Penn State Wrestling Plagued by Some of Its Wrestlers

The main problem is the use of the verb "plagues." If the team was plagued it would be failing or struggling, which is hardly the case …
The 2016-2017 Golden State Warriors were given Pancreatic Cancer and Ebola by having to start Zaza Pachulia alongside Durant, Curry, Thompson, and Green! ;)

I want to see Cael send 10 NQ's to the tournament someday in the near future. Seeing Brands do it chaps my ass.
It’s coming within the next 3 years if not sooner . In fact, I’m still predicting there are guys on our team right now that will be on a team many will consider PSUs best ever. I know that’s saying a lot but I feel it. I have my eyes on one recruit in particular that I think will secure it if certain guys move up a weight in the future.

Nope!
Just a guy having fun on a message board
I address your post with facts from the article and thats the best you can do. The writer gives credit with instances of tough wrestling by our guys at 157...,,...but lets blame the writer
Listen, I was just trying to have a little fun. But I'll give you some honest answers to the points you make.

1. With most printed articles whether online or on paper, the headline tells the story. Here is the headline:

Hole at 157 pounds plagues Penn State wrestling -

How does that sound if you are the 20 year old kid they are referencing (or the parents)? But let's move on to the article:

2. Here are the opening sentences:

Everyone has their own kryptonite.
Penn State has a weakness of its own, even though it looks unbeatable with a 14-0 record season.

Pretty telling where this article is headed if you ask me. Let's continue with the very next paragraph:

Despite beating four top-10 teams, in the current Intermat rankings, in No. 2 Iowa, No. 4 Michigan, No. 7 Arizona State and No. 9 Cornell, the Nittany Lions have one glaring hole in their roster, and it resides at 157 pounds.

Let's continue. It surely must get better for these lads:

Penn State dropped the first eight bouts at the weight class before Tony Negron finally broke the drought against Maryland’s Lucas Cordio, beating the Terrapin with an 11-2 major decision.

Since then, 157-pound wrestlers have lost their last five bouts.

OK, the pain must be over. Let's continue reading:

In a conference with 10 schools ranked in Intermat’s top-25 dual-meet rankings, a gaping hole in the roster is a problem.

Ouch. I guess they are a gaping hole AND a problem.

Now we make good by pointing out the following:

However, to the wrestlers’ credit, they haven’t gotten blown out very often this season, only giving up two major decisions and keeping it close with wrestlers that outrank them.

Barraclough lost a close 2-0 decision against Iowa’s No. 12 Kaleb Young in his most recent appearance and lost in overtime in the prior meet to Michigan State’s No. 19 Chase Saldate. Negron almost completed an upset win over Lehigh’s No. 8 Josh Humphreys back on Dec. 5, losing 5-4 after a last-second takedown was reversed.

OK, that probably made them feel better. So let's follow up with this cheap barb:

Still, team points aren’t awarded for almost winning.

We may disagree on the tone of the article. I think it is a hack job on kids, by a kid writer.
You may feel it is fair and balanced and I respect that opinion. I just disagree with it.

3. I think that as a student journalist young Mr. Allen doesn't present himself very professionally. In his position I would take my beanie off, have a nice shirt on, sit at a desk in a well lit area with good posture. I would refer to Coach Sanderson as "Coach" or "Coach Sanderson" I would ask questions with an enthusiastic voice instead of sounding like he was just awoken from a nap. But that is just how I have advised my kids to handle those situations. He's not my kid. But I bet he has not ingratiated himself to Cael with that article.

Editor: “Hey, did you see that Penn State took out Iowa on their home turf this weekend and is a clear favorite to win it all? Had some really exciting matches go right down to the wire. They could have 6 finalists and 7-9 All Americans, which could be historic for the program. A lot of potential story material there.”

Writer: “Nah, I think I’ll write an article about how they are not winning matches at one of the weight classes. The hole there is like kryptonite.”
Spot on!

I’m assuming these are student writers?? Are they doing this for a grade? I mean, maybe they get extra points for readers reactions both positive and negative. Keeping them coming back for more per se….

Yes, I’m trying to make excuses for him. Don’t tell Spencer.

I don't expect a Pulitzer winning article out of a college paper sports section. I don't believe my standards here differ from others. I didn't see the tone as very representative of Penn State's motto "Making Life Better." Then again The Daily Collegian is independently published by the students.

What does the collegian want a Pulitzer Prize for this article? Where have they been all year, old news get with it

I had similar thoughts. I get that it's Zoom, and sports journalism isn't the best-dressed profession, but it takes minimal effort to present better. It's not his job to necessarily ingratiate himself to Cael--he doesn't work for him, he covers him, but it's also the case that Cael needs the Daily Collegian less than the Daily Collegian needs his occasional cooperation with respect to access, so at the bare minimum you'd want his respect and you get that by conveying professionalism.

Jim Gibbons said he presented himself well.

Is it possible this guy wanted to write but was assigned to a sport he doesn’t want to cover? So we get this kind of story (and the aforementioned lack of professionalism)?

Looking at it realistically, as things stand now, there are 5 weight classes where there looks to be a pretty significant difference in performance at Nationals between the two teams 149, 157, 165, 184 and 197 (I didn't include HWT because of Kerk's performance vs Parris relative to Cass's performance vs Parris). Again, as things stand currently, Iowa would probably out-point PSU at these 5 weights by something on the order of 10 to 20 points net. As close as the other 5 weights are between PSU and Iowa it's going to be difficult to make up the difference on placement points alone unless PSU goes 5-0 or 4-1 in outperforming them on placement to make up difference on placement alone. The other way they could make up the difference is on net bonus points earned relative to Iowa. In any event, I'm not sure you could really say probabilities are on PSU's side as things currently stand - could PSU make up the difference with net placement points at 25, 33, 41, 74 or HWT and net bonus point differential between the two teams? Definitely. Is it the likely or more probable outcome? Not necessarily imho.

You really are a drama queen - where precisely did I say the end was near or that things were hopeless? Pathetic really.
Reality is not a town that many on this board choose to visit. This time....I agree with you 100%*

Mr. @Johnbrooks told us Cael never gets pissed. After reading this article, he’s got to be close to being pissed.

It's often the case that the headline isn't written by the writer of the piece, and I've been bitten by that reality myself, where the editor oversold in the headline what I was actually saying in the piece. But the article below the headline isn't much better here.

I could almost forgive it if 157 was a weight where we had reasonable podium expectations this year, but the weight was always going to tough, and you'd have a hard time finding anyone two months back willing to predict otherwise.

That perspective, along with the fact that the team is otherwise looking great, render this piece a bit gratuitous.

Still, it's a measure of the program's success that articles like this even get written. The top programs and sports teams all suffer nitpicking when things are good. The kids will be alright.
Agree 100% with this.

If you read the article though - it's not bad at all. Just an unbiased and not all that doom-and-gloom look at 157, which is totally fair - I've bet there have been numerous articles that are all positive, sometimes you need something different.

The headline is the ONLY issue with it.
