Football Penn State WR coach Taylor Stubblefield no longer with the program...

It's crazy to think a coach would try to take any credit for accomplishments of guys he coached--just insane.

Wish him well but it's the weakest unit on the team and the recruiting has been disappointing and not improving. As much as you don't want to have ANOTHER new wideout coach, it's probably time.
Weakest unit? D line, O line not any better. LBs past Jacobs and AC had nothing. He recruited 4 star guys last year.

Which ones? General concensus was that we couldn't land any stud WRs and that they underperformed all year. Just curious. You seem to have a different POV that I'm interested in.

Strange that Cephas verbals and Stubbs is let go the same day.
Yes something going on with that combo move.

Gattis did a wonderful job. Corley was a disaster hire that was brought in to coach RBs and then they had to do something when Seider suddenly became available.
Gattis was a horrible receivers coach. How many scholarships did we sink into his recruits? How many did we waste? For a coach that is 90% recruiter, he didn't recruit well and he was abysmal at the coaching side. Not as Stubblefield is by far the best of the three as a coach and nearly equal to what Gattis actually did.

surprised no one else mentioned this until now……
Unless a crime or violation was committed, James wouldn't make this move without knowing the next step. He has someone lined up. It's just speculation for us here until all the HR T's are crossed etc.

Whoever it is will be Franklion's 18th offensive coach in 9 years.

He has to stabilize this and elevate the level of competence to compete with the big boys. Its not there.

Hasn't been an impressive bunch since the clan from 2017 left.

Defensively he has had 10.

I wonder if he pissed off CJF over the big recruiting weekend? Maybe he lost a big fish by being lazy or did something dumb. Maybe he was insubordinate.

Perhaps you forgot we just won 11 games including the Rose Bowl. Perhaps you also forgot that coordinators and position coaches routinely change even at places like Alabama and Ohio State.

Lots of interesting names discussed in this article. Sounds to me like Kraft lined up some extra cash for Franklin to use to upgrade one or more of his coaches and this is where Franklin wants to spend it.

Not a bad idea considering the top 4 teams every year have boatloads of talent at WR.....

Offensive coaching talent at those schools compared to PSU is quite a gap. I know, I know, the $$$... OK Krafty ante up. But comparing the Ala, O$U, Ga., Clem, LSU, etc... offensive coaching staffs over the last five years may be another reason for not closing the gap.

Something I find curious. Stubblefield's tweet announcing his departure came before CJF's. That suggests that the firing was quite sudden, and unexpected, and Stubblefield wanted to get in front of the news and own the narrative. If you read it, it doesn't suggest any kind of joint decision but that he was clearly let go. I am willing to be Stubblefield doesn't feel he deserved it and is pretty POed. Just a guess but typically the HC makes an announcement and the assistant confirms with some kind of feel-good "doors close/doors open" or "the path/journey" messaging. This doesn't feel like that.

My other thought is that if CJF found a top talent WR coach to take the job, that person must feel really good that PSU's passing game can take them to the next level of coaching. And that isn't just the WRs but QB. If the QB can't deliver the ball, the WR isn't of much use no matter how good they are. So the hype about Allar must be more than just internal.

How many coaches leave Alabama at the end of each year?

If he needed to be fired so be it. Franklin has to do what’s best for the program. But that’s a poor comparison. While people leave Alabama virtually every year they usually go on to better positions. Rarely are they fired.

On your first point, I do get the sense Stubblefield did want to get ahead of everything and get it out there first. I actually found out about it about 3 minutes before Stubblefield's announcement and by the time I checked his Twitter, it was there. He definitely came across as quite upset, understandably in his post.

Also, yes I think the hire is probably already close to being made, I'm not sure just yet who that hire is going to be but I don't think he fires Stubblefield unless he was pretty sure that whoever was replacing him was going to be a sure fire upgrade.

No one as mentioned this happened two days after his Father in Law passed away. That has to really hurt and not a good move. Hard to not be emotional and upset considering.

The tweet reads like a resumé for future potential opportunities. Also, very grateful to his players but doesn’t mention Franklin and just hints at fellow coaches. “Great football minds”….

Others have pointed to his employment history. But coaching, especially college, is probably the one career with full expectations of job jumping from the start and throughout a career. Would have to look at each move and see how many were moves up and how many were ‘starting over’ types. If he has a history of lateral moves perhaps it is a personality issue.

Whatever the cause I thank him for his efforts here and wish him and his family well through this difficult time and in the future.

Unless Staley gets fired (which may well happen), Beatty is safe.
I’m a Chargers fan. I’ve defended Staley all season. Chargers dealt with a ton of significant injuries at key positions. But my views changed on Staley last game of the season. He played starters 90% of a meaningless game. Mike Williams got hurt, Bosa aggravated an injury, and Herbert got hurt on a play. No reason for those guys to play. On top of all that he blew at 27 point lead in playoffs, 3rd largest playoff come back in NFL history. Good chance Beatty could be looking for another job.

It's fair to criticize Franklin's in-game coaching (though this has improved), but his tireless work ethic, his recruiting success, and his relentless pursuit of elite coaches (see Manny Diaz) are almost without equal. I agree with Dylan, this was done because Stubblefield has been quite good, but not great, and CJF likely has someone GREAT lined up to replace him.

WE ARE!!!

Let us know when you are ready to match spending with the big boys who can buy our coaches at will.

I don't understand the reaction of "yeah I saw this coming he was a bad recruiter and the weakest link of our coaching staff". This was not an obvious move. I don't think he is the weakest link. I think that goes to D Line coach. It has to be a case of another guy is lined up and is just so much better or better credentialed. Plus maybe Franklin doesn't get along with him for whatever reason or maybe he did something. I am not saying TS is the best WR coach we have ever had or is irreplaceable. etc just that I thought he was doing a solid job when you look at the WR room, recruiting haul last year, Dotson and PW. I know there are question marks like are any of '22 recruits going to pan out but he did get them. He is no Hartline and maybe Franklin wants a Hartlinesque guy. Great we all do. Why didn't he get that guy 3 years ago? Maybe unavailable, etc.

The other thing that is a head scratcher is if you look at performance and weak links then you gotta look at Trautwein at the end of last season yet no move. Who is our D-Line coach, I don't even know but c'mon you cannot say TS is performing below that and I would say better. Finally, Pry, think about if Va Tech did not come calling, no Diaz and then where would we be? How many effing 4th quarter collapses did we have with that guy? I'm still pissed about the '17 Rose Bowl and the '17 and '18 O$U games. Also, I doubt winning the Rose Bowl happens with Pry at the helm. Ask Va Tech if they are happy right now. Point being why didn't Franklin can Pry? If the performance standard of good is not good enough then he should have been gone. Just seems like an odd move, a double standard and TS has a beef. Again, I am not some avid fan of TS just trying to look at this objectively as an organization move. At the end of the day Franklin better have a really strong candidate lined up.

Agreed....the only caveat is if CJF was upset about something that occurred over the weekend. Let's say a major screw-up on insubordination of some kind was cause enough for CJF to act now as opposed to later. Maybe CJF doesn't have the next person lined up. The only caveat there is why Cephas would select PSU if his position coach had just been fired.

Yes I think your last point is a big one.

Zero chance Cephas got Stubbs fired.
just to be clear, I am not speculating that he did. But these people have big egos and other is a pecking order. I am not saying it happened...but lets wildly speculate. Its Junior Day, a big event with lots of high end kids visiting and lots of planned activities. CJF comes in and says 'here is our program, this is what we are doing, and this is what we expect out of the WR room, RB, LB, DT, DE, CB, S, TE, OL, Qb...." They split off into position groups. A kid brings something up and the position coach says "hey, don't worry about what the old man says. This is how we run our WR's and if I get fired for it, you can just portal on over to my next gig!".

Again, not saying that happened. But in the fast-moving college football landscape with both coaches and players now being completely untethered, it certainly could. Add in complications with transfers, NIL, and many other factors that allow the player complete freedom, the challenge with keeping your players and assistants in line has become increasingly more difficult.

Highly possible, but I’m still sticking with Stubblefield forgot to order the donuts for the coaches pre junior day meeting.

This might not be the last move made.

Ask Va Tech if they are happy right now.

Va Tech might not ever be happy again. They made their run to relevance in Miami's probation years in a weak Big East. They then won 10 games a handful of times in the ACC between FSU runs. And that's it. All under one coach, who probably stayed too long and gave up his grip on Virginia recruiting.

Pry has his hands full. He's either gotta start winning the recruiting battles in his state (ones that we have cherry picked recently) or develop guys at a decent level like Pitt.
