PA HS Wrestling thread

Teag is 8th grade and they lost seeds but they only separate area champs and maybe returning champs, no other seeding then that.

The kid Teag beat in the finals Cael Smith is no slouch. He won keystone states a couple of years back. Not sure what happened, but Cael stayed down for a while after the match. My back was turned because one of my wrestlers was walking to the podium

107- Lotier and Chunko on another level from rest of the field. Not a deep weight. 3-4 place kids had a great scrap and they are solid tough kids.

114- The most loaded weight by far. I could talk about this bracket on so many levels. There were so many top kids at this weight. Schickley got upset by Smith who then lost to Shuman. Shickely i had pegged 4-5. He did not even make too 8!! Shuman got the best gift thanks to Smith, and Shuman then earned his 5th place finish. Manyette had a nice tournament. I think Wolford beats Bachman if he rides him a few more seconds. Freddie had a nice escape in OT. Bachman rode Sammy pretty easy to win. Great match but Freddie looked so gassed and was taking a long time to get back to the center.

121- Detar and Botero top 2 and on their own island. Then you have like 4 good
kids. Then a few decent kids. The way bracket was laid out one of those kids were getting eliminated. Spofferd was that guy. He then lost to Bitting in under 30 seconds for 7-8th place. Bitting also pinned Deputy in by far the upset of the year at team states. Bitting got teched a couple times last few weeks by a few kids. Anyway the finish of Detar and Botero was awesome. I think Botero went for a jonesy and Detar locked up a cradle and put him on his back to win it in OT.

127- Extremely weak weight class. Bachman and Music was the match up we knew since sectionals. No offense to anyone but the other kids who qualified for states are lucky. I don’t wanna call a kid out but damn this kid I have zero clue what happened, but how he did not get 3rd place at this weight is a huge head scratcher!!! He did not even qualify for states.

133- Seidel hammered Green. No surprise there. Why can no one stop his only go to takedown? He is the best kid on top for years IMO. Also Aaron is nothing but class. Never in my life have I ever heard one bad thing about this kid. Rooting for him against Forrest.

Baum in a class by himself. He destroyed everyone. 2-5 are all interchangeable. All solid kids.

One man class with Wagner at 145. Extremely weak and boring weight class. Wagner dominated everyone.

152- Ok. All 3 of these placement matches were bonkers!! 5-6 came down to the wire and it was exciting and heart breaking. Senior from Tulpehocken almost got to qualify for states and lost and to see him just see him breakdown knowing his career is over was sad. 3-4 place match was also crazy. Vitalo had the leg a few times but Albert kept funking him every time. Vitalo was so close and could have won that match. But again came down to the very end. But damn the Stein-Lawler match was high level crazy action. With both rowdy fan bases made it even more exciting.

160- Hontz breezed through everyone except he had a 1-0 match against Acevedo in the quarters. Acevedo a freshman having a nice year at 160. Too defensive though. Hubert was a 107 and 114 pounder his first two years. Saucon Valley let him eat his junior and senior year I guess.

172- Singer is a hammer. Dominated Fugazotto in the finals and hammered Lenzie in the quarters.

189- Adam Waters.

215-Did not see this match but Lawler and Singer no surprise.

285- Effendian in a class by himself. Heavy class is just so damn weak.

I mean no disrespect to any kid. Just trying to be honest with some thoughts. Congrats to every kid who made it to the regional tournament and qualified for states.
My son worked extremely hard for you to call him extremely weak and boring… you must have some great credentials to make some of these comments about high schoolers.

Double A would handle triple A with ease this year in an all star match. The Catholic schools are a force right now. Hard to imagine what the small school kid who only wrestles in the winter thinks at sections
here is how I would guess a potential All Star Match (state champ vs state champ) would go. AA probably wins big if the toss ups go 50-50

107-Toss

114-Toss

121- AA

127- Toss

133-AA

139- Toss

145-AA

152-Toss

160-Toss

172- AAA

189- AA

215- AA

285-AAA

Not so sure "with ease" except for AA having greater bonus potential. I'd have it as 7-4 with 2 toss-ups. And one AA weight flips if Sudun is healthy.

But it's the usual argument: either side could win champ vs champ in a given year. Hold a 40-man bracket with all qualifiers, and AAA gets more medalists.

Bingo, and the nature of the beast. The state placewinners in AAA will always come out of a bigger pond unless and until PA moves to making about the biggest 25% of schools AAA and the rest AA.

I don't think he called any kid weak or boring. He called some weight classes weak and boring. I have two sons currently wrestling in PA. If they are wrestling at a high level and you don't wanna hear shit talked about them, stay off the internet, especially Facebook lol. This was tame and not directed at anyone.

I mean I guess I don’t know how else I’d take it then. Unfortunately it’s not just on the internet. All you have to do is look at what just happened out in Jersey. Also, as a coach for the past ten years I can tell you that it has gotten progressively worse from parents and even other coaches. I could fill a small book with things just from the past two weeks. While you may feel it’s tame, it’s idiots like this that yell dumb crap from the stands or the side of the mat.

Yeah, if they are in the bracket they will be talked about both good and bad. Enjoy the fame.

Does it get worse every year than this from 2016?

It sure does. A Virginia kid took a dive at the request of his coach to stop a kid from being a 4Xer. So ridiculous. The only two people that will ever respect that kid are himself and his Coach. Am sure deep down even his parents are ashamed.

I ran the youth travel basketball league in Bangor School District area kids for almost 3 years from 2005-2007. I had 24 travel teams involving 240 kids.Plus an instructional beginner weekend camp involving 1st and 2nd graders. All parents had my land line house phone number.
Almost daily I would get a complaint from parents. 90% of calls were total BS. Examples;
"The old gym is to cold on Saturday morning" (Dress your child warmer) ,"The coach is not bringing a snack for end of practice"(You and the other parents can take turns if snacks are wanted).
I learned that the best response on the nuisance complaints was, " It's not a mandate that your child plays basketball". That normally stopped the bitching.
I can't imagine what it's like now .

To follow up on how parents have created a problem in youth sports. No one wants to get involved in officiating anymore.
Before I had hip replacement, I would ref youth basketball. I was in my 50s and wasn't going to be intimidated by parents and coaches. But when I would do a game with a younger person breaking in as a ref , a lot of them would get upset at the actions of coaches and parents .
They would decide reffing isn't for them.
The PIAA is having a terrible time getting officials. Watch the PA State football playoffs. Most of the officials are banking their Social Security money and officiating for beer money .

Wow. So I gave an honest assessment of the regional tournament. Where is your take? Oh right you just wanna take one little part out of it and twist it and make it sound like a personal attack. I never personally attacked your son but you made it about him. In fact YOU are the only one making it personal and calling me and idiot. What a hypocrite you are. I gave an honest run down and stand by what I said. So every weight was equal with talent and depth? Every weight was exciting? I guess everyone should get a trophy? Do you even read this forum? Every day people give opinions. Could you imagine if everyone got butt hurt and responded back to every message? Wow every single opponent of a psu kid, and opposing coaches, and opposing fans and posters on other forums would be responding back and going crazy for actually discussing wrestling.

To be honest I am not sure. I was there watching but also have other kids I follow and with so much going on I did not catch it. I do know the wolford and freddie match went real long so I would guess it was that match? Actually on floarena it looks like neither had injury time?
It was Freddy in a Friday night match. He rolled on his way to being mat returned and landed hard on the back of his skull/neck. It was gnarly.

please explain??
I saw a video. Kid got his arm wrenched in the semis. Looked like a hammer lock gone wild. They called PD then gave a penalty for unnecessary roughness. He looked hurt but I couldn't say whether he could have continued, although he wrestled in the finals and won.

After, the coach was tried to get the crowd amped up to cheer for him. Had he been carried off in a stretcher it might have been appropriate, but as it was he looked like a horses arse.

Are the girls quarters tonight?

Nevermind, I see the boys warming up. 11:20 tomorrow morning for girls quarters I think

A kid is going to wrestling at 8AM and 10:30pm tomorrow. Asinine
Kids should be fine. But the fans? Not so much.

Can we talk about how absurd it is to have AA quarters at 8 AM? I get that things are tough because they merged girls as well but 8 AM is a ridiculous start to a round when you consider weight cuts and weigh ins and warmups. Then they have to be back at 7.
Exactly like AAA Saturdays every year before girls got added.

I’ve never been to States. How many mats are used during these early rounds? I would assume 8. Is there another venue in the state that could accommodate more mats as well as the fans?

I don't remember how many mats were used yesterday, but today there are only 6 mats being used. 3 of the mats have quarterfinal matches & 3 are being used for consi matches.

More than once when a group of us would stay at truck stop in mid 1980s&90s we would pull an all nighter. The 7 other guys were from Pen Argyl and Easton so we would try to catch all the AA & AAA sessions. I remember one night being in a bar with a band playing and the drummer did a "Whipeout" solo. No one is on the dance floor and a good friend of mine who was probably on his 2nd handle of vodka gets up and dances to the beating drum in convulsion like movement.🤨. I'm pretty certain it was 1992, the year Kolat won his 4th. My buddies left between sessions and I slept in the Old Arena before the Finals .
Couldn't even consider that now. Good times.

If # mats are really an issue, then PIAA could always go back to 16 qualifiers.

It's more than a little silly for SW AA to get 7 qualifiers. For example.

AA 121 seeds:
1 – Will Detar, Trinity JR, SE-1, 39-1, S3-S2, Northwestern commit
2 – Brock Rothermel, Line Mountain SO, NE-1, 35-1, S3
3 – Tanner Guenot, Bald Eagle Area SO, SW-1, 45-7, S5
4 – Elijah Scriven, Hickory SO, NW-1, 41-6, SQ

Others (top):
- Dominic Deputy, Chestnut Ridge JR, SW-2, 45-4, S2, NC State

Others (bottom):
- Gauge Botero, Faith Christian SR, SE-2, 37-8, S3-S1-S6, Michigan

Excellent weight. Detar, Rothermel, Deputy, and Botero are all state champ-level wrestlers, and H2H have been close matches, often splits. Detar faces Deputy in the quarters. Botero faces Guenot in the quarters, winner gets Rothermel.

Predictions:
1 – Detar
2 – Rothermel
3 – Deputy
4 – Botero
5 - Guenot
Yes, appears to be one of most competitive brackets in AA.

Deputy over Detar in the Q-finals.

Rothermel now the favorite?

Had Rothermel as the favorite either way the way he’s looked in recent weeks but definitely now. But Botero and Deputy are both remarkably stingy.

Pleased to see my old high school Cedar Cliff advance 3 into the AAA Semi-Finals. Kavin Muyleart at 121, Aiden Herndon at 127, and Gunner Hiller at 285.

They've exceeded my expectations so far, but it would be nice to see at least one make the Finals.
