Now that all of the weight classes have been ranked by Flo in their preseason standings, I thought I'd take a quick look at the team race. I assume Flo will post their team rankings on Tuesday. To get a jump on that, I took a look at PSU, Oklahoma St., Iowa, Ohio State, and Cornell in terms of how their wrestlers were ranked in Flo's top 20 preseason rankings, per weight.

PSU
125 - 2
133 - 12
141 - 3
149 - 2
157 - 7
165 - 11
174 - 17
184 - 13
197 - 1
285 - 8

Oklahoma State
125 - 7
133 - NR
141 - 6
149 - 8
157 - 11
165 - 1
174 - 1
184 - 14
197 - NR
285 - 4

Iowa
125 - 3
133 - 2
141 - NR
149 - 3
157 - NR
165 - NR
174 - 5
184 - 11
197 - 4
285 - NR

Ohio State
125 - 1
133 - 7
141 - NR
149 - 10
157 - NR
165 - 2
174 - NR
184 - 7
197 - NR
285 - 17

Cornell
125 - 17
133 - 5
141 - NR
149 - NR
157 - NR
165 - 8
174 - 3
184 - 1
197 - 19
285 - NR

Only time will tell how accurate Flo's predictions are. Injuries can't be accounted for in preseason predictions, nor can how true freshmen will do in the season. And as someone posted in one of the preseason threads (I think it was Roar), if you look at seedings versus final finish at Nationals, even with a season's body of work from which to prognosticate, things do not always go as predicted.

Going just from Flo's preseason rankings (can't stress that enough), PSU seems to be the most complete team. Oklahoma State may have (I didn't do the math) a higher ranking per average for 10 of the weights, but they are hurt by not being ranked at 2 of the weights. They seem to be the two teams that on paper are most likely to be in competition for the team title at Nationals.

Iowa has very high seeds at 6 of the weights, but is not ranked at 4 of the seeds. Ohio State is rather similar, with very high seeds at 5 weights and a 17th ranking at a 6th weight, but they are also unseeded at 4 weights. Cornell has very high seeds at 4 weights, a 17th and a 19th at 2 other weights, and is not ranked at 4 weights.

Way, way, way too early to do this. NCAA Points, not including Bonus, based on Flo's Preseason Rankings...Formatting stinks, sorry!! School first, then points, then number of wrestlers ranked, selected schools only.

Row Labels Sum of Pts Count of SCHOOL
Penn State 81.5 10
OK State 76.5 8
Iowa 67.5 6
Michigan 56.5 9
Virginia Tech 55 7
Ohio State 51 6
Missouri 50.5 6
Cornell 49 6
Nebraska 35.5 9
Lehigh 32 10
Illinois 31.5 6
Wisconsin 29 3
Edinboro 26 2
Oklahoma 20 2
Minnesota 15.5 2
Pittsburgh 0 1

Only one thing is certain...this will be a fun season. I see it coming down to the last five weights in the finals. Who is planning on going to the Virginia Tech match?

I plan on going and dragging some fans from the Richmond, Va area... no cost for the match...

Me and my brother are going. I know a number of other people that are going and the Wrestling Club has a bus trip planned. I think VT might set an attendance record with this dual.

The Cassell Coliseum seats 10,000, but I believe their largest crowd ever was 3378. I'm guessing too that they set a record.
