Roster is up

Busiello is not listed? Nor is Ritchie Heywood.

Also noting... Marco Vespa has been around for a while, but this is the first time I have seen him on the roster. First time I have seen David Evans.

No shortage of candidates at 149 ... 10 different wrestlers possible at that weight.

All we need now is the obligatory Rec Hall Parking Sucks thread, and then the season can finally begin.
The new West Campus deck looks to be nearing completion. It's yuge--not sure if it will help with event backups or not.

Not sure what it means but I saw that Adam Busiello and Ritchie Heywood did not certify in trackwrestling and are not on the roster per the comment above. Austin Boone is also not certified on the trackwrestling roster but he is listed on the Penn State website. Everything else matches exactly with the trackwrestling roster.

So if a FR goes at 149, BB or Bearclaw, we could have 6 freshman starters.

As an early conductor on the Bearclaw train, it is kind of exciting that he would prevail over Verk, and possible Beau. I knew from watching him at Edinboro that he had much more upside than Busiello. If this is the level he's at now, it bodes very well for the future since he will surely grow to 157.

14 states represented. Alas, no one from those noted wrestling powerhouses of Iowa or OH !!

PA 15
IN 3 (all from the same street!!)
AZ 2
MN 2
MD 2
NY 2
NJ 2
UT 1
MI 1
WY 1
KY 1
CA 1
VA 1
CO 1

I love the historical tab. It is nice seeing pictures over the years. Bo's pictures are pretty cool.

I liked what I saw in his 2 Rokfin appearances..

Id bet a 3 week old fruitcake that our second team would take it too the Rutgers starters.

Edit, sorry Bordo, I just now saw your similar post on Predictions thread hahaha. Great minds think alike, and ours too.

Indeed you were Wino, great call.

from Black Shoes Diaries:

In today’s media availability via Zoom, Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson spoke about wrestling this impending Big Ten season during a raging global pandemic.

Coach Cael on Covid Protocols:

The kids wear masks, coming in & out of practice. When we wrestle, we don’t wear masks. When we’re in the weight room, the kids wear masks. We’re testing 6x a week.
The NCAA has allowed “extra matches” this season, after a dual meet is completely competed. These matches do not count for the dual meet but do count toward the 4-match minimum required to qualify for the postseason, as well as for postseason seeding.

Coach Cael on these new rules:

You have to have four matches to qualify. One positive test, you’re missing 17 days minimum. Just get to that four-match mark, and the backups...errr.. anybody that has a chance to make the postseason, will get matches. We’re going to wrestle as many extra matches as we can.
Maybe it’s something we can look at doing more of in the sport, going forward.
On this year’s squad:

Coach Cael on these new rules:

On this year’s squad:

On last season’s ending:

On wrestling with no fans in attendance:

On the free year of eligibility:

On the odd year and college off-season:

On the “best team” lineup:

On extra matches:

On the sprint of a schedule and only nine competition dates (and a little about the lineup ;):

On who he’s most excited about watching.

On Berge:

On traveling restrictions

On the future:

Aaron Brooks begins his chase to become a 4x National Champion this Saturday. Tony Rotundo, Wrestlers Are Warriors
Sophomore Aaron Brooks is Penn State’s returning 184-pound Big Ten Champ, who, with the new eligibility rules, can still reach his goal of becoming a 4x National Champion. He joined the zoom after Coach Cael departed.

On Cael saying you’re in better shape:

How good can this team be?

On how he has dealt with the odd year:

(Jp) Remembering a remark from Vincenzo Joseph from one of the NLWC Event broadcasts, I asked Brooks if he roomed with Carter Starocci & Greg Kerkvliet and what their lifestyle was like when they hang out (do they cook together, wrestle in the living room):

On how serious he takes Covid precautions:

On Berge:

On Starocci & Beard:

On wrestling in front of no fans:

On Cael

On the Olympics, and how this year has affected that dream:

86kg Aaron Brooks (Nittany Lion Wrestling Club) VPO1 Maxwell Dean (Titan Mercury Wrestling Club), 10-7 Tony Rotundo / WrestlersAreWarriors
Brooks also spoke to his hometown newspaper, the Hagerstown Herald Mail (Jp; fun fact, I used to deliver the Morning Herald in the 717!) for an article they posted on January 11.

On the free eligibility year:

On practice vs competition:

On his meniscus injury from last year:

On progress:

On the prospects of Penn State extending its streak of National Championships from four to five, after injuries and the pandemic ruined their chances last year.

Clay’s Notes

Expect a lot of different lineups in different duals, especially as PSU sorts through a talented by crowded scenario at 149.

Robbie Howard seems like he’s full go at 125, especially with the free year of eligibility, but I imagine we’ll know right away against Rutgers this weekend.

Penn State sounds like it wants to wrestle as many extra matches as possible, and guys like Seth Nevills, Terrell Barraclough and Beau Bartlett should get a lot of them.

Bartlett could well be the starter at 149 with Nick Lee staying at 141.

While I understand times are a bit odd, I would’ve like PSU to make a number of wrestlers available for preseason media availability.

That being said, it’s crazy how young this team is. Cael mentioned redshirting any and everybody if this were a normal year, and a lot of that is because this team has very few upperclassmen.

Aaron Brooks conducts himself as a seasoned veteran, not as a true sophomore. He’s very comfortable dealing with media and gives thoughtful, inciteful answers when he can.

Hi Sullivan. This is really poor internetting, even for a blog post that's 90% non-original content.

You wanna post a link, a *few* quotes from inside it, some commentary of your own = All Good.

A full copy & paste of the entire content? That's just _________ (could the commentariat crowdsource this blank for us?)

Poor internetting. But we will support your improvement, because we aren't animals.

Gonna need at least 8 of the 6 to score at nationals.
As I type I am working feverishly on cloning Bartlett, Starocci, Kirkvliet, Beard, Van Ness, Lee and others. I already bought the fake noses w/moustache. I am shooting for 12-14 scoring wrestlers........just working out the details. My binder is already 3" thick with notes, calculations and theories. I keep it on top of my fridge so the Brands brothers can't find it :)

Thanks good read. Love listening to him

SIAP: Ironhead making his projections and thoughts on many PSU wrestlers

Jeff made the comment in the article that he won't be making any trips with the team to away matches out of precaution. Any idea who will be doing the radio coverage at these if it's not Byers?

Some great insights from Byers. Thx for sharing the link. Here are some key takeaways:
  • Robbie Howard is still recovering from injury, so we may see Baylor Shunk at 125 early. But Byers expects Howard to be the starter in the post-season at 125.
  • He views Starocci and Kerkvliet as national title contenders out of the gate. Super high praise for both these guys and their trajectory.
  • He expects Barraclough to be the 149 starter. Mentioned Bartlett as a guy who may play a role “presuming he can’t unseat Nick Lee at 141 pounds,” which Byers said isn’t likely.
  • He thinks Joe Lee has a lock on the 165 starting slot, though Mason Manville pushes him in practice.
  • He expects Beard to be the starter at 197 and said he’s working on his well-known gas tank issue.
  • He seems to view Berge (!) as the starter at 157. That’s very encouraging news for Brady’s health. Hopefully this means he’s fully recovered from the head injury.
