OT: I’m gonna lose 25 pounds by June.

I kept hearing people talk about Keto and quite honestly it annoyed me. Then a friend of mine talked me into trying it. We downloaded the Keto app and tracked our carbs for two days. We were both around 225 - 250 per day. True Keto wants you under 25. My wife and I started “Dirty Keto” (the name definitely made it more appealing) in August. Our daily goal is to stay under 50 carbs. The first two weeks it was tough. We’ve now made a lifestyle change. I still eat bread. I still drink beer. I still eat what I want but I’m much more aware and honestly it’s working. The weight isn’t falling off but we’ve both lost about 15 lbs thus far. When we started I weighed 225. Pretty much whatever I did I would always come back to that weight. Up a few pound, down a few, back to 225.

Now that weight is 210. Since Christmas I’ve been bad. Beer, bread, desserts, etc. even with all that I’m still sitting at 210.

I have no doubt once the holidays are over and I get back on track I will start losing again. Like I said, the first two weeks were tough getting the carbs out of my system. Now I can honestly say I don’t miss them and I feel so much better and even though I’ve only lost 15lbs I’ve gone from a 38 waist to a 34.
Did you also start exercising? That would add muscle so you didn’t lose a lot of weight but lost inches. That’s why I tell people not weigh themselves but to try on a favorite pair of jeans or your favorite black cocktail dress.....just no pics please!
 
In October 2019,I weighed 258. Using the my fitness pal app and exercising (banking calories), I got down to 214 by July 2020 for my daughters wedding. However, between fire pit beer drinking, Oktoberfest, the holiday gorging in addition to the bad weather/not using the gym because of COVID, I am back up to 234. I plan to start again on Monday and restart tracking the calorie intake. It just sucks because it seems like once I hit a plateau and stop losing, I eventually start gaining again.
Common problem with dieting. Soon as you reach your goal, you relax and slip back into bad habits. Need to look at it as a permanent lifestyle change, not done just for weight loss but more for better health.

I agree with that. Although I also believe exercise kickstarts your metabolism which further helps weight loss. Diet and exercise do somewhat go hand in hand. Exercise also helps mental health (for me at least).

Actually I didn’t. My plan is to introduce exercise soon. I was thinking is start when I hit 200 to jump start things but I may in fact start sooner than that.

Lol, I am who I am, no apologies. I try to be a nice guy, be constructive. Yes, sometimes I can get maybe too personal, like maybe on this thread, but this is one of the life hacks I use to get things done. One reason I post so much about going to the gym is so I’ll get my ass into the gym. If you don’t like what I have to say, you can put me on ignore, simple solution. Or you could say nothing; I’m harmless. In the end, all your snottiness accomplished, as far as I’m concerned, is to install in me a sense of satisfaction that I already had you on ignore. Yay me.
 
Tomorrow is the day I start dropping pounds. First step, not gaining anymore pounds!!

I will never understand why people post personal things on this board, as you have done. Nothing against you, but THAT is what gives you some kind of motivation? Silly.

Exercise doesn't do anything for me from a weight loss standpoint. I walked at least 10,000 steps per day when I weighed 205 and I walked 10,000 steps per day when I weighted 165. For me it is all about the food I eat. I read somewhere that eating one slice of bread requires a person to run 1 mile to get rid of the calories. Unless you are a marathon runner I don't think exercise has much to do with weight loss.

I think you are correct when it comes to doing cardio. If you exercise to build muscle, it will reap greater rewards. Especially if you coordinate meals (protein intake after workout). Please note that this is from reading, not first hand implementatio.

Perhaps it's just a mental boost then. Either way, I feel much better when I go for walks than when I don't.
 
Many many years ago when I worked for MetLife they had an “idealized” height / weight chart.....so if you were, for example, 6’3”, you ideally should weigh about “x” pounds.

I tried to have them publish a reverse chart showing that if you weighed, for example, 240 pounds, you should ideally be about “x” feet tall.

Thought it would officially help support the “I’m not overweight, I’m just under height” theory.

Still “weighting” to hear back.....

Got any tips on getting taller?
 
Good for you, man.

Just a few observations, and all are intended to help you:

  1. This may sound stupid, but lose 5 and then 10. That way, you feel a sense of progress towards your goal of 25.
  2. BTW, your goal is definitely achievable.
  3. A gym owner once said to me "it's not in my interest to say it, but weight loss is all about diet, not exercise." That is largely true.
  4. Re: #3, health is not just about weight. Please make sure your are addressing the triad of fitness: cardio, flexibility, and strength. All are important, especially as we get older.
  5. Try to exercise first thing. Getting your heart rate up carries over to the rest of the day.
  6. I dropped 15 by just doing a salad for lunch every day. Spring mix, a little shredded cheese, raisins (the sweetness helps), an dressing.
  7. Drink a lot of water. Great for your kidneys and depresses your appetite.
  8. Portion control is key. You can likely eat everything you eat now, just do it in smaller portions.
Sorry for the rant. I hope none of this sounds preachy.
All very good advice. I especially like 1, 3, 7, 8. I have been overweight most of life sometimes by a little sometimes more than a little. I have also done and continue to do a fair amount of exercise. So IMO
1. important - part of the reason why WW and Jenny Craig do weekly weigh ins. Small attainable goals builds momentum and gives feeling of success.
3. Exercise IMO is more about health and less about weight loss. Muscle mass is heavier than fat and ex burns calories making you hungrier so the proper caloric intake is paramount.
7 Never been a water drinker but it is very importnt. That is my primary goal for this year. 60-70 oz every day.
8 Lost 35 on Jenny Craig 5 years ago and portion control was absolutely the most important thing. A couple things to consider
More frequent but smaller meals [3 small meals and 2-3 healthy snacks] helps suppress hunger but allows stomach to shrink.
A fast at the beginning of the diet or a 0 carb for just 2-3 days [ketosis which is an appetite suppressant] will help shrink the stomach so the small portions aren't as hard.

Good luck, I too am trying to lose back some of my post Jenny Craig weight gain. [I love beer and snacks especially cheese so unfortunately if i am not losing I am gaining]

I’m 214 lbs and my goal is to get 180 lbs for now. Since l’m only 5’-8” I should be around 150 lbs but that’ll never be achieved.

Good point. The only exercise I do is walking over 10,000 steps per day and I walk up flights of stairs. Maybe if I did muscle building exercises I would be better off.

Caloric deficit is really how one loses weight, unless you are on a very intense exercise regiment.

To change your body you need high intensity workouts featuring strength training. By body changes I mean muscle growth, toning etc.

Walking is good for general health and helping with a caloric deficit, but is not intense enough to get one in “good shape”. However, most people can benefit from moving move. If walking is all one is capable of due to age or physical ailments, then keep walking. Everyone who can strength train should do so in my opinion, as it has many health benefits including vascular and bone health
 
My biggest. Besides snacks.... pasta!!!! I love the stuff.

mine was the same. When I went keto for a year, I started eating miracle Noodles. ZERO carbs. They have the texture of al dente pasta to me and take the flavor of whatever they’re cooked in. When I went to low carbs, I switched to Explore Cuisine organic black bean pastas from wal mart. More protein than carbs. Might be worth a look for a regular pasta alternative. Temper your expectations though. They’re gonna be different.

Hey Teach, I did keto for a year. Hard keto. 15g carbs or less every fat. Went from 230 to 180. What made it easy for me was once I was in it and I found some good foods I could eat, I stuck with them. Ate eggs A LOT. That and I switched from beer to scotch.

In losing weight and keeping glucose numbers down, my concern is the cholesterol meds I take. Eggs don’t help me there, but I really like them.

Mixed bag of study data on eggs . Can always stick to egg white veggie omelets .
