Hey, this looks like one of my fake news headlines, doesn’t it? I only wish that were the case.

This Daily Collegian article just has my jaw dropping. But I guess there must be a market for this kind of big picture cluelessness. WTF.

Thanks for supporting our guys, Zach Allen. You got a plan? You might need one.

The writer is spot on!
“Hole at 157 pounds plagues Penn State Wrestling amid unbeaten season. Everyone has their own kryptonite eventhough we are 14-0 in duals we are 1-13 in dual meets”

This part rings far less like there’s a clue in this kids head though:
In a conference with 10 schools ranked in Intermat’s top-25 dual-meet rankings, a gaping hole in the roster is a problem.

🤦‍♂️

That is an irresponsible headline. Take it from one that can relate, that will not be taken well.

The Writers Headline is Spot On:
Hole at 157 pounds plagues Penn State wrestling amid unbeaten season

Spot on? No it is not, just wish I could share more.

1-13 at 157 pounds is a problem and Gardner coming back is not an accident.

I like your posts! But you telling me I’m wrong but can’t say why is Bull Crap, weak response

Everyone here knows we have a hole at 157 - just liked the writer indicates.

I’ll be honest, I don’t look at it as being a hole. I see it as the byproduct of having studs lining almost the entire lineup and others in redshirt waiting their turn. Cael has been almost flawless building championship contenders some that qualified only 8 or 9 guys. In my opinion, sometimes you’re not gonna be as strong as you’d like at a couple weights when you used schollys on so many 2,3 and 4 timers including freshman not even using a year of eligibility yet. And yes, it’s totally fair of you to call them holes…most people do. I’d just rather call it something else but you Im a homer so you’ll have to cut me some slack. Lol

It's a cup half empty headline, when the cup is nearly full. Again, without question it is irresponsible. Fans that live there are too focused on winning, and fail to recognize the sacrifices of the wrestlers (human beings). They have been de-humanized. They are not robots or something put on earth for your or other's personal satisfaction. They are 18-23 year old young men.

I apologize to everyone for being a bit cryptic above. Let's just say that it's not a good look when fans get too used to winning, and some take on a behavior that does not represent the values of the program.

Penn State wins the title still but I wouldnt expect much from Gardner!

I'd say the article is generally pointless and unnecessary.

Everyone paying attention to PSU wrestling knows 157 has struggled. And the insight offered in this column is essentially transcribing match results and a few quotes from Cael's weekly media sessions.

To me, this reads as a slightly more grammatically correct polished version of some of the complaining we read here.

It's often the case that the headline isn't written by the writer of the piece, and I've been bitten by that reality myself, where the editor oversold in the headline what I was actually saying in the piece. But the article below the headline isn't much better here.

I could almost forgive it if 157 was a weight where we had reasonable podium expectations this year, but the weight was always going to tough, and you'd have a hard time finding anyone two months back willing to predict otherwise.

That perspective, along with the fact that the team is otherwise looking great, render this piece a bit gratuitous.

Still, it's a measure of the program's success that articles like this even get written. The top programs and sports teams all suffer nitpicking when things are good. The kids will be alright.

Full disclosure, I was adamant Joe Lee would AA this year. Hoosier was another but…. Lol

Editor: “Hey, did you see that Penn State took out Iowa on their home turf this weekend and is a clear favorite to win it all? Had some really exciting matches go right down to the wire. They could have 6 finalists and 7-9 All Americans, which could be historic for the program. A lot of potential story material there.”

Writer: “Nah, I think I’ll write an article about how they are not winning matches at one of the weight classes. The hole there is like kryptonite.”

My take is the article was not written to inform us here in the wrestling room. We already understand the situation with the weight classes and chasing another Title. Rather in a short story for the Student that is a causal or not even aware of the Penn State Wrestling team.

- Penn State Wrestling Team looks unbeatable at 14-0 (Good News)

- All Teams have their own Krypotonte (True)

- We have one glaring hole at 157 (True)

- He credits the guys at 157 for wrestling tough close matches against higher ranking guys (True)

Just my $0.02

If the Collegian had their house in order the way Cael does, they'd be a world class newspaper.

The main problem is the use of the verb "plagues." If the team was plagued it would be failing or struggling, which is hardly the case. It's also disrespectful to the guys who have been representing PSU at 157. No one has questioned their effort or character, and they seem to have the full support of their teammates.

Does anyone else gulp and say “oh shit” when they see that Roar replied to their post? Lol. Only one other guy does that to me and it’s Jefe. And I don’t say that to be negative, it’s actually an indication of the respect I have for them.
Exactly the feeling I got above when Roar replied to me. My first time ever I believe being called out by Roar.

The problem is, the way the article is written minimizes the effort of the three or four young men that are trying like hell to fill that hole. The article could have been written in such a different way by approaching it from that perspective, rather than the "we have a problem at 157" perspective. Imagination and looking at things from a different perspective are what separate great writers from the masses. Zach has just proven that we have a hole in wrestling coverage at The Collegian.

The Writer gives Terrell credit for these tough bouts:
“Barraclough lost a close 2-0 decision against Iowa’s No. 12 Kaleb Young in his most recent appearance and lost in overtime in the prior meet to Michigan State’s No. 19 Chase Saldate”

Same with Negron:
“Negron almost completed an upset win over Lehigh’s No. 8 Josh Humphreys back on Dec. 5, losing 5-4 after a last-second takedown was reversed”.

He’s giving the guys props for wrestling tough matches.

There may be a “hole” at 157 (eg, getting qualified there is a tall order) But why is it a problem? Do you think it will be the difference in our title hunt?

Yep there's 77 other Div 1 wrestling programs that would love to be in PSU'S plague shoes.

Zach? Is that you?
Nope!

I address your post with facts from the article and thats the best you can do. The writer gives credit with instances of tough wrestling by our guys at 157...,,...but lets blame the writer

Some advice on and from the Gardner, that is Mr. (Chauncy/Chancy) Gardner in "Being There," an old but great film starring Peter Sellers as a "slow" and challenged man who grows up on TV as a youth (and doesn't know the "real world") but comes to advise the President and other figures with his child-like folk wisdom. Is The Gardener (at 157) a solution to the riddles of this long wait and "weighty" issue as we head into the season of spring?

Nope!
