Football Quick Hits: 10 Thoughts on Penn State's Blue-White game

#11 When there is a significant chance of rain the B/W crowd gets cut in half.

I'll confess, I had planned to drive up the SC this morning but again looked at the forecast and decided to stay home and stay dry. The boss had another commitment so I would have been flying solo and the shopping downtown isn't as fun without her. So I ordered my Rose Bowl hat on line this morning and watched the game on the B10 network. It would seem about 20k-25k other PSU football fans made the same call.....

Could be but the weather turned out to be pretty nice for most of the time. Didn't pregame tailgate this time but enjoyed the festivities after.

Yep, I was almost wishing I made the trip. But this morning my app showed it was raining with the prediction for rain decreasing but still there till evening. The crowd looked small by B/W standards and with all the players returning and all the young talent itching to be exposed if it was a sunny day I'd expect the bottom and sides to be covered. Density is another matter discussed here in the past, but I'm being generous to say 50% of a great B/W crowd showed up inside the stadium compared to recent past sunny days pre-Covid. i.e. from what could be seen from the broadcast.

I was also overruled by my ‘boss’ (and 1 of 2 kids as well) due to forecast and totally regret it! The weather in SC obviously improved, but here at home it thundered much of the the day!

Winners today:
Abdul Carter - as good a sophomore lb that PSU has had since....#11 Bowman. Fast, Instinctive, Strong....will be a handful for offenses this year.

Omari Evans - nice game seemed to be the one receiver to get some distance from the DBs

Dani Dennis-Sutton - No OT could stop DDS. Would have liked to watch an OLU versus DDS Battle.

Tony Rojas - defending passes, making open field tackles..... seems to put himself in the right spot as a true freshman.

Ta'mere Robison - although not as visible as Rojas he also was all over the field.

Entire DB crew for Blue and for White....... not a weak spot amoung the DB team. No easy throws.

Losers today:
OL - but specifically Caeden Wallace and Jimmy Christ.....they could not stop Chop, DDS whichever DE was matched up against our OTs did not go well for the OTs.

-----------------

I would not put the QBs in the loser camp, QBs played ok, lots of pressure from defense, TEs were mostly invisible for the day with Johnson and Warren sitting today. WRs were ok......Saunders made some plays, Evans had the best game.....not much separation. Durant made some plays....nothing stood out to me from any other DTS.....but generally all of them crashed the pocket on passing plays......OL struggled more than I would had hoped.

Almost scared us away too. Was pouring before hand. We didn't tailgate pregame and it scared away others we had planned with which to go. But the wife and I kept watching the forecast and decided to take an umbrella and risk it. Was a fun day anyway.

This is Manny Diaz’s second year with this defense. By the end of last year they were damn good. He has lots of experience and depth back. Little wonder his defenses gave our offenses, with new QB’s, lots of trouble in the B/W game yesterday. They are going to give our opponents lots of trouble too.

Pretty obvious that the defense is for real. There were a number of times the QB was touched, stopping what was or could have been a good play. However, the defense won the day on both the blue and the white teams.

QB play was underwhelming. Accuracy a concern. However, they showed what they're capable of doing and they avoided stupid mistakes.

Evans showed improvement for sure. I kind of liked that Ivey kid (12). Had a little Jordon Norwood in him.

We played Michigan and OSU too conservative on defense in '22. Live by the blitz, die by it. Tight man at least with King. Make somebody beat us. Load the boxes. It's what we are good at. If Michigan breaks a 8-9 man box so be it. They didn't punt last year. We need to be angry about that.

Allar needs that pressure. So does OL. Michigan will overload then confuse us. Practice vs hell, have to play better vs it.

And Christ transfers, kind of called it.

Heard from his family, that they had read that he was on the losers list.....feel kind of bad......

Just joking.

When he first committed, I really liked his high school film. He was a bad dude. He was like the Blind Side dude driving guys into the marching band. Seems as if he got past by. I thought that he was better than Effner last year who got the tOSU DE elected to the College Hall of Fame with the game against PSU and Effner.
