I love the deal and keeping him around. He's one of the leaders, if not THE leader, on that team. No idea how the cap situation is going to work. Only have about 6M in cap space with just 9 forwards, 6 defenseman and a goalie signed for next year. The Letang contract is the only bad deal. Sheary almost has to be deal to keep Rust. Would they move Schultz? Going to be an interesting summer after, what is hopefully, another Cup run. Hoping they don't try to move Kessel this summer....

I dont think they wanted to contiue to carry 8 D men. Could have rented Kane but went long term with Hornqvist which I think is a good move. He's a very hard guy to replace and though the last two years of the contract may end up hurting, this also shows they are all in with him. They could buy it out once the next CBA happens anyway. Guentzel Crosby Rust
Hagelin Malkin Hornqvist
Sheary Brassard Kessel
ZAR/Kuhn Sheahan Rowney/Simon

Letang
Dumoulin
Maata
Schultz
Oleksiak
Hunwick
Ruhwedel

Then whatever is in WBS. They'll keep Rowney. This looks very tough and is cup run ready. It's also the best roster I could think of to go up against Tampa if and when that happens.

I think the NHL anticipates the cap going up by about three million next year.

I don’t like the length of the deal. Guys in his age range, 4 year max. The rate is about right. Simply put, when you have big contracts, you need a bunch of kids and rookie contracts to step up their game.

I agree. They're banking on the kids being able to get it done.

I understand why they gave him 5 years even though 4 years would have made more sense. He probably would have wanted more than 5.3/year if he was only getting a 4 year deal. He could have probably gotten 6M/6.5M on the open market per year for 4 years.

Pens now have 7 guys (Sid, Geno, Phil, Hornqvist, Letang, Maata & Domo) sign through at least 2021-22. Hard to complain about that...other than Letang :)

LaTurd ya mean sir!

They just had to lock up Horny. He's that guy who will stick his nose into every crack, take a beating, and score those dirty, greasy goals at the crease. The dude can be downright scary at times (like the other night) with the way he plays the game. Like he has a spare body in a closet somewhere. This team could be something to deal with for a long time.
