Paniro named in ISU gambling probe

I retired from Armed service too. And I can tell you an 18 year old private is a dumb as a bag of rocks. As was I. And there is constant supervision, and guidance. And depending on your MOS you are deployed or training all the time. At least I was. So that analogy doesn’t hold water with me but thank you immensely for your service.
I think we have coddled kids way too much recently. I don't give a **** what you do if you are 18 then you are an adult, and you have a responsibility to know the rules and follow the rules. Stating that 18 year olds are dumb and need guidance is not relevant that's obvious. However, it does not excuse behaviors that are stupid or dumb that's how you learn. Unfortunately some mistakes kill you and some don't either way a lesson needs to be learned

Are you a lawyer in Iowa ? Since the answer is likely NO, then I’d probably watch with all the definitive grandstanding. Funny how holy everyone seems to be all the sudden. Meanwhile their IP addresses pinging off porn sites at 3 am. And they are praying their wives don’t scour the bank accounts for their misdeeds.
I'm not a lawyer in Iowa, no, just a lawyer in NY who routinely advises on media law issues including defamation. But even if I wasn't, I'm also fully capable of asserting easily ascertainable and researchable facts about Iowa law.

From my understanding Paniro was the most egregious in his betting amounts. The others were very minimal amounts. I really don’t want to be the arbiter of truth or of punishment. Just not my expertise nor my place. It’s just my opinion that the world is different now, all of us are adapting to it. And none of us would want the world looking into our closets too deep. And when you throw into it, that the only reason this stuff is known was through illegal spying and probing, along with leading the kids to believe their cooperation meant NO trouble, now I have a problem with it.
So the others are only a little bit pregnant? The amount doesn't matter.

It sucks how they got caught, however, they did indeed get caught breaking the rules that they were made aware of. The reason why gambling infractions are taken so seriously is that it gets to the integrity of sporting events. The University of Iowa turned them in.

There isn't really a need to adapt to how it is today. There are a few guides to being successful in life, no matter the time that are timeless. Things like accountable for your actions, being on time, doing what you are told, etc.

To echo another poster, I too am glad that I did not grow up in a time where every stupid thing I did was recorded and broadcast to the world. But that has nothing to do with you are not allowed to place bets on sporting events involving your own university.

Now only if the NCAA did something about a program knowingly, willingly breaks rules and winning a national championship as a result or consistently applied its rules.

Not being argumentative, but what do you see as a fitting punishment? Wrestlers sit all the time for bumps and bruises. Missing a few matches, or even the first semester, is inconsequential. It’s gotten to the point (unfortunately) that the NCAA tournament is the only thing that counts. Would you have them wrestle but be ineligible for the NCAAs? Their coaches would probably wrestle someone else in their place all season to prep them for the tournament.
So when football players have been punished by missing the first couple meaningless non conference games all these years, they really should have been held out of title and bowl games?

Yes, if the “punishment “ is to actually be a real consequence for their behavior.
Edit: Football is a bad comparison as athletes are now skipping bowls. Bowl games, for the most part, are not analogous to NCAA championships

We need a meme for moving goal posts.

Drugs were a season suspended.
Tobacco use was kicked out of that particular match/game/tournament.
Gambling is a career ender.

It's so easy to understand. All one had to do was be half awake for these mandatory meetings and they would get it.

I still rember from the 90's .

And another part is learning the law and Civics and your civil rights. In NO part of my post did I say they shouldn’t be punished. Zero. Their careers should not be ended over a rogue agent.

We get it. You want to crucify the agent(s) you suspect of being overzealous and violating the law. But your hyper focus on their perceived misdeeds in a discussion about wrestlers losing eligibility for gambling in violation of ncaa rules suggests you can’t see that you’re conflating separate issues despite your claim to the contrary.

I really don’t want to be the arbiter of truth or of punishment.

Your repeated posts on this subject suggest otherwise.

Have you ever been an athlete in college? Since the answer is likely NO, then you haven't been through the presentation of things you can't do as an NCAA student/athlete.

Our team had to endure this lecture and it was emphasized that we couldn't bet on sports. If we did and got caught, our career was over.
Actually the answer is yes! 🙌

How about when you were 24 and were entering your 6th year of service? Did you get the same slack as an 18-year-old E1, or were you expected to have grown up by them? How many of the gambling offenders in these cases were 18-year-old freshmen? Hint: it is the same number of times that Bo Nickal lost to Iowa.

Their careers were not ended. They lost 1 year of eligibility. If they happened to be seniors, tough. But the punishment was not ending their careers, it was 1 year lost.

This is a very fair point. And I do consider that. I still do not agree with the way this information was found out. It allows NCAA full autonomy impose action against individuals when the information should have never seen the light of day.

If the IRS finds out from the NSA who decides to surveillance me, that I overstated my deductions due to an email etc. then that information was obtained illlegally. All of you who are maintaining the NCAA should continue to have this unchecked authority blow my mind. But we are all allowed to disagree and that’s fine.

For the sake of not ruining my Saturday, I’m going to go golfing with my little 11 year old girl and remove myself from these conversations. Have a good day fellas. Cheers 🍻. NCAAs in two weeks :)

Three weeks!

I’ll take a stab at this.

I don’t have all the facts but I’ve consumed much of what has been published and have a good knowledge base in general on gambling and gambling as it relates to college athletes .

Meaning I do not think it’s as simple as they broke the rules therefore ban the athlete forever. And clearly the ncaa didn’t either as they modified the punishment mid stream . One reason people protest is to modify existing rules not to absolve the rule breakers themselves.

I believe the betting that was done was harmless , no point fixing , no inside knowledge was used to change the results of a game etc.. etc.. However I do remember one punter or player who I think bet on the under in a game he played, that would have harsher penalties in my mind than my answer below.

1. Two match suspension for wrestlers.
2. Community service with a gear towards gambling, whether it’s working a hotline or helping gambling addicts in some capacity
3. Participate in the schools gambling presentations to all athletes

I might also add that I’d prevent the athlete from making posts like you see above from Brands were the athlete does not assume 100 percent responsibilities for his/her actions.

I’ll spare you my personal opinions on the NCAA , NCAA rules as they relate to gambling, and I’ll spare you the overall countless statistics on how many college athletes gamble. I’ll just say for me when I put it all in context 1 year is too large a penalty.

Well heck if that’s all those boys did they’d still be wrestling!

Sure people in their 20's are idiots. The only thing they are good for is looking better than people in their 30's and 40's. If i had my way they would all just strike a pose and shut the hell up. It doesn't get them off the hook for their actions.

I use a VPN when I look for porn, and there are no misdeeds to be found in my accounts. I am, however thoroughly impressed by your righteousness.

Nelson Brands is 25 years old with a wife and a house. He’s not a kid in even the broadest interpretation of the word.
Hell, at that age I was living and working in Indonesia. I don't understand 20 somethings living in the basement. The 20s can be the best years of your life before settling down.

I must have been busy watching you preaching the good news in the courtyard of the ethics class from your rather large bully pulpit. So likely I did miss it. Maybe next time.
Ummm.. I ran a small gambling ring as a college athlete. I sold batches of the football betting tickets.

I was a broke student wanting a few bucks to take girls to dinner and a movie. I knew the risks 🤷‍♂️

Speak for yourself! I'm better looking at 40 than I was at 20. Just ask my wife.
And my girlfriend
