PA HS Wrestling thread

4 from D6, 3 from D4

In order of confidence:
Bassett, Forrest, Miller, Gibson
Harer, Garcia, 145lb (Milheim/Barvitskie)
When Forrest got beat last week did Vargo hit numerous scoring moves or did he hit one big move and Forrest had to try to catch up and got sloppy??

Gill - Botero was great. Gill is really friggin impressive.

Gil up 1-0 in 2nd, Botero hits a Jonesy for 4. Gil escapes and gets a TD to tie it with short time in the 2nd. Botero starts down in the 3rd, Gil gives him the free escape, takes him down almost immediately, and then rides the snot out of him for a minute and a half to win 6-5.

Damn, he's good.

Gill vs Seidel is gonna be a great final. And barring weight changes, they'll face each other throughout college since they're going to NC State and VT.

Vargo might be a little underrated.

Forrest overrated? Don't tell that to the guys he beat at Mat Town including Lehigh's #3 Stanich.
Good point. Might also reflect on the state of 125 in the college ranks not being that dominant.
Flip a coin

Dalton Perry advances to Semi-Finals at 139 over Reihner of Trinity 9-3

Brock Weiss pinned by Kelly of CB West
**defensive pin as noted above

Weiss up 11-4 and trying to get back points in a crab ride in the 2nd….pinned in a defensive fall. That hurts.
5 returning state finalists lost in the quarters: Botero, Hornack, Hohman, Weiss, and Ziegler. A 6th, Williams, lost yesterday. Weiss and Williams both got pinned from top in defensive falls.

WIlliams, Botero, and Hornack are all returning champs. Botero at least lost to another returning champ (Gill).

Also, not a returning finalist, but Colby Martinelli got head-planted into the mat and knocked out. Refs didn't realize he was out until after slapping the mat. He got stretchered off the mat. His tourney is over, but that's secondary. Hopefully he's OK.

Respect for Graysen Music. Illegal headlock. Just shook his head and said lets go. Losing at the time against the #7 in the nation and comes back and wins. Awesome!

Gibson lost to Harer 5-0. Gave up takedowns in the 1st and 2nd, then took neutral in the 3rd and couldn't score.

Forrest and Bassett both with TF wins.

Great tournament. He'll get schooled tomorrow but 2nd place as a freshman in that insane bracket is amazing. Bummer that Bainey didn't medal but I think that ankle just needs another year.

Nelson is worth watching. He wrestles like a crazed spider. He's all hands and feet and legs moving everywhere. It confuses people from their feet.
In the semi-final, Sloboda was kinda in control of the bout, leading 2-0 thru late into the 3rd period and riding Nelson somewhat easily. But he got a 2nd stall call and gave up a point with 25 seconds to go. From bottom, Nelson is always rolling around, always moving. As time ran down, Nelson went through one of his sitout/roll around moves. Sloboda caught him long enough for a 2 count, so the score is 4-1, time running out. Nelson finally breaks free of Sloboda's hold and suddenly he's on top with the ref counting. 2 for the reversal and 3 back points at the buzzer made it 6-4.

Curt Nelson is the most entertaining wrestler I've seen at states, so far. His style is unconventional, totally different, sometimes archaic. He threw the first successful arm drag I've seen since the 50's.
And Nelson uses the Merkle as an offensive move. He does that little spin move off takedowns that you used to see little league wrestlers do but never saw in HS. Nelson does it regularly. And he transitions directly into a Merkle.
He's very fun to watch.

Has Ridley ever had a state champ?
Nelson is Ridley's first state finalist. They've had wrestling since 1959 and finally have a finalist. (Carl Schnellenback student taught in my HS in '58, the next year hired by Ridley and started their wrestling program.)

My logical reaction is the same as above: Sidun could/should hammer Nelson. OTOH, Nelson wrestles so weirdly. And strange things seem to happen when he's on the mat. He might make a match of it. Hope so. I love the kid.

Looking at the 121 AAA bracket and I don't see a single kid who could make the podium if they went down to AA. Wonder if they end up going back to one class for all and send 8 per region, with 1 through 32 seeded NCAA style

I played football with Music's dad in college and I coached Seidel in baseball. Music is the story of the tournament.

He lost to Gill 11-0 in early February.
He lost 11-0 and was pinned by Botero (who lost to Gill)

Talk about showing up on the big stage!

He lost 24-11 and was teched by Seidel this year. If he somehow wins that, it would be the most incredible, unpredictable tournament run in history!
