FB Recruiting Penn State finds game changing WR in Kent State’s Dante Cephas

So......explain all the talk on here about Cephas having academic issues and perhaps having to go somewhere else to get his grades up. ???

Or was that just "spin" in case he committed somewhere else?😉

Where did Cephas go to high school in the Pittsburgh area: Penn Hills or North Hills?

I've seen both regarding Cephas.

He is still going back to Kent state for the spring.

He's committing to get a spot on the roster, but he has to graduate from Kent State to be eligible. Sadly, he can't come take part in our S&C, spring practice, etc al. However, he will have the summer and fall to get in line with Allar and the playbook.

Not sure what you are wondering about.

Pretty safe to say he won’t be doing spring practice with Kent State. So does hire a coach to help him prep for us? Can PSU send a grad assistant to get him up to speed on the play book? Is he permitted to join the team for workouts on weekends? Or on spring break/ holidays? How does this work?

That's a good question(s). I'm sure he can be sent all the materials needed to learn our offense. Can he take his credits remotely? Can NIL pay for an off campus apartment? Can he participate in our off season stuff before he's enrolled?

I have no clue.

In today’s NCAA we can probably do all those things, plus give him a car and place him on an NIL salary. However, if we buy him a burger somebody better not lie about it.

He is not coming until he completes the spring semester at Kent State

‘Game changing WR’ seems to be a bit confident. Hope he lives up to the hype.
Especially since he won't be at spring practice.

I've got to think we're done at WR. PSU is at 86 scholarships and 12 of them are WRs.

I don't see many options for a big DT.

Yep, and that would make him a team mate of Hardy.
And a good team it was.

Penn Hills Football team wins 2018 state championship

Why be the best Class 5A team in Western Pennsylvania, when you have playmakers like Daequan Hardy, Hollis Mathis, Terry “Tank” Smith, Corey Thomas Jr. and Dante Cephas?
Thus, two weeks after winning the WPIAL title, Penn Hills messed around and won the whole shebang—the PIAA Class 5A State Championship.

Thanks to another beloved figure—Bill Fralic, the Penn Hills and Pitt star whom also had a standout career in the NFL—the entire Penn Hills football team was able to stay at a hotel near Hershey the night before the Dec. 7 championship game. All costs were covered by Fralic.
The Indians were well-rested for their opponent, Manheim Central, out of Lancaster County. At one point in the Friday night affair, Penn Hills had a 36-14 lead, thanks to an incredulous performance by Hardy, who put the official scorer to work. Hardy scored on a 100-yard interception (one of his three interceptions in the game), an 84-yard kickoff return, and two receptions of 74 and 27 yards.
“Tank” Smith rushed for 103 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown, Mathis threw for 195 yards with three touchdowns, and Cephas added a team-high four receptions for 66 yards.

What’s the big deal? Cephas has only verbaled to PSU and a lot can happen between now and May. First he has to graduate from KSU. Second, now a new coach is coming in and who knows who he will bring with him. Third, he isn’t a game changer and appears to be no better than KLS. Fourth, you got 4 young guys vying for time and all were very pretty highly thought off coming out of HS. Wake me up in May and we’ll see where we are. I like what we got. Cephas ain’t no Tinsley.

People may want to pump the brakes on the excitement. Is he a good receiver? Yes. Was he a gamer breaker at Kent State? No, which means he probably won't be a game breaker here. What he was at KSU was their #2 receiver behind Devontez Walker who is headed to UNC. Their 3# is off to WVU. How he slots into our offense is more of a possession receiver with speed. He looks to me more of a poor man's DaeSean Hamilton which means he is roughly equal to Tinsley. He'll come in and start day one because he is better than what we have so welcome.

I'd welcome a 'possession receiver with speed', especially with this new QB and running game. I'll take a D Hamilton or even a Jordan Norwood as complementary players any time. Not every team has a number one receiver that can be a number one anywhere. Even with their stable of highly-recruited WRs, aside from Marvin Harrison, OSU's WR corp didn't stand out-his injury cost them the game against Georgia.

Even watching this weekend's Giants playoff game, pure one-on-one speed is not the only way for a WR to get open or have an advantage over the DB for the ball. Hearing KLS's comments on his route at the Rose Bowl made me wonder where was this all year...hopefully the new WR coach can produce more of these situations.

And it seems to me, just like the OL of the recent past (prior to the new OL coach who is gradually leaving his mark on recruiting and player development), if a receiver didn't come to Penn State with good to great skills, the time and coaching at Penn State didn't significantly improve them...more reason for the coach's exit.

And for the life of me, I cannot understand the success WVU has in WR recruiting competition with Penn State. For a while, many years ago they produced NFL receivers, but their team has been a joke since RRod left and they joined the Big12-and I find much less pleasure in saying so than others on this board make similar comments directed at the team just north of WVU. I miss the annual games against WVU. It is too bad the conferences are aligned with revenue (mostly TV) streams. WVU was a big loser in this model.

As is often the case, you're a little shaky on the facts, Wally.

Stats for Cephas per game in 2022 were close in catches and yardage to those of Walker; Cephas played in 9 games, Walker 12.
Cephas had a huge season in 2021 --- 82 catches for 1240 yards and 9 TDs. Is that enough to be considered a "game breaker at Kent State" -- I'd say so.

It is not surprising you would offer a 100% superficial argument based on fantasy statistics. The facts aren't all that shaky. He wasn't a game breaker when you dig a little deeper. He is a quality possession receiver with some speed (his highlight film confirms it) that plays in a stat padding air raid passing game against lower tier competition.

I'm waiting for the official announcement of you as the new WR coach....and expect you to coach Cephas up.

PSU opens with WVU at home in early September.

Funny, given that when you show up, threads tend to turn into nonsense.
Speaking of nonsense, this post of yours from 2 months ago was a classic.

Regardless, I think we lose a number of contributors, either due to eligibility, the portal or to the draft early. I think the question is, who do we lose beyond who we expect to lose. There will be some unexpected departures as well. I would put the following up there potentially starting with…
Nickolas Singleton – No inside information but fits a specific profile of likely transfers

Curtis Jacobs

Malick Meiga

Sal Wormley

Hakeem Beamon

And now the clown show starts. Typical Blue White Illustrated thread. All goes well until the group think is broken then things fall apart.
Alright then change the narrative and make a contribution. Stubblefield is gone for whatever reasons and he isn’t coming back. Who do you think he should be replaced with?

Cephas has played against better competition than our high school recruits and he has proven himself to the point that he is a highly ranked 4 star portal player. Portal players who have already played at the college level tend to have a smaller risk factor than high school recruits so their upside potential tends to be not as great but their downside potential is not as great either. Kent State does play against good competition out of conference. Last year, Cephas played against Georgia, Washington and Oklahoma. He had 6 catches and over 100 yards against Washington. I think he can put up the similar numbers at Penn State if he becomes our number one receiver.

Remember, Antonio Brown was from the MAC. Don't be such a Debbie Downer all the time.
