Question for board:

We are spending far less, although we have started buying more online. Since the start of this have been to butcher and Dollar General 2 times, and PLCB once. That's it.

Not really. my wife bought a couple of food items that aren’t in our local grocery online. Then we decided to go back to Meijer where we normally shop.
My son bought a car seat cover online. But that’s not new for his shopping habits.
To add to the conversation, we have prepared 95% of our meals versus 2-4 meals at restaurants throughout the week’s 14 meals.

Since I usually spend most of my spring days at the baseball field with my boys and coaching high school and travel baseball this situation has caused me to be spending more locally and online as I have been home and doing home projects...cleaning staining deck, painting RV, fixing RV Roof, cleaning shed, installing new RV flooring, repairing water fixtures in my house, just to name a few. Luckily I have been working my normal schedule and continuing to get paid, which is allowing me to afford doing this work!

Still can't wait to get back on the field with my son and his team. My middle son was playing his senior year, so really sucks for him!

….but have definitely spent more this spring!

Have you (and/or your family) spent more money ordering things online in the last six weeks than what you would deem normal?

Hsve your spending habits gotten worse? Abd by that I mean primarily credit card expenditures.

I have not but then again I never really bought stuff online.

Just curious.
Oh yeah, no doubt.

So, what all are you spending money on? Essential items, or just "stuff"? Or justifying "stuff" as essential? And does the online shopping give you (the general you, not one person in particular) some level of thrill?

I spoke with one my vendors, whom I have known for 20 years, and she said she has spent more money in the last six weeks than the previous six months - I assumed it was setting up her house (she recently got divorced), but it's just "stuff" - mostly clothes (which considering that she is now forced to work from home, she won't wear).

Less. This is perhaps because early on we ordered a web camera which took forever to arrive and this made us think of the new normal.

I've spent more than normal, mostly online.
Here's a sample of my purchases ....
A Power Washer
A Stihl Combo Weed wacker + the lower attachment
Hand sanitizer
3 bathing suits and a ton of other stuff for gf (for Mother's Day and her 50th coming up)
A used Mt bike for me and another for my youngest son (16)
180 rolls of tp (135 given away) and 40 rolls of paper towels
Lots of high quality steaks (ribeyes and hangers) from Flannery Beef
Some Monkish IPA's from California for my birthday present to myself
A laptop for my oldest son (18) who is planning to start at Arizona State August 20th (the one who was supposed to start at Michigan last fall but took a gap year I guess - a choice I struggle with - UM v. ASU)
adding a couple more .....
50 KN95 masks (took a little over 3 weeks)
300 nitrile gloves

Less overall but I just wore out a pair of shoes that I walk in daily so I just did the rarity of purchasing a new pair online.

We used to order stuff online all the time, now we’re doing it less because it takes so long to get. Half the fun was to be able to order something and get it in a day or two...now you’re waiting almost a month for a lot of things.

less- normally I'm buying new tires, chain and drive sprockets for the bike in the spring, but I did all that last fall. Gas usage (and price) is down and I never (well, very rarely) buy clothes. We aren't traveling or going out to eat, either. Casino is closed, too.

today's the day ..... buy that drone!

Buying a lot more food to go. A couple local brewery's have step up their game with make at home foods and beer curb side. One stop shopping

I spend other people’s money. It’s a blessing to be highly desirable.

We’re spending a lot more online but since we’re not going out to spend money on other things I think overall we are spending less. I can’t remember the last time I bought gas.

Spending a lot on groceries more than anything; mostly because we're doing 'store pick up' and the wait time to get an order is about a week. And it's a crap shoot - no idea what will or won't be in stock. And since we place orders every 3-5 days, and don't know what we're going to get in our next pick up, we are really stocked up on bread, milk, meat, etc. But, we're not spending on any entertainment, eating out, gas, etc. We have ordered the kids some toys but not much really.

WAY less. Just the savings on gas alone for both cars has been more than noticeable. Paid off my card balance with the stimulus check and will be finishing off another loan this month.

Spending A LOT online. Far more than normal. Anything from hand sanitizer to booze. Recently ordered DiFarra pizza and Russ and Daughters online.

Not surprisingly, Amazon stock is up. But surprisingly, VISA stock is down.

Our spending is actually down quite a bit.
We both work from home, so our vehicles just sit in the driveway probably four days a week. We haven’t stopped at a gas station in over a month.
We do takeout food a couple nights a week, but it doesn’t come close to what we usually spent on weekend nights out.
And we rarely buy anything online. We’ve always been pretty disciplined when it comes to frivolous spending....the difference between want and need.

I'm spending more online for certain on non-essential things, but not having to run around 6 days a week to ball fields is really saving money. Gas and eating out as our schedules were all over the place. I still order out 2-3 times a week just to try and support some local restaurants, but that is still much cheaper than what I was doing. It's actually been pretty eye opening to my wife and I how much we spent eating out when we are running all over the place with the kids.

I have been spending a lot less overall, but I did splurge online for a couple of huge boxes of Utz Dark Russet Kettle Cooked potato chips to indulge in when I started working from home. They are hard to find here.

I guess technically I’ve been spending more but for me it’s been taking care of deferred stuff around the house that I can do here and there, or have a contractor do. Out and about spending on restaurants and such is a trickle. So it’s like substituting durable for non durables, so not bag overall.

I’m fortunate to still be employed, and I limited my losses on investments/retirement.

I think we’re probably Spending close to the same amount. Ordering out for lunch or dinner maybe once more a week than usual (which would mean twice instead of once). Grocery bill has definitely gone up but nothing is on sale so that more a result of that and having everybody back in the house.

I've done grocery shopping online for delivery since "quarantining" became a thing. So by extension, yes, we have spent more money because things cost more to buy for online delivery (Wegmans) than in-store. Plus, tips for drivers.

I used some of our "Trump Bucks" to buy needed things around the house (power washer, carpet cleaning machine, etc).

These things said, I wouldn't classify these things as spending habits getting worse. Once the pandemic subsides, I'll be going to Wegmans and Sams Club like I always have.

My wife and I have saved a ridiculous amount of money in the past two months. Of course we order online, but I tend to be frugal and to be honest, I have always spent a lot of money on food and clothing. I have not went out for food obviously, and I don't have a need for clothes that I don't already have.

We have saved enough to pay off about $31,000 in debt. (mostly for our car that we bought a few months ago)

Overall, we are spending much less since we are not traveling, eating out, entertaining, etc. We are spending more online as we mitigate our time out in the world. My wife is sewing masks for the community and has been buying supplies and some household items that we need. We will do our best to jump start the economy at some point.

I've spent a bit more online, but mostly on projects around the house that have been on my "to do" list forever. It's been nice to have time to finally knock some of those things off my list. I've spent way less on other things like going to bars and restaurants, gas and tolls. My grocery and utility bills have gone up but overall I'm spending WAY less.

I crossed over to 60% online shopping a while ago makes me feel like I'm keeping up with the younger generation. :D
It definitely feels like I'm spending more but my bank told me I spent over $1000 less than normal last month go figure.

Spending somewhat less... no more movie theater, weekend entertainment (travel), eating out. But offset partially by considerably higher-than-normal grocery bills with 2 kids home from college.

BTW, ordered toilet paper from Amazon about 4 weeks ago, and it still hasn't shipped. They gave me a ship date range of 4/24-5/5... must be backordered.

Yes, buying A LOT more online, but doing so using credit card information of strangers downloaded from the Dark Web. Having too much free time on ones hands isn't necessarily a good thing

Saw that CHIPS in Cali is writing a lot of tickets for speeds over 100 mph. Folks enjoying the empty highways.
Just got a rebate From Travelers on my auto insurance for low usage during the pandemic. That was nice.
I gotta ask, since your car isn’t breaking a sweat even at 100, do you ever get frustrated or even bored not being able to exercise it? I’ve always been fun low hp street guy, but a lot of that is $ related too. Is your car still enjoyable at 2/10ths 99% of the time?

It's always nice to have blips of speed, and hear the roar, and get pushed back in your seat, even if it is only an on ramp or a brief stretch.
