Football Penn State opens as early underdogs for two crucial games next season

Well both are in the top five and Day is 24-2 in the Shoe. Tough place for any visiting QB, especially a first-year starter.

Yeah, looked to see if the by line was Mr Obvious.

But talk about burying the lead, the real story is the early Heisman Hype with Drew Allar tied with Tennessee QB Joe Milton at seventh. And a couple familiar names ahead of him …..Michael Penix Jr and Bo Nix.

Personally, I would have put Singleton on the list before Allar as he is already a proven star.

Fun read but these prognostications are pretty worthless. We can count on tOSU, UM, GA, and AL being top-notch competition. Other than that, who knows? Nobody expected TCU to be in the playoffs nor did anyone expect Tennesee to challenge.

Allar is a huge mystery because he hasn't played. I note that winter workouts are all about Beau. tOSU is unsettled at QB. We are really thin at DT. Iowa could be good with a decent QB. Wisconsin has a new coaching staff. There is so much yet to be learned that these things are an interesting read but not worth investing.

Yeah, don't know what to make of those winter workout reports. Should we be happy about Pribula, concerned Allar is not getting more love? Does it mean anything? Is it little league participation trophy stuff, hey this guy has not been called out yet make sure you mention him. I think it all meams very little at the end of the day. They are not going to tell the public any inside scoop.

yeah...is it just about "effort" as opposed to effectiveness? Are they just trying to keep Beau from porting out? Has Allar phoned it in? I have no idea.

100%. Those workout warrior stuff are all about motivation. Basic coaching psyche 101 stuff.

I think there are two big question marks in the B1G this year.

The first - and probably the biggest unknown - is if OSU can finally field an even average defense. Let's be honest, with any kind of defense, they win the B1G and probably the NC last year after the blew a 14 point, 4th quarter lead against Georgia. Calling their defenses - the last 3 or 4 years - pitiful is being complimentary.

The second revolves around the PSU offense - and more so - if Allar turns out to be even close to the high expectaaions most are throwing his way. And, of course, much of Allar's success revolves around the OL play which will have to do a stellar job of protecting a not-very-mobile Allar in the pocket. If that happens, PSU can beat any team in the B1G

If PSU's offensive line can build on what they did toward the end of the season, I believe that it can have an offense that can bludgeon opponents like Michigan has done the last two seasons, and also insulate Allar until he finds his way. As Michigan showed in the last two seasons, you can accomplish a lot with a great running game and just enough passing to keep a defense honest. Then, if Allar develops into a truly elite qb, PSU can be a playoff caliber team.

Pribula strikes me as a grinder, effort guy. He also may be like a Tebow and can't get enough of the weights and workout room. He has talent for sure but not approaching Allar's level. We absolutely need him and the coaches know that so we need to keep him motivated and happy.

Have no idea about Allar's work ethic but I am not concerned unless we see something. After all he did win the #2 role last season and that doesn't happen without effort especially for a freshman.

Allar can move back there. He is not a statue.

Frankly, I think the reports about who is doing well in winter workouts is good for keeping PSU football in the news and for the kids who are recognized but I am not sure if it means much in the grand scheme of things. I could be wrong but I think these workouts involve mostly non-football activities like weight lifting. If I am right about that it reminds me of one Bruce Clark’s comments. Forget the year but it was when there were lots of stories how much various Maryland players could lift and Maryland was actually favored. After the game that PSU won fairly comfortably, someone asked Clark about all the stories about how much the Maryland players could lift and Clark responded with what were going to do this afternoon lift weights or play football?

I agree, I think these tend to be weight lifting and fitness sessions to feed the beast so to speak which are diehard PSU football fans like us. The real deal starts with Spring ball. Don't get me wrong, S&C is hugely important but Beau Pribula is not going to beat out Drew Allar because he can out bench him by 10 pounds.
