Q&A with Carter Starocci

I am so excited for him next year. If the rumors of him struggling big time in the room his 2 months are true, it's a terrifying thought. Means his improvement rate is rapid and it's continuing.

He comfortably beat a ton of good opponents this year. He did whatever he wanted, he got out from bottom with no issues, he took them down at will and when he chose to ride, nobody could get out from under him. While he didn't wrestle the absolute best competition, he just was so far ahead of everyone else that it gives me a ton of confidence.

His first 2 months aren't rumor, it's what he has said publicly.

Gonna disagree about his competition -- he faced Mark Hall daily. Plus a steady diet of Cenzo, Brooks, Shak, and Beard. At least some time with Jason, DT, and Bo. And on his worst days, he got Casey.

174 empties next year. Kemerer is the clear favorite. Labriola, Romero, and Valencia will be tough but beatable. If Amine goes 184 and Lewis stays 165, that's the only competition better than his victims this year.

Ha, excellent framing!: "And on his worst days, he got Casey." I love, love, love this undercurrent narrative of a beast living among beasts.

Did Ruth ever get him, before he left?

Quickness normalized for weight... Cassar had a massive advantage over even the light heavies. The dancing bears had no chance.
His ability to stuff the head and re-attack was simply not fair. One of my favorite recent rec hall moments was when Jennings finally shot on Soulja Boy in the dual last year, and Anthony moved like the wind for the effortless go behind: I sit pretty close to the visitors bench, and I’ll never forget the look Manning gave me when I shouted to Jennings “Shoot again! Shoot again!”

I can't think of anyone in the NCAA right now or in any recent year quicker than RBY. It's a near impossible thing to measure accurately, but I think he would win the eye test. Who would be quicker? Once you add weight, quickness generally slows, but you could calibrate it to other body sizes (e.g., Steveson and Cassar are very quick for big guys; Nickal, too.)

Nahshon Garrett might be the only one in the ballpark.

I thought Nashon Garrett was the quickest lightweight I've seen. His quickness gave Nico huge problems, and Nico was quick himself.

RBY is in that category.

**sorry, didn't see El-Jefe beat me to it. Great minds, etc.

The two guys I thought who were faster than a speeding bullet were Shawn Bunch out of Edinboro and Greg Jones from West Virginia. Before the echo of the refs initial whistle was done they were behind their opponents with that ref holding up two! It was amazing that Jones's speed made top athletes at NCAAs look like they were in quicksand.

Hopefully, I'll be saying the same about Carter.

Speed runs in the Spearman blood. Steve was fast too, but not quite fast enough....

Sorry in advance.

Carter will quickly become a fan favorite. He has all the tools, including some you can't teach (quickness). While his skill sets are great, the best part is ... he's a student of the sport, and does everything right (eating, sleeping, academics, practice hard, easy to coach, etc.) to be the best version of himself. Quickness, strength, and all the other athletic attributes are profoundly improved when separating yourself by the lifestyle you choose. We have lots of examples, and these young wrestlers lots of role models.

Personally, I think Nolf might be the quickest I've ever seen - he was like a cat waiting for his prey to do what he was looking for.... and when they did it WHAM Nolf would throw them to their back with any of various feet-to-back TD pinning combinations.

When Anthony realized that all he had to do was shoot against Derek White, another of the dancing bear clan and use his ridiculous quickness against a "statue"... the results were easily flipped and flipped to the tune of a major.

I dominate in eating and sleeping. Those skills come naturally to me
