Why did we elect to receive the ball to start the game...
The reason most coaches defer comes down to the chance to pair a score at the end of the first half with one at the start of the second...pretty close to what Ohio State did

Also, seemed the the crowd was still getting settled in from halftime, so the noise level was lower...advantage Ohio State

Why was Stevens in the game....hasn't seen a snap all year and we put him in the biggest game of the year. Everyone new what was coming...I don't get it.

Franklin always opts to receive the ball, because the offense is the strength of the team. That's not hard to figure out. It is a definite down side if you're behind and then have to kick to start the second half, but that is why he does it.

I don't get your problem with Stevens being in the game. If that was a decent pass from the qb that play was going to be huge. On a trick play like that the simple pass has to be good, and it wasn't. There's enough to worry about on a play like that without having trouble completing the simplest part of it.

If you elect to receive the ball you better score...we didn't.

I agree with the why was stevens even in the game. The rest of your post not so much.
Frankly it was probably that God awful half time show that drove the fans into bowels of Beaver Stadium. I thought I was having an acid flashback to the f'n Up with People crap that they used to do at the Orange Bowl. That was an abortion of a half time show.

Interesting.

As a measure of how ungodly bad it was ....... the guys who do the post-game (Ironhead and the other guy), actually talked at length as to how awful it was - - - even going so far as to say they felt it drained the energy out of the stadium for the start of the 2nd half. (To be clear, They were not trying to frame it as a “difference-maker...... but it had to be god awful to even be worth a mention)
As a Blue Band alum, I can honestly say I was thoroughly embarrassed at that abomination of a halftime show.

Yes it was that bad.
What the hell were they thinking?
SMH.

Franklin is always going to take the ball first....I’m of the mind that you defer if given the choice, but I’m not the HC of PSU, and thus have no say.

What was the issue? No fans of musicals? Or just poorly performed?
Were you at the game? If not, it was basically a poor imitation of a Super Bowl type of halftime. They brought out a stage onto the field and performers from university theater arts sang and performed on the stage while the Blue Band just stood there and played accompanying music. The speakers for the singers were so loud it drowned everything else out.

No, wasn't there - that's why I was asking. People used to clamor for more Blue Band as opposed to modern piped in music.

I am listening to the Eagles radio broadcast and the topic came up. Doug Pederson always defers because statistically, teams that defer get an extra offensive possession per game. Assuming that’s true, I’m not sure I understand why a team would ever want to receive.
