PA HS Wrestling thread

This was a chicken manure move by the ref. I hope Athens files an appeal and is successful. If not, Wyalusing should decline the victory.

Had the team score been closer, the same thing could have happened to Penn State after Bo pinned Martin and caused the loss of a team point for tossing his headgear. I can only imagine what the reaction on this board would have been like.
I can only imagine CAEL's reaction.

"Look at me" move for sure.

Besides that, it seems odd to have such a close dual in (presumably the) first round of district duals.
Typically these are useless mismatches.

I agree. This ref was looking for anything to sway this match. This is terrible. I agree with Dice this should have been left alone.
Oh please stop. If that's true, then blame the Athens coaches for not anticipating that and reining in their kids. The coaches let the entire team be at the mat instead of at the bench -- ref could've dinged them for that but appropriately didn't.

One kid lost self-control and got dinged for being inside the circle. Had he only leapt once, he wouldn't have been. Somehow all of his excited teenage teammates managed to stay off the mat, let alone inside the circle.

Had this happened 2 weights earlier, it still would've decided the dual, and nobody says peep.

Also, once the kid was inside the circle, the ref is supposed to ignore that? He was one step from contacting the losing wrestler, who was laying on the mat defenseless. If we can make excuses for that kid being inside the circle, then we must also excuse Wyalusing storming the mat to defend their teammate, which thankfully didn't happen.

Easton beat Northampton , BECA beat Nazareth in District 11 semifinals.

Rath pinned his kid in 23 seconds. Enjoy him this year in PA. Going to give up his Senior Year to train college and freestyle.

Rath and Scanlan appear to have swapped weight classes in duals. Wonder if this continues in the postseason…

I think he's moved up to help the team. BECA doesn't match up well with Easton in upper weights.
I think he'll be at 152 in year end tournament.
Only reason I am intrigued is because he mentioned possibly changing weights to avoid wrestling Gaj in an interview. I do think he goes 152 and they have that match in the finals

Rath’s big win was bumping up and beating Nick Kunstek in the morning session, 3-2.

BECA beat Easton in finals. BECA bumped everyone up from 152. Rath went 172. Easton forfeited to him.
BECA actually bumped everybody up from 127. Swept 145-172 to control the dual, plus Reef Dillard beat Nick Salamone to flip the 114 result from January.

Very well could be the state final next week, Becahi will have the CRS-Central Mountain winner in semis. Easton will have a quarter with Gettysburg and semis probably against the Connellsville-Pennridge winner?

This is another example of the terrible state duals (lack of) seeding process. CRS, CM and Becahi all being on the same side makes no sense.

Don't think it's going to matter much. CRS is down our best wrestler in Mutarelli due to the PIAA trying to punish the "cheaters" but enacting rules which end up hurting only the regular schools and wrestlers because the "cheaters" always have a better game plan than the PIAA.

I think BECA probably ended up being the best team when Deluise came back and gave their upper weights a little more punch, but if South has Mutarelli you could legitimately have a state final (in the semifinal) with some juice.

Now I think we're back to BECA and everybody else. Not that it's a done deal, but I think BECA is a legitimate 10 point favorite over the next best 5 or 6 teams that could go either way depending on matchups and the coin flip.

As an aside, it really sucked watching a clearly upset Mutarelli having to hang around the edges on an exciting Saturday for South, not being allowed to participate in the ceremony and awards with kids he had grown up wrestling. He was a huge part of the victories this year even not wrestling, the kids he was training with in the room showed huge improvement.

Sucks even more when you know the back story of the voting against his application. Adults - for the most part not the coaches - remain the worst part of this sport. Lots of children masquerading as adults that don't understand the true meaning of competition.

Pre-set bracket will do that to you. Also not necessarily normal that having 1, 6, and 11’s champs on the same side is what makes it unbalanced.

Obviously nothing new. Long history of semis being finals, going back to hits like 06 Upper Perk-Nazareth, 09 Central Dauphin-Northampton, 10 Central Dauphin-Central Mountain, 12 Central Dauphin-Canon Mac, 15 Beca-Franklin Regional, 18 Beca-ECP,

There is no reason not to seed the top 4 teams in state. At least that would prevent a quarter final showdown. I think it was last year or the year before Saucon Valley benefited immensely on being number 2 from District 11.

Not complaining at all, Warrior Run benefits nicely. Their middle weights are crazy. Wirnsberger, Ulrich, Milheims 1 and 2. Then the uppers will carry them to the finale

Mcort has peaks (super stars) and valleys (serious holes). WR is solid the whole way through.
Price of admission will be WR vs Mcort 132-152.
McCort has 3 weights where they struggling, 107 114 and 285. That's it. It will be entertaining from 132-152 but McCort will win the dual solidly if WR gets to them. I think WR does get to the semis but it won't be easy.

Diceman or Willie
Do you think anyone in AAA could beat Faith Academy? Since they won state titles back to back years, will they be forced to bounce up at AAA. Unless they don’t have any transfers.

i believe they technically have no transfers other than DeKraker and he sat out this entire season. Everyone else that moved in did it in middle school. And if they moved up to AAA they would win unless Bechai gets a good recruiting class. Bishop McCourt is the only team in PA i think can challenge faith just because of their star power and underrated depth. Also next year’s faith team might be the best PIAA team ever.

I was thinking the same thing. I don’t know if I ever witnessed a team in pa which could have beaten them AA or AAA. Just to think they will be better next year and the year after. They will be a blast watch. I got to sit by some of them last year at Hershey. They seemed like nice people and know their team is a one in a lifetime team

WR will get 2 FF and win 114 & HWT. McCort will bonus most of the other matches. With McCort bumping their guys up, and if Penserio is back (not sure why he hasn't been wrestling), they have a good shot at beating FCA.

Their team next year is probably going to be the best of their run as it is Botero's senior year and they will have both Bachmann's.
I think the lineup will be something like this
107-121: Bachmann bros+Davidheiser
127:Botero
133: DeKraker
139:Wagner
145:Wagner/Waltenbaugh
152:Hontz
160:Stein/Singer
172:Weidmoyer
189:Waters
215:Singer
285:Effendian
That is an absurd lineup that I think will likely break some ridiculous PIAA records

This team could beat entire Districts AA & AAA, if the district made an all star team. I bet the AAA teams hope the stay down. Who is Dekraker? I don’t know much about him. I heard he is good though Where is he coming from.
