Thought I would start a new thread as the Kaindoh thread had plenty of discussion about PSU's relative lack of success in head to head recruiting versus ND and UM. IMHO this is simply not true, PSU has done just fine against these two and the numbers back this up. Consider:
Using the Rivals data base, starting with the current class and including each of the three prior classes, PSU has offered a total of 26 players who were also offered by UM and who chose one or the other. Of these 26, 12 chose PSU and 14 chose UM. So PSU was successful with around 45%. Of the 14 who chose UM 3 are from MI, 1 from WI and 1 from OH; areas that UM should do better in than PSU. 1 is from NY (Wheatley, a legacy), 1 from MD, (Hall, a 2017 OL), 1 is from PA (Hudson) and 5 are from Jersey. No doubt Harbaugh did a great job in Jersey last year; and 1 is from TN (the WR, Johnson).
In that same time frame PSU offered 23 kids who also had an ND offer and chose either PSU or ND. We had less success with ND than with UM as we got 9 and ND got 14; a success rate of around 40%. Of the 14 who chose ND, 2 are from IN (Barajas and Werner), 1 is from MI, 2 from OH, 2 from NJ (Wimbush and Quentin Nelson), 1 from MD (Mustipher), 1 from TN, 1 from FL and 4 from PA (the current group of Lugg, Adams, Hinish plus Josh Adams).
So in total, in this time frame PSU has offered 49 kids who also were offered by either UM, ND or both. Of those 49, 21 chose PSU. That is a success rate of just about 43%.
Now, consider that in a typical year PSU will likely offer around 75 kids (per Ryan we have already offered 64 for the class of 2017 so IMO the 75 figure is actually low). If we take a full class we will sign 25 of the 75 for a success rate of 33%. So our success rate versus both UM and ND is actually higher than our overall success rate.
Of course statistics can be manipulated but IMHO these numbers in head to head competition with ND and UM are pretty respectable. Let's remember they are two big time programs. It's not like we are talking about MD and RU. Further, since Franklin has taken over we are clearly ramping up recruiting efforts to include big time prospects including kids like Barajas, Werner, Brederson, Boudreaux, Kareem, Johnson and some others who previously may not have gotten a PSU offer either because of geography or other factors.
Others may disagree but IMO we are doing, and have done, fine against both of these schools. And like it or not, ND is ND. They will always get kids from PA and NJ, especially those who attend Catholic high schools (Wimbush, Hinish, Adams, Mustipher, That has been going on for decades.
