black hole here in PA. Looking to spend 50-100.

Can I order online and have it shipped? I honestly don't know the answer to that.

Old GrandDad 114 is very good and is a steal at $32 here in Maryland.

I do not believe you can ship from the PALCB to someone’s home, but here is an option. It is not bourbon, but a Tennessee whisky, it is Mike Rowe’s brand, named after his grandfather, they will ship and a portion of the sale goes to Mike’s foundation helping people learn trade skills. Plus I thought it tasted pretty good while supporting a good cause.

Knobel whiskey

I stopped by the State Store in Duncansville today. They had quite a nice selection of bourbon. I found my dad's favorite, 1792. I also grabbed a bottle of Midstate Distillery 4 grain bourbon for him to try.

The worker said they had some higher end stuff behind the counter, but I didn't ask specifically what.

How could you not ask what was behind the counter, even just for curiosity sake? I believe they are starting to get a little bit of Blantons and sprinkling it around at different stores. I scored two bottles a few months ago back and just had a friend score two a week ago at a different store.

Anybody ever have the Philadelphia Eagles Bourbon? I bought two bottle for my son for christmas. I have no idea if it is any good, mostly got it for the novelty since he is a huge Eagles fan. They have two versions, Bird Gang and Shady McCoy, i got the regular, anyone ever try either? If the special was Saquon I would have gotten that one for sure.

My work purchased a single barrel of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked and had it bottled with our label and laser etched with our ensignia to give out to our top clients as gifts this year.

Needles to say, I've got my Christmas gifts for those who partake covered for $60 a bottle.

That's a pretty unique gift. I love it. The type of gift that customers will fondly remember many times during the year.

I'm not that into bourbon that I'm going to spend a ton of money on a high end bottle. Neither is my father.

I was pretty surprised at the bourbon selection the Duncansville store had. It was much more extensive than I remember in the past. Perhaps the PLCB is finally stepping up.

I don't have any idea why the Duncansville store has an extensive selection of Bourbon, but one thing I am Damn sure of is, it is NOT because of the PLCB stepping up. I really don't think most of those people care if they sell a bottle of bourbon, or anything else for that matter. That has been my experience when dealing with the PLCB.

Va ABC stores are advertised quite heavily - heck even delivery. Of course they have been caught up with a lot of internal issues where the 'good' stuff didn't end up in a random distribution.

The Blantons was regular retail, I was surprised at the price. And I agree with @Split shot assessment of the PLCB

I find it hard to believe also, maybe it is just pure luck they had a good selection? Thinking about it more, I should have asked about the behind the counter selection, just to see what they had. I know they do keep stuff behind there, but I never had an employee say anything about it. But I am usually grabbing what I want and going.

Not all their stores are close to equal. The Duncansville and Ebensburg stores are light years ahead of the others in my area.

I visited a local store here in Erie today. One of the selections behind the counter was a $500 bottle of Widow Jane. Had some other pricier bourbons, but nothing out of the Buffalo Trace stable.

Our travels took us to Virginia quite a few times this year, and if time permitted ;), we would stop at random Virginia ABC (state liquor) stores just to see what their bourbon inventories included.
We found several Eagle Rare(s) and Blanton's in one. There was a small sign on the shelf that said "Limit 2 per customer".
I had a cart, put 2 of each (of several releases) in it, and proceeded to the checkout counter.
The clerk looked at me and said: Nice try, but it's 2 Total of any of the limited items per customer. :p
So the Mrs. and I each bought 2.

BigFish Cider - Northern Spy and Crabbottom pippin .... real cider. Not feeling well enough for other libations!

My son was home for the holidays and both he and surprising his wife drink scotch.

He'll try different things from the LCB when home. This time was Talisker single malt 10 years old.

Have no idea if it is good.

My reward was the grandkids! Three and 9 months.

PS. I didn't know you could leave a note in the Bay Area of San Francisco and on the same damn night, Santa will redeliver all presents to Western Pennsylvania.

Have your liquor provider do that!
