Paul Suhey

Exactly. Jr. was touting Sr.'s wares. He should expect no less than derision and anger. Lar used to be a good poster. What happened?

I suspect this is why jr. folded up the tent pretty quickly and didn't protest. Kudos to him on that front. And kudos to the chapter for taking action.

Like so many kerfuffles on this board, some of the more important points get lost in the tangential, misdirectional arguments.

We have people here who would like us to flog ourselves for dissing a strand of the Suhey family. This is truly ridiculous, given what we know of the internal disagreements in the Suhey family itself over all of this.

Let's go tangential off of that again, why don't we?
Tangentially speaking and chronically obfuscating. OGBOT truisms.

Interesting reading in this thread. I suppose I will offer my opinion. Any anger or derision directed at Jr. is misplaced, though I haven't seen much of that here as opposed to Sr. If he and the board had been open about what occurred this probably would not have happened. But having his son embarrassed by having his appearance cancelled due to the association with his name should send a pretty strong message to Sr. If he is a good father- and I have read nothing to state that he is not- he will sacrifice himself for the good of his son. Will be interesting to see if we hear from him.

Good post. Just one point, it appears Jr. was hocking Sr.'s product and company. So, in this case, the difference between Jr. and Sr. is razor thin.

There is nothing wrong with the son hocking the father's product. Hock away. I have no problem with the son working for his father and trying to make a buck. Likewise, I have no problem with people choosing to not help the son make a buck due to the father's ability to also make a buck off of it and his involvement in the mess of the last four years.

Anyone who is not willing to be personally accountable for his/her actions is part of the problem.

That extends to social media and message boards.

What "actions" are you talking about?
People were dismayed about the Houston chapter promoting a company that's owned by a guy who demanded that Erickson drag away Paterno's statue with a tractor.
So what?

I tend to agree with your assessment. It's unfortunate that his kid stepped into a hornets nest but you need to watch where you step.

I think that the people who created this mess - including Paul Jr's dad - have created such a bubble for themselves to live in that they really don't understand the lasting anger throughout the entire Penn State community. I suspect that Suhey Peppers has a bucketload of unsold inventory and they thought would try to unload some in Houston, far away from the zealots of State College. Clearly at least one member of the Houston chapter wasn't pleased, or we never would have heard about it. And I doubt that the chapter made the decision to pull the plug based one what it was hearing from people outside the chapter. The people who made this mess are learning that Penn Staters have long memories, and that doesn't apply just to the people in Centre County (or even PA).

The bubble they created is not just for themselves, it seems to also be intended to encircle some residents of the State College area. I am astonished that folks would rise to carry their water.

Who was Suhey to be giving orders to Erickson, and what kind of jackass was Roidney to obey them?

My core values haven't changed one bit, but this board sure has. It's turned into nothing more than a lynch mob of raving lunatics with pitchforks. Truly sad.

I've been a paying member of this site for 15 years but, like many, have had it with the attitude here. I cancelled my membership a couple of months ago. Still lurk a bit but none of my dollars are going to support this mess any longer.

Lar, who do you feel this board has unfairly targeted? Paul Suhey Sr? Bruce Heim? Keith Olbermann? Jamelle Hill? David Witvoet? Dan Bernstein? Desmond "Mushmouf" Howard?

Just trying to understand your perspective. Thanks.

I have been on this board since Aug 2001, and it's no different now than it ever has been. Your core values have not changed, but your perspective may have. Now, instead of being part of the lynch mob, you are sit in judgment of it.

Grow up, move on, and explore all the facts before jumping to conclusions. And, separately, do it with class - use Joe Pa's life as a positive, and think about what he would say.

Move on? HAHAHA. No.

BTW, you should have explored all the facts before you wrote this. Now go back and read the post you wrote and reflect on it a while. Is it your notion that Paul Suhey Jr. did us a favor by attending PSU? That is a curious notion, at best. You mean he turned down a better education elsewhere to burnish our rep with his fabulosity? I sure hope he is not as you describe him here. I don't even know the kid.

BTW, he attended HS just up the road from me here at Mercersburg Academy. My daughter was close friends with some folks who knew him. Like you say, seems like a nice kid. The Houston chapter wanted to trade on the family name. They found out the family name is in some quarters not such a valuable commodity. Tough one.

I love when folks use the rationale that Joe would have forgiven or been able to "let it be." I met Joe only on a few occasions and he wouldn't know me from Adam as they say. However, I don't think anyone should characterize him as anything but a competitor and a principled individual. Part of that is to aggressively pursue and rectify injustice. I think some people confuse the 84 year old JVP with terminal cancer and his actions or lack there of.My belief is more than a few trustees and others (LIKE TOMMY BOY) would have felt his wrath and that is why they didn't have the courage to mess with him a long time ago. JVP didn't attain and retain his position without savvy, intellect and a willingness to mix it up a little.

Sorry you feel that way, but I have no idea what you are talking about. Of course I do not live in SC, and have no personal or professional relationships with those who tried to systematically destroy Penn State to hide their own culpability. I specifically have never had anything to do with the Suheys beyond rooting for my class of 80 classmate Matt 35-40 years ago.

You must feel like you have something to protect in SC. I don't. That does not make either one of us raving lunatics. It also does not mean that one opinion is automatically superior to another. I might fully understand/accept Paul Suhey Sr.'s position and why he did what he did if he ever deigned to speak about it in public, or I might not. I can only assume he has not done so because he suspects if the public knew the whole truth the public would not be very happy with him. He can fix that at any time, and so can Heim. They chose another path. That is their right, just as it is my right to despise them for their self-serving secrecy.

What you do not get to do is purport to have some inside info you cannot share which absolves them both of all wrongdoing. Put your info up and let's talk it over. Otherwise you are asking me to simply trust that they are both okay because you say so. Given that WE have never met, that seems unreasonable, no?

I'm just pissed I wasn't issued a pitchfork.

Instead I must rely on my plebeian wit.
And here I was going to say your lack of intelligence is exceeded only by your lack of wit....but I'm not sure about your plebeian wit :)I'll ship you a pitchfork from out here in ASU Sun Devil country

Just to be clear, I speak only for myself. Before 11/9/11, I didn't own a pitch fork. The actions of Paul Suhey and his buddies that night (and continuing even 4 years later) motivated me to visit the hardware store. I'm not getting any younger and the pitch fork is getting heavy, but I'm not putting it down until the trustees end their cover up.

Just because you don't agree with everything I said, doesn't mean I got my facts wrong. Never said he did a favor, I was just throwing out an example. John Urschel also could have gone to Stanford, but came to Penn State and we should be proud of that. They are both great for the community, the only difference being that you don't hate John's father and John played football.

There are two ways I look at "move on." I have not moved on, but I also direct my anger and disagreement at the correct people (San*****, the BoT, NCAA). Senator Corman is an example. He didn't move on, and he pushed forward in a POSITIVE way that JVP would've wanted. He didn't try to bash or mock the son of a BoT member for a hobby that he was pursuing. You say he shouldn't represent the Suhey name. I would agree, IF there wasn't a man named Matt Suhey.

And yes, I'm very familiar with that school...

respectfully, its not this board by the hypocrisy of the BOT and PSU leadership that is at fault. They clearly have not been transparent and they clearly sold the university down the river on several occasions. Did they have to do this? Perhaps, but show us.

When it comes to Penn State, I am reminded of what Ronald Reagan said when asked why he left the Democratic Party "I didn't leave them, they left me." That's how I feel about everything Penn State except for the kids playing sports.

did John's father sell our University down the river, and act like an arrogant buffoon when he was called to the carpet on his actions?

must have missed that . . .

but your spin on Suhey is entertaining. No one tainted the Suhey name except a Suhey.

as for me? I could have gone to the Naval Academy or Michigan. I chose Penn State. but I'm not so self involved to think I did PSU a favor. Penn State did a lot for me, and I am grateful for my time there, and the family that the local alumni chapter has become.

I'm not privy to any inside information. What I am saying is, regardless of what Paul Suhey SR may or may not have done, Paul Suhey JR does not deserve the wrath that he has gotten. He has done no wrong but is being figuratively castrated just because of his name. That is pathetic.

No one is bashing Paul Suhey Jr.
The original announcement made it appear that Paul Suhey Sr was going to be at the Houston chapter to push his product, and people complained.
And even if the original announcement said that Joe Blow was there to promote Suhey Peppers, people would have been right to object.
If Suhey Peppers tries to make an appearance at my chapter I will object. I don't want my chapter doing anything that puts money in Paul Suhey Sr's pockets.

You are imagining things. Who has directed any wrath at Junior?
