I am considering the Harvard Extension School for Management. I really want your opinion if this will be worth doing in terms of getting a decent paying job. From what I've heard, the Harvard Extension School degree can add prestige to hire someone because he/she has ‘Harvard’ in educational background (i.e. it can get you noticed and add prestige by HR screener or hiring manager). Or do you think I'm better off attending a regular MBA program, even if it's not top 25 or even top 40? Professionally, I would be open about being a student in the Extension program (when people want more information); otherwise, I don't think it's committing resume fraud if I just say Harvard MBA.

What do you do, and what do you want to do? Will the MBA program be paid for by your company? Where do you live and do you want to stay there? We need a lot more info to provide any sort of advice.

Certificate programs from prestigious schools are well and good, and can help build your skill set and show you have initiative. However, 4 classes at Harvard in some certificate program is not at all the same as earning a Harvard MBA.

Why bother going to an MBA program that isn’t top 40? If you’re serious about learning, do it the right way. Get into the best school you can attend and put the work in. This will be more impressive to employers than a few extension school courses.

The only question you need to ask yourself is.........“Will this enhance my tips when I deliver pizzas” and which pizza chain in Michigan would be my “preferred employer”?
  • Dominos
  • Little Caesar’s
  • Jets

My personal opinion is that where you got your degree will help decide how high or low your first job is, but after a few years of work it will be more about your work experience and accomplishments. I guess this applies to most careers, but there may be some careers where having a high end school on your resume continues to add value throughout your career.
