A couple of the Nittany Lions' new defensive tackles — German import Joseph Darkwa and Dvon Ellies — passed the eyeball test.

Junior college transfer Jaquan Brisker (7) and junior Lamont Wade (38), who are competing for playing time at safety, seem to be getting along very well.

At the close of practice. Virginia Tech transfer kicker Jordan Stout worked a kickoff. He boomed the kick well beyond the end zone, drawing an initial reaction from Franklin and then more feedback from his new teammates.

It kind of sums up the preseason prognostications. If you focus on the offensive coaching problems PSU had last year, if you doubt Franklin's ability to win the close games, plus replacing McSorley -- then 8-4 makes sense.

If you follow recruiting, if you're in the "Jimmys and Joes" camp, then 10 wins seems doable. You see that PSU has recruited at a top 6-8 level the last 3 years. It's more talent than I've seen on a PSU roster back to the early 90s. Depth and speed everywhere and depth and speed is really what separates top 10 teams from 2nd 10 teams.

I guess for me this season pivots on MSU. If Franklin could go to East Lansing and handle a good Michigan State team, that would be a milestone for this program I think, that would be the biggest signal they can give the college football world (and themselves) that PSU still has more room to grow.

Hmmmm. Really surprised but their views on the QB situation. Maybe this offense is really going to take time to round into form.
I was thinking the same thing. Interesting they thought that Clifford & Levis are so close. However, they are only there for one practice, so they don't have the larger sample that the coaches have seen. I would expect a starter to be named around next Sunday because they are then getting into game prep for the opener the final 2 weeks of camp. Whomever is selected will be the one that has the confidence of the coaches & players. That said, I really expect the backup to see some extended PT with the ones during the OOC because the relative inexperience of both demands they receive meaningful game experience in case of injury.

honestly i'm not...its not so much them saying these guys don't have talent its just they really do seem close to each other in ability...also I think it was their first glimpse of Levis and they were like "who is this guy?"...in a good way...Levis looks like an NFL QB right now from a physical standpoint...has a cannon and is a good athlete...but Clifford seems to have that "it" factor too me plus u hear the same thing from pretty much all the players of him being a great leader...that means a lot...plus I think Clifford throws a very catchable ball...but also has good zip on throws when necessary and is a pretty good athlete...bottom line I just think they have two good qb's (how good is the question)...I think they could win with either
