For all the teeth gnashing over the backup qb situation. The starting O line situation is worse. How’s the portal for O lineman looking next year because this team is DOA with what trotted out there yesterday.

Hell, if any are available now I would be looking. Can't be any worse than the swinging gates in there now.

I would start playing some of the younger guys. Get them game experience. See what you got with them. They are supposedly the future.

One of the things floating around in my brain lately. How can we have the #1 class in the nation coming in, but few lineman on either side of the LOS? IMHO, give me a bunch of 3* rb's and wr's and have them play behind a group of 5* lineman. Same thing on D. Gimme some 3 star corners and backers and have them play behind 5 star tackles..

Not so sure it's an online issue. I think yesterday was all about play calling and the scheme we run. We ran with elite relievers when they were man to man with 8 or 9 in the box, we passed when they had 4 in the box. More often than not it looked like they knew the plays and they knew the snap count.

I have been thinking about this a lot as well. Look, if your Alabama or OSU, you get them all. You get 4 and 5 star linemen surrounded by 4 and 5 star LBs, WR's HB's etc, but everyone else has to get what they can. I think it says a lot about Franklin's priority and how he sees the game to study what he truly values in recruiting. Loading up on big tough linemen each recruiting class is anathema to Franklin. For those paying attention, Franklin has a very clear vision of what he wants in a recruiting class and what he values. If your entire offensive ethos is built around "explosives" you want QB's that can extend plays and top end speed receivers. Of course everyone wants things like that too, but the fact that Franklin has not recruited more lineman, big, nasty, I don't even care their star rating, is telling. Allar of Singleton are not going to do sh*t behind the offensive line Franklin keeps touting out every year. I know Franklin values height in the secondary and is in LOVE with Smith's body at Linebacker, but it doesn't mean you can stop the run. We need big, nasty, guys on both lines and I would start saving scholarships so that we recruit more of them. Sort of the NFL model with QB's(for teams that don't have one), bring a ton in, find the ones that have the "want to", with the transfer portal, you can offload the ones that are not working out any longer. You can't just ask the soft ones you trot out to get "nasty" they have to be "nasty" to begin with. You can change their bodies in the weight room, you can teach and develop technique, but if you simply do not recruit them, you are never going to compete. I don't care how many future NFL guys you surround them with, football simply does not work if you cant stop the other team from running on you and you can't run on them. Everything should be built on that premise moving forward, but take one look at just the numbers of lineman we are recruiting over the last few years and you'll have your answer, we just simply do not value physical line play and this is never going to work in the Big 10 east.

All the other stuff about "having the team ready" "will he/wont he leave" "QB's moving forward" is just noise for people not paying attention. Do we want to have a dominant offensive and defensive line? Yes or not? Are we willing to do whatever it takes to create one? Yes or no? If the answer is no, this program will never make the playoffs and simply will never be anything of real substance in this league. Athletes on the perimeter are simply not enough, Franklin should realize this by now.

Its not the recruiting, it is the development.

recruiting + development + coaching = success

We start three 4 stars and two 3 stars on the offensive line. Two of the 4 stars were .1 point away from being 5 star. The OL is not being developed in the weight room. My suspicion is that it is the offense. All these reads focus on what the defense is doing. We need OL that focus on what we do. Drive people off the line of scrimmage!

They can take this RPO and shove it.

Agreed. At some point you have to have a couple plays and players that just push ahead for a couple yards, if you don't have that, you got nothing.
