Penn State Defensive Line

I hope Jordan will be available by September. I think we should have some talent at DT on the roster next year, but a lot of inexperience.
DE is a different story. We appear to be loaded.

Interior Defensive Lineman on Roster
Name Weight Yrs Remaining
Givens 287 2
Jordan 293 3 *
Hansard 310 4
Windsor 303 2
Shelton 302 3
Bolds 285 4
Mustipher 300 4
Hawkins 280 4

6 of these guys have had red shirts and therefore have an additional season in the system.
* indicates recovering from broken knee cap
Given the superb rotation system used by the best DL coach in college football.... I would suggest we are gonna be just fine.

I think Buchholz will slide into the interior situationally. Also Ellison Jordan has only 3 years remaining.

Wonder why you were Rx’d valium instead of Flexeril ?

I have had issues with Flexeril in the past. Most everything is healing now but the tinnitus is all over the map. It is obviously aggravated when I do certain physical actions. Otherwise it seems to come and go as it pleases. I really feel for those that have it constantly.

DL and Secondary will be the Defensive strengths in 2018. It will be young, athletic, and relentless. Too bad about Jordan but Hansard, Shelton, Bolds, and Mustipher will be more than capable of supporting Givens and Windsor. DE’s will be the same. Chaos likes to go with a 10 man rotation.

Yes, likely "just fine". But as 83wuzme said, the interior DL will be short on experience, and it will take some time to short out the rotation that will be most effective to line up against our better opponents. I believe we will miss the departed 3 seniors (Cothran, Cothren, and Chavis) for much of the 2018 season. Only Givens, Windsor and Buchholz (when he plays DT) have much experience, and we have not seen enough of the other DT's that have played sparingly (Shelton and Jordan) to know how they will perform if they end up in the main 2018 DT rotation.

Obviously the good news is that Hansard and Bolds will be coming off redshirt season and reportedly have the talent to contribute as young players. And we may see a true freshman such as Mustopher contribute as well, but true freshmen DT's are unlikely to be game changers.

With no DT's in their last year of eligibility and top talent added, DT performance should get better each year going forward...

I no longer get to worked up in the off-season about what talent there is coming back, or how short the team is in experience.
My thoughts go back to that Carl Nassib kid. ;)

I'll give Coach Chaos the winter and spring to get them ready for August. If come the season there are issues, then I'll scratch where it doesn't itch.

All interesting comments - but we need to add a couple more bits of insight/info to the above. Insight: DT is the easiest position on the field come in game ready. Info: Jordan and Shelton appeared in 6 games each this past season. So, they have a little game experience. I think the knee cap question is large for Jordan, but the first half of the schedule should help bring the others along behind the three seasoned guys should help by mid year. I worry more about lb.

I thought Jordan looked better as the season went on. Shelton, I didn’t see enough of to get an idea.
From what I have read, kneecaps aren’t usually as big of a deal as something like an ACL or even an MCL.
I am more concerned about MLB and FS than DT at this time.
We are basically replacing the middle of our defense.

Most exciting thing is how we're stockpiling this roster with "Plan A" DL prospects.

Micah Parsons
PJ Mustipher
Jayson Oweh
Aeneas Hawkins (NFL blood)
Judge Culpepper (NFL blood)

Next year we're going after Harrison, Alfano, Brandon Smith, Faucheaux, etc. We need to hit on those targets. Still have a big need for elite pass rushers.

No, DT is not the easiest position to come in and be game ready to play well. Yes, a young player can come in a "play", just usually not very well. Just ask CJF, who has stated on numerous occasions that it is easier to play as a freshman the farther away from the ball/LOS you play. On defense that would be (easiest to hardest) CB,S,OLB ,MLB,DE,DT. A very young DT player does not have the strength and understanding of the defense, as well as the refined techniques, to make the plays necessary to win games against top competition like the duh-oh-high-ya oline. Jordan and Shelton are just getting started in their development and there was nothing in their 2017 limited performance to make me believe either one could be inserted into the lineup and expect a game performance at the level that we received from any of Cothran, Cothren, or Chavis.

Yes, lots of concerns at LB. But a player such as Brown has incredibly more experience than either Jordan or Chavis, and baring injuries the LB's do not come out of games for rest much..... Unfortunately the injuries to LB's over the last couple of years made LB depth (the lack of it) a glaring deficiency of the 2016 and 2017 rosters. And as we know it won't be solved until the current LB roster gets a little more seasoned.....

Yes, it will be quite a DL roster, and could be dominating as they mature and see the field...... but they aren't here yet, and will the majority of them take some time to develop into star players. That's what makes college football so interesting!

Like Nassib, the freshman is an “athletic freak,” according to teammate Ryan Buchholz. Gross-Matos, who runs a 4.5-second 40-yard dash, wears a 17 or 18-sized shoe. “They're ginormous,” Buchholz said shaking his head. “They have to special order them every time.”

4.5 forty?

Shelton was beating double teams, or holding his own in one of the games this year. It was in garbage time against inferior opponents, but I thought he looked promising. He doesn't look like he weigh's as much as his listed weight.
