PDIII to make his debut??

Not only did he fly the plane but he also....using a large chain.....pulled the plane by HIMSELF....on to the proper runway and then proceeded to run full tilt until the plane reached takeoff speed.....at which time he vaulted on to the landing gear and rode it into the belly of the plane. He then proceeded to the cockpit....tore off the door......tossed the pilot to his back for the quick pin....and then proceeded to take the plane to altitude.....blindfolded....... using only his knees.... while taking out the Co-pilot with a rear-naked choke. At this point PDII took over as Co-pilot. They both then took out their junk and set course for Columbus.......Georgia
... and he speaks Jive.

(Though I'd be careful about "they both took out their junk" when talking about the Downeys. It might end up on Instragram.)

Not going to win any fashion awards. Might win a couple of matches. That basic guy look. Nothing , I suppose, wrong with it. Nothing, though, really right about it. There once was a day when some teams, especially on travel days, had to wear a tie or turtleneck for matches. Those days are dead. Just curious if there are teams with (suggested) dress codes. The Minnesota coaches seem to have an internal competition for being the fashionista of the match. Okie State goes for the vests.
Turtleneck? When was that, 1972? Were they required to wear the full Village People outfit or just bell bottoms?

Did anyone else just become a Myles Martin fan? I mean, I admired him but never would have called myself a fan.. Now for some reason there is this feeling deep down that makes me want to stand up and cheer loudly for him on Sunday. I'm so confused right now!!!! Anyone have any advice? :)
just say no!

The problem is not fashionability. The problem is uniformity, conformity, or monoculture. Either the people have the same bland taste (except for one bright blue vest), or they fear to express themselves due to a shrinking nature or to a repressive team environment. Where’s the blast in that?! The binder needs a new chapter on the statistical improbability of blast people on a blast team independently choosing to look like 1950s Warsaw Pact.

I think we're being a bit harsh on these kids. They look fine to me, except the one in the pink sneakers ;)

Looking at the photo of the boys trying to look like ... well, I'm flummoxed, honestly - I'm just wondering why a guy in the front row is standing on his tiptoes?

I'm just marveling at how the U of Iowa has a budget to allow their wrestling team to fly! UNI drives to all of their bouts.

I will have the popcorn popped if PDIII goes against MM. But I'm breaking out the beanbag chair and the Cheetos for the PDII/MMDad online throwdown!!

I'm guessing UNI isn't slated to make $51MM this year from Television deals alone like Iowa and the other fully vested Big Ten schools are pulling in? ;)

Yeah, I guess that's the difference, but it just seems odd that we're also a part of the other two Regent's schools as well, even though we get less allocated to us than ISU and Iowa.

What are the odds that PD III made the trip to Ohio and will be wrestling at 184 later today. What are the odds that the photo deliberately left him out to build up the suspense and surprise?? What are the odds that this post gets far more laughs than likes? I am going to go with Tee Hee, Chortle Chortle, Guffaw Guffaw

Downey is like the fictional character in Samuel Beckett's play, "Waiting for Godot". Everyone talks about him and waits for him but he never shows up or arrives. In the play, one can reasonably conclude that God(ot) actually doesn't exist.

Or perhaps Downey is just a character created by the comedian and performance artist, Andy Kaufman, who was into inter-gender wrestling at one point.

Ban- Doug is doing an incredible job with the program up there despite being out funded, out faciltied(made up word), and having to recruit in a state like ours with a declining pool of high school talent. Bono is doing similar things at SDSU. It is not going unnoticed, and yet another reason the Jackson tenure at ISU was so unbearable. I will always be a fan of UNI wrestling.

Was wondering how many takes were required to get a shot where everyone was smiling and looking like they were having a blast ;)

Hey watch it! I still wear turtlenecks. Of course, I do a lot of outside work so making a fashion statement isn’t necessarily my first thought while getting ready in the mornings.

Yes, all of that that you say is true; UNI athletics has always had to do more with less. Just have to start making it really materialize on the mat the way that we are expecting it to. SDSU today will be a good test.

This board can always use more Kaufman.

I'm curious what the obsession with this idiot is about? Is there a Gilman Gap now that his hijnx are irrelevant? Is there a hushed nostalgia for Ramos, who now stares into an abyss rather than his opponent's eyes? Iowa does seem to produce it annual Fool or Clown(y) , perhaps in large part because it is no longer the cream of the crop. Who is competing for the top spot next year?

On HR, a few weeks ago, there were at least three PD3 threads showing on the first page, and everyone pointing to tOSU. But as they headed in to that bout there was radio silence, no PD3 threads. Now there is a new one, with arguments about the roster. Some saying he is on, other pointing to the web site with no mention of him. People said they couldnt update the online because there was ateam picture, or just because they could not update. It was pointed out that PSU added Carson to the web page. Then it was all about the picture and how they could not add people not in the picture, but the picture showed 36 wrestlers and bios of only 34, so I guess they can remove people but not add, because it is so hard to update websites now a days.

Pretty funny discussions and theories.

Per Ironsides. No one in the wrestling program knows status and are as frustrated as fans. I have to wonder if this is a NCAA issue. I read the rules regarding a one time transfer exception and the rules regarding transferring after graduation. It is assumed he is eligible since he graduated. I’m wondering if there is an issue of Being on his third D-1 team Nebraska, Iowa State, and Iowa. Still absent from roster. Maybe one of you rules guys can set me straight.

Most people dress poorly these days. In fact, it's encouraged. You seem like the kind of person who might enjoy reading Jacques Barzun's book, 'From Dawn to Decadence: 500 Years of Western Cultural Life.' Barzun is neither inherently conservative or inherently liberal, as we understand those terms, but he does condemn (with good reason) what he calls "demotic" life.

It used to be normal for middle class working men to wear suits. Nowadays? Never. Especially compared to before the 1960s. I don't think the hippies were evil, in fact they had some sense to some of their points (and who can dislike Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir?), but they blew out of proportion their attack on conformity. Conformity is underrated; conformity isn't bad as long as you're conforming to something that makes sense. Nowadays, we actually conform to dressing with mediocrity. And, really, even past the 1960s, athletic teams like this Hawkeye wrestling team would often dress better than this for traveling. You know, sweaters and polos and the like. By contrast, now, I mean, that one guy in the front is wearing slippers. Who goes out in public like that? Come on. But I'm not condemning Iowa; it's just the culture now.

I don't mind casual dress in public, to a point, but it's just getting well past ridiculous

You're right, Iowa is not the cream anymore, and these clowns on their team and their antics are essentially Iowa standing up and screaming "pay attention to me" because nobody cares about watching their slow, plodding, backing up, stalling style of wrestling anymore. They miss the attention that Iowa wrestling used to get. People are more interested in watching teams like PSU go out and put an offensive show.

Hey! I just took that book off my shelf two weeks ago, for my middle school kid to have as an emergency encyclopedia of sorts (because an old-school debate tournament would not allow Internet during prep time).

That crazy-ambitious book (history of ~all human civilization) was great until it got to modern times. I don’t know whether that means only the modern part was substandard or merely that I’m knowledgeable enough only about the modern stuff to spot the guy’s logical flaws.

But, yeah, people are dressing more poorly than ever. When my little girl goes to the opera, little old ladies always *thank* her for dressing up. Every time. Times change!

He is probably having the same issues as Kuhn re weight certification and descent. Plus the many other possible issues that come with being a PD.

I think I saw somewhere that PD3 reportedly was going to wrestle 197 at Midlands because he wanted to be able to "enjoy the holidays". So who knows what he weighs these days

PDIII = Sasquatch II

Remember when PDIII was definitely, 100% going to win a national title last year? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Yes, I do. Now he will win this year, at least PDII & PDIII think that. Me, I'm not convinced he is going to wrestle this season at all, and he certainly is not going to win NCAAs.

I don't know, I think he is a lock to win it unless the NCAA officials rig the bracket for Nickal and Martin, his opponents refuse to cede an advantageous upper body position to the funky bunky, or the matches last longer than the initial TD. In any case, we will know who the real champ is no matter what the outcome.;)

I need to find the hilarious clip of Kyven Gadson launching Downey at a practice and then laughing at him. Would make a good gif
