Pep rally ruined

The AD is supposed to monitor the academic standing of athletes and take remedial action if there are problems. Barbour didn't, at least not until the problem had been allowed to fester for years and news of it was all over the media.
Not a Sandy supporter at all. I think she's a phoney and coward. In fact I think she should have never been in consideration for the position and she makes Judas Joyner look competent.

Having said that I get what you're saying but at the end of the day aren't the student athletes responsible for their own success/failure in the classroom? Don't they all have more than enough support available to them? Aren't they provided with the best tutoring programs money can buy? Don't they get EVERY conceivable break that normal non-athletes don't have access to? Aren't they afforded special judicial treatment when they eff up? These athletes are spoiled in our college sports crazed culture. Maybe we need to focus more energy on why the athletes aren't getting it done in the classroom and not put this on coaches and AD's.

When Mark Yudoff stepped down as the president at Cal, the new President decided that it was better to pay Barbour $500,000 per year to count paper clips.....just so that she couldn't do any more damage.

But, I suppose you have more insight into Tsunami's prowess than they did.......or maybe the new President just didn't like having women in positions of power?

LOL

sounds to me it's more like when the new Head FC comes in , he has to hire 'his people', and instead of just manning up , and paying Sandy her salary, he thought he could run her off by counting paperclips. It's good work if you can it, you sound jealous they haven't promoted you to that job.

Well, in fairness, Sandy's Cal Bio touts the tremendous academic achievements of Cal's student athletes (I shit you not)
Aside from the ICREDIBLE irony of touting student-athlete academic success....when we all know Cal's grad rates absolutely PLUMMETED....you can't have it both ways.

Sandy - and all these other overpaid gym teachers - love to tout "student-athlete academic success" as one of their crowning achievements.

These two ditties - I shit you not - are included in her Cal Bio:

"On the academic front, the average GPA for Cal's 29 teams is nearly 3.0 and the women’s golf team achieved the highest team grade-point average in Cal’s recorded history when it posted a 3.46 GPA for the fall 2012 semester. More than 175 student-athletes annually earn academic all-conference notice, and 13 teams have received national recognition for their NCAA Academic Progress Rates over the last four years."
and
"Director of Athletics at the University of California since the fall of 2004, Sandy Barbour has guided Cal Athletics through one of the most successful periods in school history, a tenure marked by championships, innovation, facility modernization and revenue growth."

Obviously, the idea of just saying any damn thing you want, spinning like a top, and counting on the bulk of the unwashed masses to gobble it up....is not limited to politics :)

that's your response? Attack the poster?? Good thing you are here to edumcate the masses. So here we have Art explaining she had to get fired at Cal because of her academic record, and here you are saying she had a great academic record. so which is it??

But again I glad you are here, to keep the masses informed. Maybe you will sent out Readers Digest subscriptions to everyone. LOL I can explain it to you, but I cant make you understand.

The best tutoring services in the world are worthless if they're not used. And yes the students are responsible for attending tutoring sessions. But let's be real. We know that large numbers of varsity football and basketball players could care less about education and probably aren't prepared to do college work if they do. As long as universities maintain that these kids are "student-athletes" and not hired guns, they're going to have to sit on these kids to get them educated. This is true pretty much everywhere. if Joe & Co. didn't do it, PSU would be no different than Oklahoma, etc.

On this we agree. So that begs the question, is 'success with honor' a PSU thing or a JVP thing??

I love the fact that Joe "owned" this and that Sue taught illiterate athletes that had no business being in college to read and write. That's great and going above and beyond... But the success or failure is always going to be on the student athlete and they are getting EVERY advantage to succeed at EVERY major university. Whether they choose to take advantage of that is up to them. They are treated like GODS - yes even at PSU.

Sandy's job is to make sure all those programs are in place and staffed by the right people and run properly and in accordance with the rules. At the end of the day it's up to the student athletes to take advantage and excel. It's all about personal responsibility not some programmatic approach to grad rates.

If you believe that, then you can't criticize other schools when their kids don't graduate. Penn State is not bringing in kids with better academic credentials than the vast majority of schools (the number that do you could count on both hands and still pick your nose). The reason that PSU succeeds where other schools fail is that prospects are told up front what is expected of them in the classroom, they buy into it. they are given a schedule mandatory of tutoring and study hall sessions AND coaches and academic advisors sit on them if they fail to attend. A laissez faire attitude on the part of schools, with the exception of Stanford, just ain't gonna cut it.
