Football Penn State Freshmen Intros -- Lengthy DE Joseph Mupoyi

I like this kid at 6-6 and 240. if he can get up to 260, that length will really help in edge rushing to mess up throwing lanes for those quick bubble screens or dropping back into coverage in some blitzes.

Should have expanded on ‘very new to football’. How long has he played? Did he play other sports? Is he from another country and was not exposed to football at all?

Foreign kids that never played or went to games don’t understand the nuances of the game. Takes a while to learn and develop instinctive reactions.

I always shudder when people talk about player's "length". I prefer height or reach to describe those physical properties; length means something irrelevant to football to me.

the idea is how long their reach is. For example, Joey Porter Jr. has very long arms. And when you look at tens of a second in a 40 yard dash, you can also make that up with "length" or "reach". I haven't done the math but a tenth of a second in a 40-yard dash is something like 4 inches. If your arms are 4 inches longer than a 5-9 DB, you can run a slower 40 and still be in a position to knock the ball away.

For a DE, who tries to swat away a dig route to a TE, RB and a WR on a quick out, 4 inches is massive. It can be the difference between a pass being swatted away or a 25 yard gain.

Length is, indeed, an issue.
