QB Development and the new OC

I think we will see a couple main things. First I think you have to look to the Minny game as a good gauge. The PSU defensive line was far superior to the Minny offensive line. We didn’t get close to their QB in that game. I think you will see a lot more passing in the middle of the field, a lot more slants and crossing patterns. You will see the ball coming out of the QBs hand quickly on a majority of passing plays. I think you will see much less reliance on the deep pass and you will see PSU attack within 20 yards much more often. Try to get the receivers in space making YAC.
Pretty sure I read that Minnesota was one of the top teams in the country for time QB held the ball before release. So don’t expect quick throws

My guess is KC is an upgrade over RR but people expecting dramatic change are going to be disappointed. CJF has been clear he was looking for someone who isn’t looking to make dramatic changes. Also he can only coach up players as far as their talent allows.

I disagree, I think he can protect Clifford and design routes to the middle of the fiel
Could playing against better defenses in the 2nd half be the reason he was less effective?
Sure, absolutely.

Will Fries had 2 bad plays (unfortunately in a row) other than those plays , he played ok. The guys inside really struggled in pass pro as did #53, so I think people need to stop signaling out Fries, he actually played pretty well, except for those 2 plays. I rewatched the game, have you?

I think one can shift blame to Clifford on the two plays Fries got beat on equally as much as a playbook that seems to lack hot routes/quick passes. 1/3 to each is fair.

Still, Cliff has gotta see that, step up and away from it (Trace was great at this until he got hurt his last year). Expecting every single lineman to block perfect every single play is beyond absurd.

Did you notice on the replay that Memphis seemed to be selling out on a lot of our plays? It seems that is why the middle was so open on our runs.

Well, we know he game planned the absolute heck out of us, but his team could only score 17 against Wisconsin at home with the West Division title on the line and their growing prestige at stake. PSU should not have lost to them. Minnesota's 2018 season scoring body of work was up and down. Hopefully, with the better talent PSU has he's setup to be even more successful. I agree that we're already setting our expectations so impossibly high when they are not met the board will go into its usual meltdown. I'm hoping the absolute best for KC as he meets this tough new challenge.

Ignore the posters here in regards to the Minnesota game. We were an OPI and or an INT away from winning that game and drastically shifting the narrative of this season.

We adjusted to them in the second half to the tune of 7 pts allowed and 132 yards given up.

Our offense dug us in a hole in the first half. 2 INTs, settling for FGs instead of TDs (particularly the one right before halftime from their 3 yard line).

This was another prime example of "run Journey Brown, damnit!" He was 14/124 averaging 8.9 ypc. Sure, he had a 0, 1, and a 2 yard carry to match his 2-3 big runs, but here we have a RB getting positive yards, breaking every 4th run big... and we had 3 drives (i think) we came out with pass play calls 3 consecutive downs. KC will love this stable of backs. He won't care to slip in a 6th OL to get big. If he can get us 3 competent WRs, next year will be fun.

Additionally, Wisconsin is a stout team this year. I'm not certain if we would have beaten them. They played two very good halfs of football against Ohio State; sadly for them, they were spread across two games and they got throttled in the adjacent halfs. The Illinois loss was ugly, but no different than OSU falling to Purdue last year.

Wisconsin, additionally, had our film and Iowa's to game plan for the Gophers. Swap spots and you might have a different story.

Definitely saw Memphis bringing multiple players on some of the blitzes, including linebackers and secondary. Journey Brown and Ricky Slade took advantage with quick steps and a burst. Also noticed some good blocking on the 2nd level, especially by Menet.

An excellent analysis. An 11-2 season was remarkable for this team against everyone's expectations. It was a team of heart, strong will, fight, and character.

Our oh so close recruiting misses were also part of the story. Justin Fields vs Will Levis? Justin Shorter may be a "miss", while we're still waiting to see what George can become. Yet Purdue can plug in Rondale Moore and David Bell and they become instant stars. Some of it is just luck and circumstance and if you keep working hard and relentless like JF does enough of it will wind up on your side.

Will KC's offensive planning be good enough to keep us ahead of the coming programs like Nebraska, Purdue, Indiana, Minnesota, etc.? No one is going to stand still and wait for you. Can he help make us consistently better than Wisconsin and Michigan - and finally beat OSU? Can he be innovative and creative enough to keep us ahead of their defenses as they plan against him?

As much as people rag on Rahne he beat Michigan, Washington, Iowa, Wisconsin, etc., and had OSU on the ropes. For good or ill (11-2 anyone?) his play calling was a wild card that the DC's were still trying to figure out (and many of us too ☺). KC will be a known and experienced quality now with better talent. Let's hope that works out to PSU's good.

Listening to a couple of the media guys, they think the short yardage offense will be much better - because the QB will get under the center and their will be a blocking back (aka fullback) employed.
That's funny because the Minnesota Rivals guy that does all of their Xs & Os breakdown says they never go under center. He also added they rarely ever use two backs.

I tried to link up some of his breakdown but it's all premium content. Basically, not much is going to change. QB will always be in the gun, single back sets and a little more run heavy than we've been.

Well this is on other sites and it’s not premium content: Minn ran the RPO much more than we did this year. They were 6th in the country I think and we were in the 30s in RPO frequency. They also run longer developing pass routes. Their QB held the ball longer than almost any team but they ran a lot more often than we did. I read that they do go under center occasionally.

No I haven’t. I also said elsewhere that I like Fries and am glad he’s coming back. I agree that he wasn’t the only offensive lineman who was less than stellar at pass blocking. But since you re-watched the game did any of the other offensive lineman have any plays as poor as those two consecutive ones by Fries?

yup, several

Ah yes, some fans favorite player, the backup QB. I am sure Franklin will hold an open competition at QB and Clifford will win on merit.

Sluggo. C’mon man. Maybe I was too harsh on Fries, but those two plays were dreadful. A QB has a right to expect at least the opportunity to check his initial read. Also, I may be wrong but didn’t Clifford complete a pass on one of those 2 holds by Fries?

the first was an off setting penalty for DPI, off the top of my head, so he wasnt credited with a penalty. He was called for holding 1 other time (the next play) other than that he didnt have any other holds. Then announcer gets on his ass a little and picked on him. Early in the game, they credited a sack to his guy, but it was actually 74 guys that got to him. Watch this travesty on the left side of the OL, after all this time, and after OSU abuses us with this stunt, you would think they could block at T/E stunt by now. They try, but 74 is late sliding over. and here the announcer is picking on Fries so you think he is the problem.

You quoted me, but mentioned sluggo...

Regardless, yes, Fries had 2 awful plays in a row. No, he wasn't alone in pass protection breakdowns.

Can KC get Clifford back on track and protected? I get he does not coach the O-Line, but Clifford really had a subpar back half of the year and I was as excited about him as anyone. For all the good and bad of RR, I feel like our QB's regressed under him in addition to getting totally beat up in this offense. Sure, RR cannot be blamed for WRs dropping passes or the line not blocking rushers(although fries has been exposed as a guy you can't put on an island against speed rushers), but our WR's and QB's seem to see ghosts as the season goes on and the defenses get better. I am really hoping KC can do a little max protect offense with some quick timing throws and reestablish Clifford's confidence early next year. If we want to get to the playoffs, we need to have a healthy, productive, confident QB next year. Thoughts?
SC and WL seem like nice kids. Neither is an AA QB waiting to happen though.

Yeah that wasn’t good. On the other hand, I think the result would have been similar if Clifford rolled right since Fries wasn’t exactly mauling his guy on the play either and he got help from the RB. Bottom line there is lots of room for improvement on pass blocking on the part of all the offensive lineman. Let’s hope the next OL coach can fix it.

disengaged too soon?? Like it was 62 choice? I dont think so, he was beat.

He kept looking down field an extra second before realizing he had no LG help or at least a buffer of body's to slow the guy up.

Yes, he got beat, but it didn't appear that he tried turning with the guy at all to give Clifford the opportunity to step right. Just my judgement off his second later look back. I could definitely be wrong.

It's a bad habit of our OL. Looking for another defender, eyes instead of instinct.
