  • Sleepless night so I thought I would put together my yearly wrestling recruiting rankings. I waited until Hidlay committed because he is a big-time recruit. Last year I used the Flo Big Board rankings with #1 getting 100 pts and dropping from there. This time I used Flo's Weight class rankings with a similar system starting with 50 pts for anyone ranked 1st in their weight class and working downward as such:

1. 50
2. 44
3. 39
4. 35
5. 31
6. 27
7. 24
8. 21
9. 18
10 16
11 14
12 12
13 10

I do know that some will rise and fall after Super 32s and that some #1 are more dominant ( ie. Gable ) but this is what I came up with using this rubric. ONLY Seniors included ENJOY!

Rankings: Individual rankings at weight class and total points:

1. Penn State 1,2,2,2,3,3,6 ................ ... .287 Pts.
2. Ohio State 1,1,4,5,12,13,13................ 198 Pts.
3. North Carolina 3,4,4,7,11 ................. .147 Pts.
4. Michigan 1,1,2 ........................ ..... ... .144 Pts.
5. Minnesota 1,1,12 ................ ........ .... .112 Pts.
6. Iowa St. 1,5,5 .... ......................... ..... .111 Pts
7. N.C. State 1,7,8,11................ ........ ... .109 Pts.
7. Rutgers 4,8,8,9,11 ................ ........ . . .109 Pts.
9. Stanford 3,3 ............... . ...................... 78 Pts.
10. Penn 2,5 .......... ....... ........................ .75 Pts.
11. Missouri 5,7,9 ........... .............. ....... .73 Pts.
12 Lock Haven 5,8,9 ................ ..............70 Pts.
12 Wisconsin 5,8,9 ................ ................70 Pts.
14 S.D. St. 3,7 ................ ........................ 63 Pts.
15 Virginia 7,7,9 ................ ......................62 Pts.
16 Oklahoma 4,7 .................................... 59 Pts.
17. Nebraska 5,6 .....................................58 Pts.
17 NWestern 4,10 ....................................51 Pts.
19 Princeton 1 .........................................50 Pts.
19 Az. State 1 ..........................................50 Pts.
21 Iowa 4,11 ............................................49 Pts.
21 Cornell 5, 9 ..........................................49 Pts.
.....
NOTES: Obviously Penn State and Ohio State are clear top two. The next 5 spots are pretty close power-wise. Two schools got multiple ranked guys while others got fewer but have real studs. Not too much difference from 8 through 21. Iowa and Cornell may be at the bottom of the top 21 but they were number 1-2 in my last year's computations. Interesting to compare ENJOY

Outstanding job, Sportfan. What were LY’s rankings? In wrestling recruiting, you really have to to combine any two years to truly understand the landscape because of the 9.9 limit.

Ian, i actually had the same thought, but I was thinking three to four years due to schollarship limitations.

Nice work, but the real question is which of these programs are doing it "by the book"?

Yep, 86, you are probably right. It’s tough with 9.9 ships. You can have 15 studs on your squad all with partial aid of varying degrees.

Maybe better for another thread, but I woke up wondering about the reasoning for the 9.9, and trying to think of another sport treated similar. Is the 15 number the total for the squad or just total getting a share of the 9.9. When thinking about other sports there are substitutions during play, wrestling you start, you finish, or default. Soccer, bball, volleyball, and of course fball, all sub often. Then you have sports like swimming, track, or gymnastics where someone can compete in multiple events. How about golf, are there team limitations and scholarships limits?

Just wondering how they arrived at 9.9.

86 the 15 is my arbitrary number to accommodate the 9.9 limit..... could be more or could be less. Cael and others have to play a little "money ball". No one really knows how they distribute.

Scholarships were 11.0 years ago. A 10% cut across the board (all equivalency sports) gets us to 9.9. You will see this in all equivalency sports, just look at scholarships. You’ll see numbers like 5.4, 6.3, and the like. I can give more detail later if needed. Out of town right now.

Also, I believe 32 of our wrestlers get some piece of this aid, much higher than folks know.

About 1/3 of the way down this page is a table with your answer. Keep in mind, it is Wiki, so may not be perfect.

Thanks for the thoughts, didn’t want to hijack the thread.

Sportsfan, let us know if you happen to have past years info for comparision and averaging. Great job though!

There would be 15 guys this year and then 19 guys next year to distribute aid to. It’s money ball in Wrestling. Need a capologist to handle.
PSU 2017 (2018)
125 N/A (Teske)
133 *Keener (Teasdale)
141 Cortez, NLee (Bravo-Young)
149 *Retherford, Verkleeren (JLee)
157 Nolf, Berge
165 Joseph, Manville
174 Hall, Rasheed
184 Nickal (Wittlake)
197 *McCutcheon, Cassar (Beard)
285 N. Nevills (S. Nevills)

We should simplify and assume the entire roster is getting something, at least book money, with the obvious exception of ROTC guys like Manville.

Reason: the NCAA Academic Progress Rate metric. Every guy who gets even a penny of athletic aid counts -- and buffers against the lack of academic progress at PSU by guys who transferred out (until those guys graduate elsewhere).

Simply not true. Not sure where you got your info, the report straight from the Athletic Department stated 32 individuals received aid last year. Could be as little as books, could be more. Total, if I remember correctly, was 9.66 equivalent scholarships.

I agree with both you and Jefe that nearly everyone receives something for the reasons stated. That said, I think the report you reference was from 2015. Has 2016 been issued yet?

So they didn’t even spend the 9.9? Wow
shhh...we are banking that for 2019.

There is a little known codicil in the NLWC constitution that gives Cael the unlimited power to preserve schollies in time of recruiting emergency.

Roar, no, I have not seen any of the math, but I certainly take your word for it. I assume it is convoluted dealing with 32 different wrestlers and converting between in state and out of state, plus factoring in academic scholarships or ROTC.
My surprising part is I assume they would use ever penny since the limit is so low, at least in my opinion.
I am in awe of what the coaches are able to do! All on top of the actual wrestling part!!

Yes, the report referenced was completed in January, 2017, and submitted this past February to the NCAA, so it represents fiscal 2015-16. The next report won't be available until February/March 2018, which will be for the current fiscal year.

Just for giggles, went back to the 2015 report, which states 9.88 scholarships, and 37 students receiving financial aid.

Be careful with the lingo. 9.9 has nothing to do with money. 9.9 is a NCAA limit. Available athletic money is a university limit under NCAA rules.
