Rumour spreadin' 'round
In that Texas town
About that shack outside La Grange
And you know what I'm talkin' about

I will concede that the accompanying guitar riff is more legendary.

I will concede that the accompanying guitar riff is more legendary.
They got a lot of nice girls

But Glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity.

Quick to judge
Quick to anger
Slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice
And fear walk hand in hand

both from the same author. Just phenomenal.

The bridge in Behind Blue Eyes:
When my fist clenches crack it open
Before I use it and lose my cool.
When I smile tell me some bad news
So I don’t laugh and act like a fool.
And if I swallow anything evil
Put your fingers down my throat.
And if I shiver please give me a blanket
Keep me warm let me wear your coat!

This can be my total purpose tonight. For starters…

“But I look at your pants, … and I need a kiss”

“The only thing I’ll ever ask of you —
you’ve got to promise not to stop when I say when”

“But look at my hopes, look at my dreams
the currency we’ve spent -
I love you, you pay my rent”

“Oh there’s a lot of opportunities if you know when to take them, you know there’s a lot of opportunities, if there aren’t you can make them”

“Imagine something of your very own
Something you can have and hold
I'd build a road in gold just to have some dreaming”

“Punk rockers in the UK
They won't notice anyway
They're all too busy fighting
For a good place under the lighting”

May the wind take your troubles away
May the wind take your troubles away
Both feet on the floor, two hands on the wheel
May the wind take your troubles away

And a song I was writing is left undone
I don't know why I spend my time
Writing songs I can't believe
With words that tear and strain to rhyme

Kathy’s Song. Simon & Garfunkel

She tried for years to be a good wife
It never quite got off the ground
And all those stories of the good life
Convinced her not to hang around

"As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti." Song - Africa. Just because I am amazed anyone could fit those words into a song lyric.

It's better to burn out than to fade away

I remember how rough your hand felt on mine
On my wedding day
And the tears cried on my shoulder
I couldn't turn away
Well so much has happened to me
That I don't understand
All I can think of is being five years old following behind you at the beach
Tracing your footprints in the sand
Trying to walk like a man

Shadows are fallin' and I'm runnin' out of breath
Keep me in your heart for a while
If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less
Keep me in your heart for a while

It's better to burn out than to fade away

I remember how rough your hand felt on mine
On my wedding day
And the tears cried on my shoulder
I couldn't turn away
Well so much has happened to me
That I don't understand
All I can think of is being five years old following behind you at the beach
Tracing your footprints in the sand
Trying to walk like a man
These lyrics forced me to pull off a Kentucky mountain road after visiting my girlfriend (now wife) a month or so after my father died, bawling my eyes out. Had heard the song for several years and never gave it a second thought. At that moment they hit like a ton of bricks, the last four lines in particular. That’s the power of Springsteen.

The cats in the cradle and the silver spoon, the little boy blue and the and the man in the moon. When you coming home dad? I don't know when, but we'll get together then. You know we'll have a good time then.

So you're underneath the stairs
And you're givin' back some glares
To the people you just met
And it's your first cigarette

FVick it, I need a cigarette
I need a bag of ice, I need some Heineken
And a boom box bumpin' out some real hood shit
And some Pakololo, grown local
What bada you? Are we too local?
Are we too loco? Are we too vocal?
When you're on the beach reading some book that you bought
Remember, you're on my lake

Ha! I always thought of that as the most maliciously twisted song lyric of all time

“My bartender, she from the islands. Her body is kissed by the sun. The coconut replaces the smell of the bar and I don’t know if it is her or the rum.”

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels
Look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through
Looking into their eyes, I see them running too

For what is a man, what has he got
If not himself then he has not
To say all the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
The record shows, I took the blows
But I did it my way

They tell you not to hang around and learn what life's about
And grow up just like them - won't let you work it out
- and you're full of doubt

Billy Joel:

Well, the graduations hang on the wall
But they never really helped us at all
No they never taught us what was real

Rolling Stones (as I contemplate/prepare for retirement):

After all is said and done
I did alright, I had my fun
I will walk before they make me run

Lonnie swept the playroom
and he swallowed up all he found
It was 48 hours til Lonnie came around

Local boys will spend a quarter
Just to shine the silver bowl
Livin hard will take it’s toll
Illegal fun, under the sun boys

And be a simple kind of man
Oh be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh won't you do this for me son if you can
