PA HS Wrestling thread

Number 1 in the state and country at 114 Landon Sidun loses 5-4 to Santino Sloboda from Butler
Sloboda was S4 last year, 37-1 going into states (with the 1 being SW regional finals) but then got handled by both Dillard and Martinelli. Pretty big upset.

Martinelli should win SE (he's into the finals, with upsets in the other half). If so, he'll be the 1 seed, with Sloboda the 2, Williams 3, NE and NW champs will be 4-5 in whatever order. Sidun will be unseeded and in Martinelli's half.

Gibson and Bassett both won SW Regionals.

Gibson 13-5 MD over S8 Kazalas.

Bassett F 2:24 over returning S1 Hornack. Expect a rematch in the state finals -- these 2 are by far the best wrestlers at AA 139 in PA.

Here it is. Milheim in gray, Barvitskie in black. Looks like Milheim never hooked Barvitskie's left leg with his own left leg.

Milheim hooked his right leg and immediately got a figure 4 on Barvitskie's right leg. That's when the ref called R2.

That final position is a cross-body ride and very similar to the start of a guillotine.

Barvitskie won the rematch 3-1 in the NE Regional finals.

PIAA brackets are out: https://live.pa-wrestling.com

I've described the paths for our guys in the other thread: https://pennstate.forums.rivals.com/threads/recruits-postseason-is-underway.347898/post-6648490

Quick preview of the other AA weights:

107:
Likely finals is SE-1 Joey Bachmann (FR, 34-0) vs. S2 Dominic Deputy (SO, SW-1, 46-0). Should be a very good finals, with Bachmann favored.

Also of note: NW-2 Sierra Chiesa (JR, 35-11) is looking to be the first girl to medal at boys states. Last year she lost in R12, so she could make it this year.

114:
De facto finals in the top semi, S1 Ayden Smith (SR, SE-1, 45-2, Rutger commit) vs. FR NE-1 Brock Rothermel (38-3).

Bottom half is pretty open. Most likely finalist is S3 Will Detar (SO, SE-2, 33-3). NW-1 Dalton Wenner (SO, 37-4) also has a chance; they would meet in the semis.

121: 3 returning champs!

They are:
- 1 seed Aaron Seidel (JR, 2x S1, SE-1, 48-1, VT)
- 4 seed Louie Gill (SR, S1/S2, NW-1, 47-5, NC State)
- Gauge Botero (JR, S1/S3, SE-2, 26-2, Michigan)

Seidel vs. Gill in the semis, with Botero in the bottom half.

127, 133, 139: see the other thread linked above.

145: This is a pretty wide-open weight. The contenders:

Top half: most likely finalists are SE-1 Ryan Lawler (JR, S4, 40-6) and NE-2 Reagan Milheim (SO, S2, 45-3). They would meet in the semis, and I'd expect Milheim to emerge.

Bottom half: NW-1 Cole Householder (JR, S7, 43-3) vs. SE-2 Chase Hontz (JR, S3, 36-8) in the quarters, winner gets NE-1 Mason Barvitskie (SR, S5, 32-9). Hontz is probably a very slight favorite, but really any of the 3 could reach the finals.

152:

Top half contains the top 3 wrestlers in the state (thanks to prestige points + one of them losing at regionals). State #1 Melvin Miller (SW-1, 53-3) got the 4 seed because he's a FR. In the quarters he'll get state #2 Brady Collins (JR, NW-2, 41-3). Waiting in the semis is state #3 Cameron Milheim (JR, S2, NE-1, 45-2). Miller is the favorite and beat Collins 3-1 this year. Collins beat Milheim 5-3 this year.

Bottom half is also up for grabs. Four guys could reach the finals: SE-1 Max Stein (JR, S6, 37-7); NE-2 Gage Wentzel (SO, S5, 41-8); NW-1 Cody Hamilton (JR, S8, 43-2); and SW-2 Trent Hoover (SR, 40-5). The Stein-Wentzel quarters winner is probably the more likely; of the two, Wentzel has performed better against common opponents.

Note, Hamilton is coached by PSU alum Wes Phipps.

160:

2x state champ Conner Harer (SR, NE-1, 51-0, Rutger) is the 1 seed and should reach the finals. One possible speed bump is 4 seed Devon Magro (JR, SW-1, 51-5), though Harer is favored.

2 seed Cael Weidermoyer (SO, SE-1, S3, 20-2) is a big favorite to reach the finals from the bottom half.

171:

Defending state champ Adam Waters (SO, SE-1, 39-4) will make the finals out of the top half.

The bottom half will come down to 2 seed Hunter Hohman (SR, NW-1, S2, 41-4) vs. 3 seed Caden Finck (SR, NE-1, S5, 44-5). Both are wrestling very well. Hohman is also coached by Phipps.

189:

Undefeated state #1 Garrett Garcia (SR, NE-1, 30-0) got the 4 seed because he was injured last year, SMH. Garcia was S5 in 2022. In the semis he'll get state #2 Caleb Close (JR, SW-1, S7, 41-2). Garcia should win, but it could be tight.

The bottom half is wide open -- only 2 placers return. SE-1 Lucas Lawler (JR, 37-5) was S8 last year and got the 2 seed. NW-1 Carter Chamberlain (SR, 31-8) was S8 in 2022, DNQ last year, and got the 3 seed. SW-2 Andrew McMonagle (SR, 43-3) is also in the mix, but got a tough opening match. Any or none of these guys could reach the finals.

215: 2 returning champs!

The finals will be 3x champ Rune Lawrence (SR, SW-1, 29-1) vs. defending champ Austin Johnson (JR, NE-1, 28-1). Both could pin/tech their way into the finals.

Lawrence's only loss this year was an injury default. Johnson's loss was 4-3 to national #1 Jude Correa.

285:

This is another weight that is tough to call.

Top half will likely be state #1 Mark Effendian (SO, SE-2, 37-9) vs. returning S2 Brenan Morgan (SR, SW-1, 39-0, Virginia). They will meet in the quarters, and the winner will probably take the title. I'd favor Morgan -- he nearly beat Austin Johnson in last year's finals and is wrestling extremely well, teching Dylan Pitzer in the regional finals. Meanwhile, Effendian wrestled low-scoring OT matches in every round at regionals, losing in the finals.

Bottom half will likely be Pitzer (SO, SW-2, 40-2); SE-1 Brody Kline (SR, SE-1, S5, 25-5); or NW-1 Carson Neely (JR, S4, 41-0). Pitzer and Kline will meet in the quarters; Pitzer's only 2 losses this year are to Morgan, but Kline beat Pitzer 7-1 at states last year.

Neely came out of nowhere last year. He went 4-9 as a FR, then was an undefeated regional champ as a SO and again this year. He's a pinner and a threat to win states.

Preview of AAA weights below:

107 seeds:
1 - Nicholas Salamone, SO, NE-1, S7, 32-6
2 - Nicholas McGarrity, FR, SW-1, 40-1
3 - Dominick Morrison, FR, SE-1, 43-3
4 - Aiden Herndon, FR, SC-1, 37-5
5 - Gavin Heverly, FR, NW-1, 35-10

Others of note:
- Max Tancini, SO, SE-2, S6 (top half)

It's 107. There's no point in listing all the possible contenders because it's a FR/SO weight with virtually no returning placers, so almost everybody is a contender.

Finals are likely Salamone vs. McGarrity. Herndon has a shot as well; Morrison less so. McGarrity is wrestling very well. Salamone is also tough, if the cut isn't too hard on him.

114 seeds:
1 - Colby Martinelli, JR, SE-1, S3, 21-1
2 - Kaedyn Williams, SR, SC-1, S4, 34-0 (S1 in 2022)
3 - Santino Sloboda, SO, SW-1, S4, 36-0
4 - Gabriel Ballard, FR, NE-1, 38-1
5 - Elijah Scriven, FR, NW-1, 39-6

Others of note:
- Landon Sidun, FR, SW-2, 38-2 -- state #1 before regionals loss (top half)
- Braiden Weaver, SO, NW-2, S5, 33-5 (bottom half)
- Curtis Nelson, JR, SE-3, S8, 37-2 (bottom half)

Sidun is the best wrestler in the weight. Martinelli could challenge him in the quarters, and maybe Ballard in the semis. Williams and Sloboda will face in the semis; Williams was a slight favorite before Sloboda beat Sidun at regionals.

(EDIT: Sloboda and Williams were 2 and 3 seeds in the unofficial brackets; PIAA flipped them in the official brackets. It's actually a slightly tougher path for Williams than before despite the higher seed, though ultimately they're still in the same half.)

121 seeds:
1 - Mason Ziegler, SR, SE-1, S2, 45-3 -- Lehigh
2 - Keanu Dillard, SO, NE-1, S1, 37-5
3 - Luke Willochell, JR, SW-1, S5, 38-1 -- Wyoming (S2 in 2022)

Others of note:
- Tyler Kapusta, SR, SW-2, S4/S7, 42-6 -- Bucknell (top half)
- Luke Reitter, SR, SE-2, S8 (2022), 37-10 (bottom half)

The top 3 seeds are all capable of winning. Ziegler was runner-up to Cael Nasdeo last year. Dillard was the undefeated 107 champ last year, and beat Ziegler 3-2 this year.

127 seeds:
1 - Andrew Binni, SR, SW-1, S2, 32-6 -- Navy
2 - Dean Houser, SR, SC-1, S5, 44-2 -- Lock Haven
3 - Eren Sement, JR, SE-1, S3, 39-7
4 - Trey Wagner, SO, NE-1, 30-3
5 - Keagan Oler, JR, NW-1, 29-4

Others of note: none, but state #1 Anthony Mutarelli (SE) was ruled ineligible for the postseason after transferring home from Malvern Prep. He'll get the 4 or 5 seed next year for certain.

Sement and Binni are the favorites. Wagner was ranked #1 in the state at 133 before dropping for the postseason.

133 seeds:
1 - Tahir Parkins, JR, NE-1, S4, 37-2 -- Rutger
2 - Tyler Adams, SR, SC-1, 33-2 -- Navy
3 - Branden Rozanski, SR, SE-1, 36-4
4 - Mason Kernan, SR, SW-1,
5 - James Whitbred, FR, NW-1, 23-9

Others of note:
- Gavin Sheridan, SR, SE-2, S7, 45-4 -- Navy (top half)
- James Garcia, SR, SC-2, S8, 49-4 -- F&M (top half)
- Chris Dennis, SO, SE-3, S6, 35-4 (top half)

Parkins is the best wrestler in the weight and should win states. Fanelli and Adams should meet in the semis; Fanelli is tested against a tougher schedule.

139 seeds:
1 - Maddox Shaw, JR, SW-1, S2, 39-3
2 - Seamus Mack, SR, SC-1, S6, 34-2
3 - Jack Campbell, SO, NE-1, 33-6
4 - Brock Weiss, SR, NW-1, S2 (2022), 30-0 -- PSU
5 - Patrick Kelly, JR, SE-1, 35-4

Others of note:
- Mike Turi, SO, NE-2, S7, 37-2 (top half)
- Rocco Fratelli, SR, SC-3, 10-3 -- Lock Haven (top half)
- Dominic Ferraro, JR, SW-2, 37-5 (bottom half)
- Dalton Perry, JR, NW-2, S3 (S1 in 2022), 31-3 -- PSU (bottom half)
- Blake Reihner, SR, SW-3, S5, 45-4 -- Davidson (bottom half)

Shaw vs. Weiss in the semis, winner gets Perry.

145 seeds -- 2 returning champs!
1 - Luke Simcox, SR, NW-1, S1, 27-3 -- North Carolina
2 - Elias Long, SR, SC-1, S8, 41-4
3 - Gavin Carroll, JR, SE-1, 41-6

Others of note:
- Pierson Manville, SR, NW-2, S2 (S1 in 2022), 23-1 -- Arizona State (bottom half)

Simcox vs. McFillin in the semis. Winner (likely Simcox) gets Manville in the finals.

152 seeds -- 2 returning champs!
1 - Kollin Rath, JR, NE-1, S1, 41-1 -- Missouri
2 - Collin Gaj, JR, SE-1, S1, 41-3 -- VT

4 - Luke Sipes, JR, NW-1, S7, 33-5 -- Princeton
5 - Kyle Deisley, SR, SC-1, 32-4 -- F&M

Rath vs. Gaj in the finals. Sipes is the only possible obstacle. Rath is 3-0 lifetime vs. Gaj, including a 2-1 TB win this year -- though 2 of those wins went to OT.

160 seeds:
1 - Ryan Garvick, SR, SC-1, 2x S2, 46-4 -- Indiana
2 - Asher Cunningham, JR, NW-1, S4, 33-1 -- PSU
3 - Bode Marlow, JR, SW-1, 35-6

5 - Blaise Eidle, JR, SC-1, 51-9 (!)

Others of note:

- Sam Gautreau, SR, SE-2, S4, 40-5 -- Maryland (bottom half)

Sadriddinov, SPencer, and Gautreau are all capable of winning. Spencer last year was an undefeated regional champ at 189 but got injured at states; this year he's down to 172.

Also, Eidle has 60 matches before states? Hopefully limbs don't start falling off in Hershey.

189 seeds:
1 - Tucker Hogan, SR, SC-1, S1, 45-0 -- Lock Haven

5 - Rocco Serafini, SR, NW-1, 38-6

Others of note: (none)

215 is a one-man race to the top. Bechtold is 38-0 with 38 bonus wins, 34 by fall including Marzolino. His closest match of the year was 16-2 over Hight.

285 seeds:
1 - Sean Kinney, SR, NE-1, 2x S1, 35-1 -- Lafayette football
2 - Nick Pavlechko, SR, S2, NW-1, 32-1 -- Indiana
3 - Dean Bechtold, SO, SE-1, S6, 38-3

- John Pardo, SR, SE-3, S3, 36-3 -- Penn (top half)
- Ean Winchester, SR, SC-2, 40-2 -- George Mason (bottom half)

Kinney is a big favorite to win his 3rd. Most likely this is a rematch of last year's state final, which Kinney won 7-0. Pavlechko beat Bechtold twice this year, by fall and then 2-0. Everybody else is battling for 4th or 5th.

Anyone know if Heverly is part of M2. Hard to think he isn't since Central mountain is only 20 minutes away. He is a pleasant surprise for Central mountain. Kid has heart. Dad wrestled for Bald Eagle Nittany back in the day if it's the Heverly I'm thinking of

3 - Luke Willochell, JR, SW-1, S5, 38-1 -- Wyoming (S2 in 2022)
4 - Myles Grossman, FR, SC-1, 39-7 (coached by Levi's uncle Chris Haines)
5 - Aiden Kunes, FR, NW-1, 35-13

- Ben Fanelli, SR, NE-2, S8, 38-5 (bottom half)

Parkins is the best wrestler in the weight and should win states. Fanelli and Adams should meet in the semis; Fanelli is tested against a tougher schedule.

139 seeds:
1 - Maddox Shaw, JR, SW-1, S2, 39-3
2 - Seamus Mack, SR, SC-1, S6, 34-2
3 - Jack Campbell, SO, NE-1, 33-6
4 - Brock Weiss, SR, NW-1, S2 (2022), 30-0 -- PSU
5 - Patrick Kelly, JR, SE-1, 35-4

Others of note:
- Mike Turi, SO, NE-2, S7, 37-2 (top half)
- Rocco Fratelli, SR, SC-3, 10-3 -- Lock Haven (top half)
- Dominic Ferraro, JR, SW-2, 37-5 (bottom half)
- Dalton Perry, JR, NW-2, S3 (S1 in 2022), 31-3 -- PSU (bottom half)
- Blake Reihner, SR, SW-3, S5, 45-4 -- Davidson (bottom half)

Shaw vs. Weiss in the semis, winner gets Perry.

145 seeds -- 2 returning champs!
1 - Luke Simcox, SR, NW-1, S1, 27-3 -- North Carolina
2 - Elias Long, SR, SC-1, S8, 41-4
3 - Gavin Carroll, JR, SE-1, 41-6
4 - Shane McFillin, JR, NE-1, 36-7
5 - Evan Petrovich, JR, SW-1, 37-6

Others of note:
- Pierson Manville, SR, NW-2, S2 (S1 in 2022), 23-1 -- Arizona State (bottom half)

Simcox vs. McFillin in the semis. Winner (likely Simcox) gets Manville in the finals.

152 seeds -- 2 returning champs!
1 - Kollin Rath, JR, NE-1, S1, 41-1 -- Missouri
2 - Collin Gaj, JR, SE-1, S1, 41-3 -- VT
3 - Eli Carr, SR, SW-1, S4, 32-2 -- Brown
4 - Luke Sipes, JR, NW-1, S7, 33-5 -- Princeton
5 - Kyle Deisley, SR, SC-1, 32-4 -- F&M

Rath vs. Gaj in the finals. Sipes is the only possible obstacle. Rath is 3-0 lifetime vs. Gaj, including a 2-1 TB win this year -- though 2 of those wins went to OT.

160 seeds:
1 - Ryan Garvick, SR, SC-1, 2x S2, 46-4 -- Indiana
2 - Asher Cunningham, JR, NW-1, S4, 33-1 -- PSU
3 - Bode Marlow, JR, SW-1, 35-6
4 - Nick Kunstek, SR, NE-1, 39-2 -- anOSU
5 - Gavin Cole, JR, SE-1, 42-7

Others of note:
- Gunnar Myers, SR, NE-2, S6, 43-1 -- Northwestern

Kunstek vs. Garvick in the semis. Winner (likely Kunstek) gets Cunningham in the finals. Asher beat Kunstek 7-3 earlier this year.

172 seeds:
1 - Bekhruz Sadriddinov, SR, SE-1, S5, 42-3 -- Lehigh
2 - Vaughn Spencer, JR, SW-1, 39-2 -- Lehigh
3 - Connor Wetzel, JR, NW-1, 34-2
4 - Brian Heard, JR, NE-1, 43-3
5 - Blaise Eidle, JR, SC-1, 51-9 (!)

Others of note:
- Shawn Taylor (S2, SW, 16-0, West Virginia) would've been the 1 seed at this weight, but missed the postseason with injury.

2 - Jared Karabinus, SR, NE-1, 33-2
3 - Tucker Teats, SR, NW-1, 37-7
4 - Michael Spielman, SO, SE-1, 38-1
5 - Cooper Roscosky, SO, SW-1, 38-2

Others of note:
- Cole Bartram, SR, SC-2, S2, 33-1 -- Lock Haven (bottom half)

Hogan vs. Bartram in a rematch of last year's state finals, won by Hogan 4-0. Bartram's only loss this year was to Hogan in the SC Regional finals, 9-2.

215 seeds:
1 - Dillon Bechtold, SR, SE-1, S2, 38-0 -- Bucknell
2 - Caleb Marzolino, SR, NE-1, 34-2
3 - Jake Conroy, JR, SW-1, 42-2
4 - Aiden Hight, SR, SC-1, 32-3 -- North Dakota State
5 - Rocco Serafini, SR, NW-1, 38-6

Others of note: (none)

215 is a one-man race to the top. Bechtold is 38-0 with 38 bonus wins, 34 by fall including Marzolino. His closest match of the year was 16-2 over Hight.

285 seeds:
1 - Sean Kinney, SR, NE-1, 2x S1, 35-1 -- Lafayette football
2 - Nick Pavlechko, SR, S2, NW-1, 32-1 -- Indiana
3 - Dean Bechtold, SO, SE-1, S6, 38-3
4 - Michael Hershey, SR, SC-1, 33-1
5 - Shepard Turk, JR, SW-1, 33-7

Others of note:
- Calvin Lachman, SR, SE-2, 44-4 -- Lehigh (top half)
- John Pardo, SR, SE-3, S3, 36-3 -- Penn (top half)
- Ean Winchester, SR, SC-2, 40-2 -- George Mason (bottom half)

Kinney is a big favorite to win his 3rd. Most likely this is a rematch of last year's state final, which Kinney won 7-0. Pavlechko beat Bechtold twice this year, by fall and then 2-0. Everybody else is battling for 4th or 5th.
Great stuff!!!!

I just looked up the scoring on Forest and Vargo. I thought it was just a headlock. Vargo seemed to control all three periods. How don’t we know much about him. I heard he was a three time state placer? Did he win any titles.

Just got thru AA brackets. They are loaded more than ever. Faith has a chance to break their record. They got guys in just about every weight.

121 is 🔥. I am excited to see little Harer battle in a tough bracket. Three studs in there.

Quick predictions
Team
1. Faith (breaks their old mark)
2. Bishop McDevitt
3. Bishop Mcort

Reynolds wins public school title

Vargo was a state finalist last year. He's not an unknown across PA.

Nationally he seems to be unknown. I just looked him up from the last few years. Vargo won regionals titles and lost in the finals to Hornack. He is definitely really good. Will be on the national rankings now.

No, states and B10s are usually the same weekend.

Take some solace: at least you're not Casey Cunningham, having to miss his son likely win states.
Gotta give NJ credit. They moved all levels of the postseason and they finished up States this past weekend.

So if we see Casey jump up and cheer at an odd time, he likely was streaming the match?
Last year States were not the same weekend as Big Tens. Cael and Casey were both in attendance in a private box. States is always around March 10th while Big Tens is more versatile based on NCAA schedule.

NCAA's are generally the 3rd Thursday. This year, the third Thursday is the 21st, meaning this year's tournament is later in March than normal. The Big 10's are 2 weeks prior to the NCAA's.

The PIAA schedule is a bit more complicated, but it's generally around the date that you stated.

Coming down tomorrow with my daughter. What's everyone's recommendation on general admission tickets, lower level or upper level?

Jax Forrest is so damn smooth with his technique. I know he got caught and lost last week, but it happens sometimes.
Bassett reminds me of Bouzakis his senior year, but he is only a sophomore. He just straight bullies kids.
Landon Bainey lost in the first round. I believe he was a last year runner up.
Can't wait to see a Dom Deputy and Joey Bachman final
AA 114 is gonna be a great semi if all goes to chaulk.

Bainey was always going to have trouble repeating as a finalist with 3 former champions in his bracket, but losing in the first round was a surprise. He rebounded nicely with a fall in the consolations though.

Music is a hell of a freshman wrestler, PJW state champ and has done well at national tournaments. In a few years it won’t seem like an upset. For those that do not follow youth wrestling, another to keep you eye on is Guenot at 107. In AAA watch out for Albenese, Muyleart, Kunes, Vielma, and Slicker as freshmen names off the radar.

2 seed at 107 McGarrity gets dominated by NE-4 Emilio Albanese, not really an upset based on results and rankings but based on seeding and record it is
I think Albanese medaled at Fargo this summer and was a junior high state runner-up. He’s really good, and I think could definitely make a finals run from the bottom half of the bracket.

Also back to the point I’ve been making a lot this year in D11, super talented freshman…who stayed at Emmaus.

Massive upset at AAA 114 in Round 1: undefeated returning state champ Kaedyn Williams decked in 3:14 by SE-3 Curtis Nelson, on a defensive pin.

It seemed like a strange match for a defending state champ. Williams showed no offense.

Thanks! The bracket shows Albanese on both the front and back sides. Definitely a double registration fee for that type of action

I know Music's parents. His dad was a college football teammate of mine. He was one hell of a player, and I'm not surprised their son is a talented athlete.

Is that true that Bainey’s dad told on Music about parking or something. Saw it on the Wrestling room. I didn’t quite understand it.

AA
Rothermel, Harers, Milheims, Wentzel, Garcia and Finck all looked amazing.
D4 is looking like the most impressive district thus far
