Penn State 2019 Season articles

That is a really nice collection of D-line talent. Everybody looks healthy. We've seen what this defensive staff can do with 3 star players -- they put them in the NFL. Now for the first time we'll see what they can do with 4 star and 5 star athletes.

This is a young team who has a chance to have a big year this year and an even bigger year next year. Two freshman 5 star players behind the senior linebackers. True frosh CB Keaton Ellis was running 2nd string yesterday. Loser of the Thorpe/Miranda battle at RG will take over for Gonzo next year at LG.

From practice, 1st string.

Offense has 1 player who has senior eligibility

4* QB Clifford, RS So ("Most Accurate" at Elite 11)
5* RB Slade, So
5* WR Shorter, RS Fr
4* WR Hamler, RS So (Freshman AA)
4* WR Dotson, So
4* TE Freiermuth, So (Freshman AA)
4* LT Walker, RS Fr (Top 100 Recruit)
3* LG Gonzalez, RS Sr
5* C Menet, RS Jr
3* RG Miranda, RS So
4* RT Fries, RS Jr

Defense, 1st string

Defense has 4 players with senior eligibility.

4* DE Gross-Matos, Jr (20 TFL in 2018)
3* DT Windsor, RS Sr (7.5 sacks in 2018)
3* DT Shelton, RS Jr
3* DE Toney, RS Jr
4* LB Brown, Sr
WO LB Johnson, Sr
5* LB Parsons, So (Freshman AA)
4* CB Reid, RS Sr

The potential for 2020 is amazing and regardless that team’s depth chart will look real nice, but I suspect after a very successful 2019 a bunch of guys leaving eligibility on the table. Granted, I’m thinking there won’t be much left to accomplish at the college level with how good I think 2019 could be.

Could be. That's the same for every school. That's where the two Top 10 classes (247 #3 and #7) that PSU just landed come in. Very few of those guys are starting yet. The depth is the best talent PSU has had in decades.

Thanks for that. It's nice to be reminded that this is not a young D. Lots of juniors and seniors, and the kids backing them up are going to be awesome. It should be a really good mix of talent and experience.

Really glad if Shorter is practicing with the 1st string. There has been so little said about him by the coaches, I had started to worry that he just wasn't what they thought they were getting. If he's practicing with the 1s that's a really positive sign IMHO because this offense needs size at wideout to complement Hamler and Dotson.

Focus more on the running game?

“Buckeyes have been working under center quite a bit this year per Justin Fields”

The good thing about this year is, we'll know who they are by the time the game rolls around (along with ourselves). I don't remember any snaps under center from OSU last year though. Not saying they didn't occur, but my memory is not recalling it.

Fields did take some snaps under center at UGA, I believe. Perhaps it's for his comfort? Running scheme? Definitely not a sign that they are going to sling it a la Haskins. Of course, with Dobbins returning and the best WRs in the NFL, adaption might be necessary. Is it a sign of good coaching or making due? TBD...

Yeah, you don’t want to go too crazy. Have to see how it looks Game 1. Tea leaves haven’t been positive since spring. The one accepted insider on one of their boards said recently “Fields would have benefited from a redshirt.” Doesn’t sound like the #4 player in preseason Heisman odds or whatever that horseshit was.

Just for the record Rivals had Will Fries as a 4*
not that it matters. In any event, the team is indeed young and fast..... and bigger after DR Galt .... the should be fun to watch.

Franklin was lighting up Wade at the practice media was able to attend. Brisker has a shot at safety, no doubt. Seeing what Dixon is listed at, now leaning to thinking that maybe he gets the 4 games played redshirt. Smith Vilbert I think is the sleeper in this class. He is going to be a stud at DE.

NO. 7: S JAQUAN BRISKER
9360413.jpg

Jaquan Brisker is a junior college transfer who has the physical tools (6-1, 210) to contribute immediately but must learn the defense.

NO. 10: LB LANCE DIXON
9360416.jpg

9360417.jpg

Lance Dixon is another January enrollee. Listed at 6-2, 213 now, he clearly has some filling out to do. But he has been lauded for his athleticism.

NO. 20: DE ADISA ISAAC
9360420.jpg

Speaking of freak athletes, Adisa Isaac is now listed at 6-4, 241. The January enrollee is considered one of the best all-around athletes on the team.

NO. 92: DE SMITH VILBERT

9360426.jpg

Smith Vilbert is a summer enrollee and another impressive physical specimen in this class. He is listed at 6-6, 253, and is said to be one of the Nittany Lions' best basketball players.

NO. 12: LB BRANDON SMITH
9360542.jpg

Brandon Smith also arrived in January. He already has the look of a freak athlete, measuring in at 6-3, 240 with room to get even bigger.

I’m not questioning the talent, but Dixon looks awfully small to play linebacker. As the article says, he needs to fill out.

Could someone please clarify the comment about Wade? “Lighting up” as in ripping him a new one?

“Lighting up” in this context means that he was saying very good things about Wade. I think Brisker has some work to do to beat him out - and if he does, then that says a lot more about Brisker than it does about Wade, because Wade is going to be a very good player this year.

After the first-string Penn State D gave up a deep passing play (K.J. Hamler looked the best of PSU’s receivers), Franklin — from his coaching vantage point deep in the secondary — took off after Wade, who was playing safety along steady and cerebral veteran Garrett Taylor. Franklin pointed vigorously and yelled pointedly. He was not happy with Wade.

This is not something Franklin typically does. Not with this fervor. And not in the negative. Even in practice, he’s more often the hopping and high-fiving guy you see on the Penn State sidelines. And if not, he’s a pretty low-key and respectful teacher when it comes to criticism, quietly pulling a player aside.

A play or two later, Franklin – still positioned a good 15 yards behind Wade— did it again, lighting into Wade. After Wade did it again.

Ouch.

Delaney's going away present to Penn State? What are the odds that a random schedule generator would have Penn State having to play Ohio State and Michigan back to back in so many years, except for the years when they play OSU, Iowa, and Michigan back to back to back?

Consecutive weeks:

2020 @ Mich, Iowa, OSU
2021 Mich, @ OSU
2022 OSU, @Mich
2023 @ OSU, Iowa, Mich
2024 OSU, @Mich
2025 @ OSU, Mich

The disparity of “sportswriters who have only looked at Penn State’s roster” and “sportswriters who have actually watched video of the players on Penn State’s roster” continues in full force. The former are the group who are predicting a 7-5 year. The latter - like the guy in this video - are the ones who seem to be predicting much bigger things.

Sometimes it's because expectations are high. Wade's a third year player and they are certainly hoping he will be starter material either at safety or nickel. But truth is, we don't really know what Franklin is like at practice. He was putting on a show for the cameras yesterday.

Wouldn't put it past him. If Delaney didn't hate PSU to begin with, maybe getting booed in 2016 on national TV did the trick.
