I was thinking the same thing. Public Enemy and Madonna aren't rock either. It really is more of a popular music hall of fame, but that doesn't sound as good. Not sure I consider NWA to be "rock and roll", frankly. Descended from, maybe, like rock descends from jazz and blues--but is neither.
Have you looked at next year's potential nominees? Pearl Jam is a no brainer. I'm not sure that any other act is deserving.RR HoF is ridiculous. They feel they have to admit somebody every year. Maybe they've admitted all the worthy artists already. Now they're just diluting the pool.

Well, at least Deep Purple got in - I think they were the most popular non-RRHOF selection on this board. No issue with those selected though and NWA makes sense given the criteria.
Well, they didn't elect The Cars or Yes this year. Or Chic, who have been close several times.
I think "Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame" is an oxymoron. I thought Rock 'n Roll stood for the anti-establishment and a Hall of Fame embodies the establishment.
That said, too bad they didn't let Yes in last year while Chris Squire was still alive.
The Cars are one of those bands that seem to have disappeared from music. Maybe it's because they aren't touring or making anyone money so they don't get promoted as much.
However, The Cars were on the radio constantly for about 8 years. Should be a shoe-in.
NWA... well that's kind of the opposite of Rock N Roll to me. No idea why they are just selecting random music genres. Maybe they should add Barry Manilow as he is fairly big as well.

Good point; but where else would they get this kind of induction? Is there a Rap/R&B HOF? Honest question. I consider the RRHOF more of an 'American Music' Hall of Fame since Rock n' Roll is so broad and inclusive. I think Joy Division should be in, but I don't know that they're exactly Rock n' Roll.
I don't have many phocks to give about the RRHoF but I still have $0.02... Joan Jett "in" while Deep Purple waiting was mere testimony to how stupid a popularity-contest-driven RRHoF is... It's not much more than a tourist-trap/Jan Wenner stroke-job anyway...
obviously music, like food, wine, etc, is deeply personal.... everyone has (or, used to have) their own RRHoF in their vinyl / CD / cassette cabinet or in their iPod....
I have no issue with Cheap Trick being "in" - for me and many like me - Cheap Trick was a very important rock-bridge from disco into 1981's hard-rock eruption... the Cars also
They can just create categories at this HOF. Like they do at the Grammys. Sort of wings. Here's the RAP wing. Here's the adult contemporary wing.
Change the name to ROR Hall of Fame so it is not 100% rock.
However, putting a band like NWA in ahead of a band like Yes at the current Hall of Fame makes no sense. And again, in terms of music success Barry Manilow considerably higher than NWA. Different categories.
In case you don't believe me... Barry Manilow has 5 multi platinum albums. Another 5 or so single platinum albums.
NWA... two with total sales about 8mm.

To be fair Joan Jett was a 2015 inductee, so she was only in a year before Deep Purple. You should be way more'd that ABBA was inducted in 2010.

You left out Foghat...Joan Jett shouldn't be in the RRHoF unless she paid for a ticket or working there... .that's my point... if she's in, then why not April Wine, Pablo Cruise, Bread, Rick Derringer, Sniff-n-the Tears, Corey Hart, Eric Carmen, Duke Jupiter, and Head East, Uriah Heep...
Excluding Yes this long tells me all I need to know about the RRHF. Complete and utter joke. To everyone responsible for omitting Yes....... "Yours is A Disgrace".What a joke. Talk about bands that had an influence. They should read the Chris Squire tribute page. When musicians such as Geddy Lee, Michael Anthony and Flea are saying how influential Chris was on their playing and music, I guess the morons at Rolling Stone magazine don't want to hear it. The irony is all 3 of those bands are in the R&R HoF.
The outpouring from the music community was overwhelming....and Chris was just one piece of instrumental brilliance known as Yes.

heard a great quote about Yes from Mark Maron (and I am paraphrasing)
"They put Rush's 40 year career in one song - Roundabout"

Yes is nothing but a prog-rock dinosaur. Kudos to the HoF for not letting those hacks in.Excluding Yes this long tells me all I need to know about the RRHF. Complete and utter joke. To everyone responsible for omitting Yes....... "Yours is A Disgrace".

Totally disagree. What I see is a number of artists who should be in that aren't and a number who are, but shouldn't be. That's the problem. I have no problem with Deep Purple or Cheap Trick getting in. They were cutting edge for their time, as was Chicago.RR HoF is ridiculous. They feel they have to admit somebody every year. I think ABBA should be there. Really, I do. No less than Ray Davies of The Kinks was a big ABBA fan. They harmonized very well, were excellent with keyboards, and sold a ton of records. I had one while I was at PSU and wasn't ashamed to play it.To be fair Joan Jett was a 2015 inductee, so she was only in a year before Deep Purple. And EVERYONE on Chicago was an excellent musician. Their drummer, I can't recall his name, is maybe the best rock drummer ever. And they could play anything. Hard rock, soft rock, ballads, whatever. They were really, really good.LONG OVERDUE FOR CHICAGO! They were the #1 selling singles band of the 70's and along with Blood Sweat and Tears introduced us to a whole new concept of rock and roll featuring horns along with guitars and keyboard!

LOL...let me guess? Joan jett fan?Yes is nothing but a prog-rock dinosaur. Kudos to the HoF for not letting those hacks in.
Not so much. However, her work with the Runaways, Black Hearts and solo to me seems a hell of a lot more innovative and influential than Yes. And it is definitely more R&R oriented that that prog-rock overproduced trash.LOL...let me guess? Joan jett fan?
You wouldn't know talent if it hit you smack in the face. Using "innovative" to describe any of her work is a colossal faux pas.Not so much.
