OT: Watches for $3k-$5k

I certainly understand that Breitling doesn’t move the needle for you. I am a fan and have been amazed at the transformation of their offerings over the past 2 years. This Navitimer retails at $3900 on their website so it is available for a lot less retail.

If I spend $3900 for a watch it better be able to rub my balls.

Actually there is a Ball watch. They make a series of railroad inspired watches which originated in America in 1800s after they became the official timekeeper for the railways after a horrific train accident occurred in Ohio due to two trains approaching each other thinking the time was different than it was. They are now Swiss made but maintain the railroad look. I own one and think it might be better made than my Rolex Oyster. The lume on the indices is made from radioactive gas housed in small glass chambers on the dial and they have exceptional shock resistance. They sell from around $800 to a few grand.

I have had several Panerai watches. Love, love, love them. Timeless watches, with a bit of a bold look. Distinctive crown cover on some. I think one of the best looking watches by far, and one of the best made.

Eh, I think you get what you pay for in a sense, but I understand it isn't everyones jam. My F1 is over 15 years old and still looks good/gets compliments, my one aquaracer is 10 years old and if I sold it today would have cost me around $500 in "depreciation" (yay outlet pricing on limited edition watches). Submariners cost more used than new, meanwhile the fossil watch I got for a few hundred around the same time as the F1, discolored, stopped working and is long gone

FYI I wasn't trying to guilt you or anything, I just have a philosophy of buying many watches for cheaper than one big fancy one. I can't say no sometimes to a sweet Seiko or Deep Blue diver, etc. Then you mix in some different straps and suddenly you're rocking a new watch look almost daily. It does get to be a pain since most of them are autos.

Two of my favorites:

Be different and the only high end watch made in America. RGM watches are made here in Lancaster Co. RGM

Go with a Shinola. American made. Hip styling. Use the $2K you save for real champagne.

Just another way to go ... if you can travel to Philadelphia, I have bought 3 watches at Govberg . The hidden gem is their pre-owned department. Watches are like cars - you can buy a pre-owned watch, reconditioned and warrantied for 40-60% off of original retail. Plus some of the older "retro" watches are just plain cool.

I think the white face looks really clean. The black one looks awesome when you get it on a nato (not exactly the same model but similar enough).

These are my current watches so looking to get something a little different visually.

Tag actually came out with two beautiful reissues but I don't think I want a 4th one with so many other brands out there.

All your watches look the same. Try getting something more traditional and formal ...

Another off topic thread for the all knowing board. My fiancee is probably getting me a watch as a wedding gift and it appears that the Green Rolex Sub I lust after will not be happening (which is fine). I've got a couple of Tags (Titanium Aquaracer, Silver Aquaracer and an old red formula one) so I'm not looking for another.

Any suggestions on where to look in the 3-5 grand range? I've looked at some "cheaper" omegas that would look great with a nato strap, but outside of that I haven't really seen much.

I post this a couple times a year.....

TJ Maxx of the luxury watch world. Most models will be from years past, but incredible (50-70% off) deals. I’ve purchased Tags, B&M, Ernst Benz, and more. Great customer service too; they once sent a Tag back to Switzerland for fixing, free of charge, when watch arrived with broken movement

Save the $3-5K for a watch that you don't need. If needed buy a Timex. Use the money saved for a downpayment on a house/condo.

Sold my condo 10 months ago and made a decent profit. All of that money is ready to go for the next downpayment.

Panerai is a cool watch with lots of history. Pam 111 is a nice entry level around 4k.... I know your not interested in Tag but their new carrera skeleton is really nice with black and blue bezel....would you consider used?

I would but used is difficult in this scenario. I’m not buying it she is. I’m just giving her an idea or two and letting her pick. That’s a lot easier with new watches because I may make a suggestion today and she’ll buy it in 3 months. Used would be a bit more, this is what I want and you need to buy it right now.

How is govberg to deal with? I'm looking for that "I'm turning 60" watch....

We purchased mountain bikes for each other so we could have built in reason to spend outdoor active time together.

Perhaps you save some of your $ and use it for the honeymoon and instead get each other fitbits. You can say it will contribute to longer lives and many active times together. I haven't worn either of my 2 normal watches since I got the Ionic. And for xmas my wife got me a fancy band from Amazon (around $100) that people constantly comment on. I have another I use when golfing, running, etc.

Congrats on wedding!

I don’t get the expensive time piece thing. I assume it’s just the jewelry aspect that is the turn on? Kind of like how chicks dig shiny rocks? I’m not knocking it, I just don’t understand it. I assume it’s all about status to show other people that you can afford to put $3k-5k on your wrist, even though a $19.99 Timex does the same thing, functionally speaking.

For me, I have a $529 Series 4 Apple Watch. Relatively speaking (to these jewelry time pieces) it is an absolute bargain considering everything it is capable of doing.
Same here. I've never spent more than $100 for a watch, never saw the appeal of spending thousands. To each their own I guess. I'd rather save that money for something else like a nice vacation. Then again, I value spending on experiences over material objects. If it truly is about showing off expensive jewelry in an attempt to impress others, the joke's on them because from looking at it I probably can't tell the difference between a $100 watch and a $10,000 watch aside from a couple of brand names like Rolex and Tag that I'd recognize.

For me it's the craftsmanship and the feats of engineering and technology, particular with the mechanical watches.

Looking at the Grand Seikos...adapting photo sensitive printing used in electronics to produce parts with tolerances within 1/1000 of a millimeter!
A movement consisting of 200 parts, hand assembled and hand calibrated, producing 8-10 beats a second keeping time within a few seconds a day.

A blend of technology, craftsmanship and aesthetics like any classic auto.
Fair enough, and to each their own. Personally I'm more impressed that a $50 watch can essentially perform the exact same function (timekeeping) as an expensive item built to tolerances of 1/1000 of a millimeter does for a fraction of the price.

Seiko Astron is a great watch

Most people never notice what’s on your wrist. But you will and that’s what’s important. You dress for yourself and not for others. I collect watches (have about 25) because I enjoy them. Some are expensive and others below $100, but each one is different in a way that I notice and care about. I don’t do it for an investment (watches depreciate quickly) or to show off. I just like the way watches look and function. I have a few quartz, several automatics, several vintage, and even some old windup ones. I’ve got Swiss, American, French, Indian, Japanese, and Chinese watches. Many watch companies have a great legacy and go back to the 1800s. The history of timekeeping facinates me. I think of them as the perfect combination of art, technology, and function. Being a watch enthusiast is a great hobby and I do it because I enjoy it.

I’m in the same boat. I couldn’t tell a $5,000 watch from a $500 one. That being said, I think that says more about you and me than anything else. Lol. I don’t think people that buy these watches to impress are trying to impress the people that don’t know anything about watches (aka people of little means). They are trying to impress the people that DO recognize an expensive time piece.

Kind of like swimming pools.

Awesome collection you have there nuke. By chance do you hang out in the watch forums? Also my seamaster is in need of service, where did you get your omega serviced? TIA

Seems like you are focused on a Diver.

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean's are in your price range. I have one and it is rock solid. It just came back from its 5 year service and looks brand new.

As other's have suggested, a Tudor Black Bay is a GREAT watch. Look at the new in house movement, not the older models with the ETA movement. I have a new Black Bay with the new movement and it is a great watch.

If you'd like to get two great watches for the price of one in your price range, look at:

Oris - I have the Oris Diver 65 bronze bezel - great watch. I also have a big crown pointer. Same movement on both.
Alpina - I have both versions of the Alpina Seastrong Heritage divers. Unique and awesome.

Not divers but great watches in my collection and in your price point:

Stowa - I have the Marine Original and the Flieger Pilot, both in the manual wind movement.
Nomos Glashutte - I have a Tangente in the manual wind. fantastic dress watch.

I really like this suggestion for OP. Panerai would be my pick

They are trying to impress the people that DO recognize an expensive time piece.

Or they aren’t trying to impress anyone... some people spend money on things they enjoy which I know is a novel concept.

I really like this suggestion for OP. Panerai would be my pick

I’m really liking the luminor base logo w the fabric strap. Going to have to find a local dealer and try it on.

It’s funny (or not), but when I wear a watch it’s from my days twenty years ago with MetLife.....a Snoopy watch.

I’ve had a LOT of comments and compliments over the years and arranged for at least half a dozen watches to be gotten for female admirers.

100 Timexes. They will keep better time than a Rolex.
