OT: Irma track

It's cool. Weather is cyclical and stuff. It just happens that every cycle is happening all in a 15 year period. Totally coincidental. Has nothing to do with humans. Carry on.

Correct. It has nothing to do with humans. It is completely normal.

As my wife and I sit here and contemplate whether I have room for my high school yearbook, or Psu diploma.... Contemplate which of my kids childhood keepsakes we will take and which ones we will have to leave behind.... Contemplate whether we will have a home to return to on Tuesday....

Its great that you people with a political agenda can talk about global warming.

Please just shut the fvck up.

Sorry in advance for the rant.... I love all you guys.

God Bless. Make sure you have a full tank of gas and an even larger patience. I don't know where you live or if you're evacuating, but it would seem the prudent thing to do.

What's the downside?

Thanks. Brevard county, barrier island, half mile from the beach.... Were outta here
Where you headed? I'd go to Tallahassee..FSU's game will be cancelled thus there will be plenty of hotel rooms.

If, by chance, the storm veers more westward, you can always go further west to stay on the "clean side"...Destin...Pensacola

Headed to Ocala. My parents own a house there. While not completely out of harms way, should be far enough out of the path.
Dog, cat and rat makes hotels problematic. Plus if we can't come home were only unpacking once :(

LaQuinta's proudly accept dogs and cats with no extra charge. The "rat" is a rather unique pet. I would sneak it into the hotel and, if caught, would merely declare it as a "skinny, fur-challenged cat" :)

Sounds like you have a plan. The Weather Channel just showed traffic backed-up on I-75 in Ocala.

Unfortunately, thanks to my daughter, the rat's cage is bigger than my first apartmento_O
I think we'll be good in Ocala. My folks place is a single story townhouse arrangement, center unit so I think it will be OK that far inland.
I appreciate your thoughts, and hope the board can forgive my earlier rant, but I honestly don't know if I'm going to have a home Tuesday morning. I was looking through this thread for updates, and to share experiences with other Floridians, not read about global warming.
We're going to face some traffic, but hopefully Google maps will steer us in the right direction.

Leaving Brevard County (Rockledge) for Tampa with parents
Crossing fingers it pulls a Matthew path and we make it out okay

Amazing how the weather forecasting businesss can be so vague. Either they can or cannot forecast the path. I could have put a cone of where it will go just as easily. Either technology is there or it isn't. I wish they would just say that they don't know where it will go more than a day out.

Of course yes. When I used to lift in Rec with him, he used to have a pseudo-Bruce Springsteen look. Trained arms and shoulders, never had a leg day or at least looked like it. Wore a black leather jacket in all the time. Married a PSU gymnast I believe.
Yes, Jessica Strunk, who was a PSU assistant coach at one time (for quite a number of years).

Fla. residents get ready for Irma's arrival

Hurricane Irma is causing intense destruction to islands throughout the Caribbean, and the storm's current track makes it appear likely that South Florida will be heavily impacted. The state's residents have begun to prepare for the storm's arrival, and the Florida Keys are being evacuated.

The Washington Post (tiered subscription model) (9/6)

"There are two nuclear sites in Florida — 45-year-old Turkey Point 25 miles south of Miami and 41-year-old St. Lucie further north along the coast. They belong to NextEra, a utility with about 5 million electricity customers in Florida. NextEra said that it will shut down its four nuclear reactors before Hurricane Irma arrives. That will reduce the heat in the reactors and the need for electricity.

NextEra also said that its reactors could weather a loss of electricity of the sort that caused a meltdown at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi reactors after the tsunami there in 2011. A NextEra spokesman Peter Robbins said that the nuclear plants have diesel generators located 20 feet above sea level inside reinforced concrete structures."

I'm nowhere near Florida and Irma still makes me feel uneasy. I can't imagine what it's like to be in it's direct path. Thoughts and prayers to everyone in that area for the safety of you and your loved ones.

Live web cam from Ocean Club West in TCI. Won't be up much longer I suppose. This is where we stay when in Providencialis.

Actually, that beating going on in your gif on the lower right, being administered to that poor kid from Iowa, is very similar to being in the direct path of something like Irma. That particular storm is called "Zain" I believe, and just about nobody in the sport of wrestling wants any part of that, either.

That is pretty bad. I've been out of wrestling for a decade and I don't want any part of it. I figured for my signature, I'd have two of the most violent maulings by a Penn Stater in the past year.

It is more nuanced than that. The modeling works reasonably well, in the short term. Solutions converge.

The problem is that weather is, mathematically, a chaotic system. It depends upon the initial conditions strongly. So a small error in the assumed initial conditions eventually results in a completely different solution, say 14 days out.

These guys are a lot better than they used to be. But the truth is, 100 miles either direction makes the difference between a huge disaster and an event that is pretty mild. And with the uncertainty in the initial conditions (actual wind speeds and temperatures that define the initial conditions), the solution is only so accurate.

What source/link are you using for this info?

TIA.
NHC moved the track a little west based on latest Euro models. Looks to be heading up the spine of the state. Wherever GFS comes in, we know it will be left of that because of their bias. I wouldn't want to be in Naples/Bonita even though they'll be on the good side of the storm.

What % of your social circle stuck around?

My in laws in palm beach are staying. No good options at this point really.

Probably nearly everyone. Palm Beach is under mandatory evacuation (which I am not), but I wouldn't leave provided the house was shuttered.

Got it.

Yeah they're ignoring that. High rise; wife is freaking out but we will see.

Good luck.

Hunkering down in central Florida. I have water, food and plywood. We will know Saturday how much impact it will have in our area. I hope I can watch the game!
