PIAA Team state tournament begins today

District 11 was so damn good when I was wrestling long ago....Nazareth-Easton-Catty-Northapton-were always great. Little Palisades had several real hammers too-just not enough depth.

Top freshman Mac Church (Waynesburg Central 106) lost 4-3 to Beca's Tyler Kasak, who just dropped from 113.

My 8 and 10 yr old daughters go to Springford school district. I never knew they had a good wrestling team

Speaking of top Freshman, Hayden Cunningham looked good at PIAA AAA duals with two 1st period pins :) :14 and 1:44). He's matured physically since I last saw him wrestle. He boasts a season record of 30-2.

Just getting started

SOCO finally gets the monkey off their back tomorrow...I predict

Perhaps it's all wrong. :D

  • High schools recruiting.
  • Benching a starter because they are not the right gender.
  • Forfeiting.
  • Non sequitur reasoning.
  • The flat earth model.
  • Unnecessary movie sequels and remakes.
  • Wearing socks with sandals.
  • Internet message boards.
  • Bulleted lists.
you forgot.... Redshirting...

Reynolds vs Southern, Who you guys got? I got Nazo winning pretty easily and I’ll take Reynolds in a tight one

In AA consi semis, Saucon Valley 34-33 over NDGP by fall in the last match.

AAA consi semis, Beca leading Seneca Valley 24-10. Herrmann beat Herrera 4-0 at 132.

Anyone know if there is Nazareth-based talent on any of the Catholic or private school squads (Becahi, Blair, etc.)? Cerniglia (ND) is a Naz kid, correct? Anyone else?

These stands are kinda empty
In 1999 Bald Eagle Area won the team duals championship. Back then only the championships were wrestled in Hershey, so Bald Eagle wrestled McDuffy High school at Clarion's gymnasium. Standing room only. In the finals at Hershey there were about 1/2 the number of fans. Granted Northampton in a protest sent out a team of backups, but the point is that for whatever reason the state duals in PA have never been well attended.

Last 4 matches:

AAA finals: Nazareth vs. Waynesburg Central
AAA 3rd/4th: Beca vs. Erie Prep

AA finals: Southern Columbia vs. Reynolds
AA 3rd/4th: Saucon Valley vs. Chestnut Ridge

Don;t remember who they beat but Bald Eagle won all 13 (at the time) weight classes in the finals. They also finished that season ranked #1 in the country, which was amazing for a school of that size. They were an AA school wrestling up at AAA and won team and individual state titles that year.

Nazareth clinched the AAA title. 32-18 with 2 matches left.

Beca took 3rd AAA, 45-15.

If you think I'm gonna defend NDGP too, you're reading too much into my words. I'm not gonna defend them.

Thats CalltheStalls job, he has been calling for an NDGP dynasty all year ala Becahi to start this year, whoops!!! Pump the brakes, I bought the hype too I must say(wink)

I was at that tournament. Bald Eagle Area beat Upper Perkiomen in the first AAA finals. I think the score was like 53-0. BEA was loaded with seniors and were ranked #1 in the country --- though I think Brookville beat them in a dual during the season.
All Upper Perks kids were freshmen and sophomores - though they were pretty good. One of them was Derek Zink, who AA'd at Lehigh a couple of times. The other final was Brookville vs Wyalussing Valley(?). Every kid at every weight for both teams was good. I think Brookville pulled it out.

You are right about the Northampton coach throwing a hissy fit and refusing to send his varsity after Northampton won D11 duals. As I recall, his JV got beat by Gettysburg and Upper Perk knocked off Gburg to get to the finals -- just based on memory.

State duals are a great event. Several of the greatest duals I've ever seen were at state duals. The aforementioned Brookville vs Wyalusing was one. 5 or 6 years later, Upper Perk vs Nazareth in the semi's was the all time greatest dual I ever saw --- winner was state champ, and this time it was UP.. They won on a takedown in the last second of the last match.

On the one hand, I'm very disturbed about the lack of attendance at state duals. You get to see the top teams in the state. Some say wrestling is an individual sport, but I've always preferred the team aspect. And state duals are all about team.

But I look at the bright side. I get to sit in Section 107 every time I go to state duals. When you try to buy state individual tickets, Section 107 is never available. So keep not attending state duals, and I'll keep getting the good seats.

That was 2006. Chris Sheetz was ahead of his opponent with a decision. But needed a major to avoid going to criteria, which was in favor of Nazareth. That last second takedown secured the major and the dual and UP beat Easton for the title.

If anyone has video of that takedown, please let me know.

I actually said I thought ND would be tougher in a year or two and could see BECA and ND flipping AAA -AA classes knowing how ND coach thinks and not knowing how long Karam coaches.
As noted within the District 11, I'm a public school fan. I didn't think anyone would hang with Nazareth because of how deep they were.
I actually was not surprised that ND came up short in the Team format. They will be tougher at States. They could have 3 State Champs.
