PA HS Wrestling thread

PIAA has released their classification numbers for 2024-2026:
https://www.piaa.org/assets/web/documents/2024_Boys_Wrestling.pdf

Of note: Cathedral Prep (D10) would be AA, Philipsburg-Osceola (D6) would be AA, McCort, Faith, and NDGP are all still AA, Hickory (D10) would revert to AA, Bradford (D9) would be AA. Bear in mind, this is all before opt ups and the inclusion of the competitive balance formula.

Also, mostly a result of my own curiosity, the schools with the smallest male enrollment:
1) Open Door Christian School (D7)- 7
2) Meadowbrook Christian School (D4)- 32
3) The Neighborhood Academy (D7)- 45
4) Sheffield (D9)- 56
T-5) Johnsonburg (D9)- 66
T-5) Sugar Valley (D7)- 66
7) Cameron County (D9)- 72
8) Sullivan County (D4)- 73
9) Summit Academy (D7)- 77
10) Youngsville (D10)- 82

D9 well represented on that list. Ridgway (D9) can’t be too fat out of the top (bottom) 10 either.

I believe Ridgway is slightly above Youngsville in terms of enrollment. Somewhere around 90-92 I think

Coudy sits at an even 100 according to the PIAA PDF. They’re listed as having a 20 student co-op. Port is listed at 109 by themselves, but they have a co-op with Smethport

I believe Austin graduates somewhere in the teens each year. They got a co-op with Coudy for football. Not sure about other sports.
I went to Coudy and at that time there wasn't a co-op. They are 10 or so miles away. Long drive for practice. They use to field a decent baseball team. Love the Cricket.

Co-op with the Hubbers not in play this year. Odd fact statistically Smethport is the coldest spot in Pa.

Smethport is part of the Bradford, PA Micropolitan Statistical Area. Smethport, having the coldest temperature ever recorded in Pennsylvania, is the coldest place in Pennsylvania and one of the coldest towns in the contiguous United States.

Bold prediction: I think Warrior Run is ready to bust through and place as a team at State duals. Regardless of the private schools. With the addition of a few key wrestlers they have a solid squad from top to bottom.
On the other hand what happened to Muncy wrestling? They were thriving with coach Harer at the helm. Now their varsity lineup gives up 10 forfeits.

While we’re talking about bold predictions - what do we make of Bethlehem Catholic finishing 23rd at Ironman? First time outside the top 10 in a long time, and only Dillard and Rath won matches on the championship side of the bracket. Obviously their two transfers out to Sem made finals and they also had another state qualifier leave. Their junior high program has only produced two D11 JH finalists in the last two years, the Dillard brothers, and their other finalist transferred out with his brother to Wyoming Seminary. They’ve also had no JH finalists from other programs come in over the last two years, so their ability to withstand all the transfers out is nowhere near what it’s been.

They’ll score a bunch of tournament points with Rath and Dillard, and I think the other Dillard, Frinzi, McFillin, and Scanlan are state level guys. But I think what happens with the Hawks is the story to watch in 3A this year. Beast will tell us a lot this weekend.

I think this makes AAA wide open. Losing those kids hurt their program for sure. I think it’s NDGP’s year to finally beat them in a dual. The Veras’ will be going banana’s that night.

I think a few teams in AA could win AAA this year. Faith academy is going to continue to set scoring records. They finished high at Ironman without two of their best wrestlers.

State duals might be wide open, with Nazareth losing to Easton.

Beca is probably still the favorite for individual states, given their margin of victory in 2023 and how much Nazareth and Waynesburg lost.

Beca (2), Nazareth (1), and State College (1) are the only teams scoring 70 pts last year and with returning champs.

Last year Beca = 139.0 pts:
lost Desmond (S1), McIntyre (S5), Dailey (S6), Harmon (S3), Thomas (S5)
Also lost state finalists Kasak and Campbell, neither of whom went to Hershey in 2023. Campbell transferred to Palidades.

Nazareth = 102.5 pts:
lost Bunting (S3), Doone (S7), Wheatley (S3), Sasso (S1)

Waynesburg = 84.0 pts: all 5 state qualifiers graduated

State High = 75.0 pts: lost H. Cunningham (S5)

I watched the stream. Technically not great. The video made some odd decisions, like focusing on the girl at the scoring table rather than the bout. Hey, I liked her too, but I was watching the wrestling. The audio came and went as well. But the bouts that they showed were interesting.
