OT: Watches for $3k-$5k

My neighbor would buy new watches costing anywhere between $15K-$25K each regularly and trade them in 6 months later for 50% of what he paid and buy a new one. He typically had 3 of those watches at any one time. Crazy.

100 Timexes. They will keep better time than a Rolex.
This gentleman will swear by that statment. ;)

Or they aren’t trying to impress anyone... some people spend money on things they enjoy which I know is a novel concept.

Reread what I wrote.

“I don’t think people that buy these watches to impress are trying to impress the people that don’t know anything about watches.”

I was specifically talking about the people who buy things to impress others. Not everyone who buys expensive stuff falls into the “buy things to impress” category.

I have had several Panerai watches. Love, love, love them. Timeless watches, with a bit of a bold look. Distinctive crown cover on some. I think one of the best looking watches by far, and one of the best made.
Had the Sly Stallone model for awhile.

I just got into the nice watch game last year. I went REAL big out of the gates and bought an Omega “Ed White” Speedmaster, all original parts in near excellent condition. Added a mint 1960s Omega Seamaster Deville, followed by a brand new Grand Seiko spring drive “snowflake”. I have my eye on an IWC Portugueser or Big Pilot next.

I like the Tudor Black Bay suggestion for OP based on his tastes. I’m not a big duvet guy, so if you don’t go that route, I’d look at the IWC pilot chronograph or the GS snowflake. You could also find a nice vintage Speedy at that range. They are very versatile. They look great with the regular bracelet, but really pop with a Nato strap, or an Italian leather band - especially if the limes have turned yellow.

I hear ya. Again, not knocking it. It makes sense for the reason you listed. My Apple Watch Series 1 cost me $249 and it lasted 4 years. I sold it for $125. I plan on getting 3-4 years out of this one and then I’ll sell it for $125. If I get a new one every 4 years for the next 40 years, I’ll have about $3500 into them.

LOL.... Are you really getting into the financials of buying a pricey watch? Didn't you just spend ~$70k on a pool that depreciated by ~50% as it was being built?!!

Again, I wasn’t knocking anyone and just said I didn’t understand it. Based on the OP’s response to my initial inquiry, I said “makes sense for the reasons given”. And I’m sure there are other valid reasons to own an expensive watch, status being a big one of those reasons. But I would surely stop short of comparing the investment of limited function wristwatch with an investment into a swimming pool. But of course, for each individual, one makes much more sense than the other.

I never even thought about expensive watches until my uncle passed and left me his Breitling for Bentley watch. I get so many compliments wearing it. A not surprisingly high amount of those compliments come from salespeople when I'm in a jewelry store with my wife, but compliments out and about as well. My only real negative is the spinning case I keep it in next to my bed is too loud when it turns at night.

Very little chance I would have ever considered a $10k watch previously but enjoyed reading the suggestions in this thread and piqued my interest on adding another now.

That's a real beauty. I'm not a Breitling guy because I think they are too cluttered, but if I had to buy one, this one or the Navitimer would be it. Your post also brings up a great point...if you have several automatics, you're going to want a winding box for them as it's a pain to keep updating the time.

I’m pretty sure that @BobPSU92 is “winding his wrist watch” right now while thinking about Holly Sonders (and Seka and Ginger Lynn and Nina Hartley). ;)

FYI I wasn't trying to guilt you or anything, I just have a philosophy of buying many watches for cheaper than one big fancy one. I can't say no sometimes to a sweet Seiko or Deep Blue diver, etc. Then you mix in some different straps and suddenly you're rocking a new watch look almost daily. It does get to be a pain since most of them are autos.

Two of my favorites:

Nice orange monster. Does it have the 2nd (4R36) or 3rd (6R15) generation Seiko movement? How is the accuracy. I am contemplating a Seiko Sumo automatic, which has the 6R15 movement which can be hacked and wound.

It's the early Monster with the earlier movement, no hacking/winding. I have no complaints about time accuracy at all but it rarely runs for more than a few days at a time because I change it up.

That Sumo is gorgeous! Looks a bit like the green-faced Deep Blue Pro Tac 1000 I'm rocking today. Seiko isn't a sexy name but they make awesome dive watches. The Monster is the boss.

How is govberg to deal with? I'm looking for that "I'm turning 60" watch....

I have had three good experiences with them. I have only done business with them at their Philadelphia store. I cannot comment on their on line business. One thing about an in person consult is that you can see how the watch feels/looks on your wrist and if the complications/winding mechanisms are way to reach, look at and feel right.

Some red flags here

Was a joke. Owning that car would be a nightmare.

Narrowed it down to 2 after trying on some Panerais and IWCs. Love the Panerai's but just too big for a daily. I like the IWC pilot watch but didnt fall in love. Went back to the Omegas and love both of these so I'll probably let her cast the deciding vote and surprise me day of. Now the question is omega boutique/AD or gray market?

Great choices. As noted above topper jewelers is out of cali and offer around an 18% discount, no tax and shipping included I believe. An omega boutique may no give a discount and you'll pay local taxes. I have a friend from watchuseek forum that had great experiences with topper. He just purchased an omega seamaster and it was shipped overnight.. good luck and enjoy

Topper is excellent. Russ has made two custom diamond rings for the wife. Excellent family owned jeweler. I’ve been a customer for 10+ years.

Didn't read all the post so maybe this was posted before, but have you considered a used Rolex

https://www.bobswatches.com/

I have, unfortunately the only rolexes I really like are the hulk, the batman and the new pepsi and all sell for more used than new. The rest of their models just don't do it for me. Her mothers BFF is actually a jeweler/Rolex dealer. I tried on Eric Stonestreet's batman before he picked it up when we were sizing her engagement ring and wanted to run out of the store with it. Really pretty watch. They may ask about getting one from her at cost but I'm not expecting it or holding my breath so I didn't mention it. Even if she agreed they are supposedly pretty rare so getting one in time might not be possible.

Hulk/Batman are ~9 new and 13+ used. Pepsis are over 10.

Another off topic thread for the all knowing board. My fiancee is probably getting me a watch as a wedding gift and it appears that the Green Rolex Sub I lust after will not be happening (which is fine). I've got a couple of Tags (Titanium Aquaracer, Silver Aquaracer and an old red formula one) so I'm not looking for another.

Any suggestions on where to look in the 3-5 grand range? I've looked at some "cheaper" omegas that would look great with a nato strap, but outside of that I haven't really seen much.

Curious--how have your Aquaracers performed? I had crown problems with mine and heard that was fairly common.

My titanium calibre 5 has been fine for the most part. Bezel got stuck once but warranty handled that quickly and I think something external somehow got into the mechanism.

The other is a Calibre S Regatta which had some problems about 6 or 7 years. My issues were Calibre S specific though. The crown doesn't adjust the time on this movement its basically just a button to put the watch into different modes. Doesn't even screw down. The crown was off slightly and wouldn't stay in the "standard" position which basically locked the watch into standby mode, imagine the clock flashing 12:00 on your microwave and thats basically where I was at. All the hands would zero to 12 and stay there. Took 5 months to get back and when it came back one of the hands was loose and moved freely with wrist movement. Had to send it back 3 times to get that corrected. Been trouble free since...

I don’t get the expensive time piece thing. I assume it’s just the jewelry aspect that is the turn on? Kind of like how chicks dig shiny rocks? I’m not knocking it, I just don’t understand it. I assume it’s all about status to show other people that you can afford to put $3k-5k on your wrist, even though a $19.99 Timex does the same thing, functionally speaking.

For me, I have a $529 Series 4 Apple Watch. Relatively speaking (to these jewelry time pieces) it is an absolute bargain considering everything it is capable of doing.

Same. To each their own. My wife got me a $500 Citizen watch as her wedding gift to me. I love it -- really do -- but that seems to be the max $$ that makes sense to me for a watch. When you look at the realized quality/price ratio of the Citizen, it has to be going down pretty steeply not long after the Citizen.

Though, maybe we just don't know what we're missing? I used to think similarly about Webber gas grills, and higher end ranges. "It's just a few metal pieces with holes, connected to gas lines with regulators - housed in a metal box," I said. I get some being better than others, but how can one justify thousands of dollars more for some of them?" Now I get it.

Ok, you can make the argument for ONE super expensive watch, I guess. But to own 4 or 5? Dumb. Would you buy 4 or 5 expensive grills?

Many of us don’t buy just what we need. We buy what we want. And if we enjoy luxury items over utilitarian items, then why not? If you can afford it, go for it.

I paid about $170 for a charbroil grill and got about 4 years out of it before it rusted out. I paid $600 for a Weber and have had it for 17 years (this summer). Yeah, I've spent some money replacing different parts every few years, but nowhere near enough to make me regret my initial investment. Plus a Weber just cooks a much nicer steak than a cheap grill. You can't put a price tag on that.
