First, they play in a very small stadium with an 11 am start time there. I don't think the crowd will be a factor.

Not knowing too much about their personnel, they played Nebraska pretty tough and led at halftime with their interim coach in his first game. It sounded as if the Cornhuskers came out very flat.

Purdue doesn't seem to have much of a running game but relies heavily on a decent passing game. Their defense has given up a lot of points.

I suspect that we will need a good pass rush to keep them from making too many big plays. If we can limit them to 21 points or under, I'm guessing we win big. I see our offense giving them fits and perhaps we break a return this week. Barkley will have a great day.

PSU 34. Purdue 17

It is a noon kick here in Indiana.

Purdue's stadium is very small (for the Big10). It will only be about 60% full depending on how many PSU fans show up.

I haven't watched much of Purdue but it sounds like they are trying every trick play in the book and blitz every down. They have nothing to loss and are coaching and playing like it. I believe they just got their best RB back.

The difference between Maryland last year and Purdue this year, is that Penn State has a game's worth of tape to study with the new staff, instead of being the first team in, like we were with Locksley last year at Maryland.

They run a lot of gadget stuff, they have one go-to receiver who you need to bracket if possible, and Blough will turn it up and run occasionally. They do not run the ball well, and they do not stop the run, at all. 250 per game rushing they have given up.

They do play hard though, and they won't be a gimme: We will need to show up to play football from the start, and we will need to be sharp. Moorhead will game plan for them, and we will take what the defense gives us.

Play a solid game and we will win, but don't expect any kind of blowout. Hopefully we can pull away in the early 4th if possible. Every game is a battle, don't forget.

It should also be noted that Nebraska played, easily, their worst game of the year: They came out very flat, they played VERY tight, and they were very predictable, all game long. They STILL won the game, but never pulled away because of how they played, AND they were the first team in with the new staff, they seemed off, all game long.

From what i saw from the Nebraska game, the McBarkley backfield (trace +saquon) should have a good day running the ball, but our defense better not blow assignments because their qb is above average and was able to hit some big passes against the Huskers

Nebraska has come out flat in the first half in every single game this year. That's their MO

Nebraska is a .500 team
Just that - thus far - no one they've played has been willing to beat them :)

Now, as for Purdue:
Very much a match up that should play in PSU's favor.........but plenty enough legit B1G level players on that roster, and Penn State will certainly have to play a legit game in order to get the road win

This will be - by far - the most sophisticated and capable pass offense we have faced to date......and the most pass-heavy offense. Multiple legit receivers - - - and a relatively accomplished (a bit undersized) QB
That "should" be favorable wrt PSU, as the strengths of the D would appear to be rushing the passer (and being able to rotate 9-10 guys up front to keep them fresh) and good cover corners

Defensively, Purdue is very vanilla......4-3 front - VERY little blitzing
Their front is relatively solid......with a young Freshman kid replacing Replogle (whos been out) - but he is a 320-330 space eater (which they otherwise haven't had up front.....probably think of a younger, and not quite as good, version of the big space-eating DT for Pitt).....and he will likely continue to get PT even if Replogle is back. Their front is athletic enough to get some reasonable QB pressure (but nothing like OSU).....back 7 is veteran - but fairly pedestrian.
Didn't review the game against UNL - - but I doubt there would be any significant changes since the change in HC.

Purdue returns Jake Replogle their best defensive lineman from being out for two weeks. Jake has made several preseason watch lists. He is a consistent player who plays every down meaning he doesn't take plays off. I've known Jake since he was in elementry school. He's a great kid and a very good football player who played well against us a freshman. Some of you may remember Jakes brothers who played for Indiana, Tyler, Mike and Adam. All great guys and former players of mine.

Thanks...good stuff.

Purdue plays a pro-style offense and has a big, strong QB. But his surrounding cast simply isn't very skilled. On D, they've got a good D-line but the rest is marginal. As someone already said, the McBarkley offense should have a good day. When we are on defense, they probably resemble Temple more than anyone we've play so far.

My guess is a solid, workman-like win. Perhaps 31-10. I don't see us lighting it up but can't see them staying with us either.

Yes, I remember a replogle that gave PSU offensive line all they could handle. I was about to ask you if that was the same kid who maybe transferred.

Capacity listed at just over 57,000 about the size of many pro stadiums. Pretty sure West Lafayette is EST, so could be worse... In addition, Purdue is really bad and they just fired their coach, so as "road game" venues go, this certainly isn't one of the worst....that's for sure.

Just a note--Indiana gave up their long-time objection to Daylight Savings time about 10 years ago and are now on the same time zone as PA (excepting some areas near Chicago and down in the SW corner, from what I recall).

I imagine the team will come out ready to play. I was so excited after Saturday that I wanted to strap the pads on and play Sunday. The team has to be sky high and ready to show it
