OT: Thoughts on Leah Remini's scientology series?...

Amazing that she seamlessly played one of the most bad ass women in the history of sitcoms, yet somehow she wasn't in control of her own life.

David Miscavige is one scary dude. Hard to believe how many families get torn apart within
Scientology and how long it takes people to "wake up". The higher ups rake in millions and the families suffer. Had no clue Clearwater was Scientology land. Will definitely avoid that place.

Just to make sure someone doesn't throw a flag here. Being proactive.

I think we should all walk around looking like Admiral Halsey, or is that Captain Wrongway Peachfuzz? Just amazing people get sucked into that kind of stuff. No further comment necessary.

The Church owns a ton of property in Clearwater. If you go over the bridge to the beach, it is largely tourist based and you won't see any members since they are so controlled as to their movements. So, you're separated by a bridge but it might as well be two different countries.

The Church has their own laws, banking, etc. It really is a closed society. They run around Fort Harrison and the surrounding areas like ants. Every day I wonder, "where in the hell are they all going." They all wear uniforms so you know who is part of the Church and who isn't.

When I used to get a car from the airport to the beach, I had a driver (Chuck) who drove all of them at one time or another. He said Lisa Marie was constantly hammered and basically comatose, Tom Cruise was just flat out strange, but Kirstie Alley was always great fun. Chuck told me it always amazed him how tall she was.

Didn't they try to do something like that and the "church" of Scientology had all their members file individual law suits that overwhelmed the Feds and caused them to back off?

Listening to Remini it sounds like a textbook cult that goes after anyone who criticizes it.

Not to mention the mandatory spending on books/ tapes for each member around 200k (?) per person. Then they reportedly 'update' the books (with very little if any changes per Remini) and make people buy it again. Just unreal.

I didn't know that history but there is huge money involved there for sure. But how they allow a cult that commits crime and evades taxes to get and maintain its exempt status is beyond me.

Been a great series and a fascinating addition to Going Clear.

Of all the nutiness and sadness and horror of this cult, the one item from the series that sticks out to me is: if this is a church, ask a scientologist what his/her religious beliefs are. Just the basics. A Christian can do that. A Jew and Muslim can too, easily. What are the beliefs of this church other than to stroke its 5 foot tall leader's ego and line his pockets?

Scary, fascinating, and sad.

The guts it takes to get out, is amazing. They come after you HARD when you do. Jason Lee had to move to rural Texas and leave show business. I have a lot of love and respect for Leah, she's awesome. About the only guy they didn't go after was Jason Beghe, mainly because they were too scared of him, haha.

I've even seen clips of Jenna Elfman going after somebody, and the hate that was spewing from that #%&*# would have blown your mind.

All true but it's not just guts. You could be stuck in a church prison! They come after you and physically try to take you back. It's not just mental toughness, you have to have gone to SERE school to gtfo this thing.

A local out that way told me they owned a bunch of property around Oldsmar as well and were waiting on zoning. This was a few years ago.

Add scientology to many other beliefs and organizations and one has to wonder how many sane, civil, humane persons exist in this country! Events in 2016 are illustrative.

Just learned of a 2015 HBO doc film on scientology. Similar format. Watching now.
Subsequent comment: Excellent expose'. Hubbard was f'ing nuts and a lying, failed naval officer.

A few years ago I had some tooth pain and went to see my dentist. He told me I needed a crown/root canal etc. When he gave me the projected bill, it was huge but he said he would run it by my insurance. He came back a few minutes later and gave some crazy payment plan where I could sign off on my insurance reimbursement checks (I pay upfront for certain big items) and give them to him and some other nonsense. I said no and that I would just talk to them insurance and work it out.

When I came back in to get the crown prep I noticed he was acting weird again during my visit and afterwards another client told me he had a similar experience. The day I came in for my crown to be set I noticed a new rack of books in the waiting room; all scientology stuff from Hubbard. After I got my crown I cut my ties with that guy and based on stuff I heard, I am so glad I did.

Humanism on steroids. Scientology has been around for a while. What is shameful is the fact that they were ever granted tax free status and that their repressive authoritarian BS has been allowed to continue all of these years. It is hard to believe that people buy into this stuff, but it just goes to show that unfulfilled people are always looking for something.

Can't believe that is true. If it was true, I am sure I would have heard somebody mention it on the Golden Globes last night. (kidding, of course)

People will figure out a way to tie ANYTHING to the BOT/Sandusky Scandal. It's like the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon or whatever.... Give it a rest...

That guy is a total creep. He may be worse than Hubbard IMO.

Here is the FULL Jason Beghe interview. It's LONG, but it is the MOTHER of all Scientology exposes.

Loved that episode from a few years ago. Actually... I enjoy the way they do most things on their show. Joseph Smith and The Book of Mormon was another good one.

The Mormon episode is the foundation of their play Book of Mormon. With seeing if you get a chance.
