Rule Changes Coming?

Every two years the NCAA Wrestling Committee tweaks the rules, and about August publishes an updated rulebook. Input comes from all three divisions. The last update (Aug., 2019) contained fewer changes than normal, as far as rules that actually affected the action -- i.e. most were administrative. The next update should come out this summer.

What changes do you see possible?

In the national finals the circle is electrified

Ref angel can only do Hawkeye matches

Matside officials all have a stop watch

Willie does seeding with a 30 of bud heavy and AKB is allowed a review before finalizing

Flo watch parties are always concluded with a blanket party

Stalemates does more people on the street interviews

Baschmania w cenzo gets the post match interviews but only after the winners get a breather, a hug with family and beverage of their choice

Injuries are forbidden during championship week

The serious changes, in no particular order:

1. Pushout. The boundary stall call has proven a bust -- see the Fix-RBY call, among too many others. Also remove Hoagie's Invisible Fence collar, so he can come back inside the circle without getting shocked.

2. Eliminate stall-out periods in OT. Short of that, make them full 1 minute -- long enough that top has to try to score. See also #4 below.

3. Eliminate RT. Short of that, cap it at max 30 sec increments available only with NF.

4. Max 30 sec riding without NF. Reset if NF scored. At end of 30 sec, reset on feet with no E1.

5. 3-pt takedown? Still thinking about this one ... Cael has favored it in the past.

6. Intentional touching off the mat is a stall call.

Less serious changes:

1. Special Guest Referee Willie Saylor ... to be joined by a group of high-scoring recent NCAA champs.

2. YouTube auto-syncs videos with Byers audio so @nerfstate doesn't have to. Flo prohibited from 3rd party takedowns.

3. Angry Dad section directly behind the Iowa bench. Amine, Ferrari, Gunning, Downey, Suriano, etc., all get a front row seat, not that they'll sit. Free alcohol and Fix Shakes, megaphones provided, and they can move to whatever seats are closest to Terry.

4. Iowa changes its singlets to show Terry Face across the chest. Prominently.

5. Rutgers gets to hang a banner for guys who qualify for B10s.

6. Nobody from Missouri can get a top 16 seed unless they were an AA in the previous year.

7. Stanford AD and president forced to attend NCAAs until Griffith runs out of eligibility. One handcuffed to Borrelli, other forced to do anything Griffith asks pledge week style except without the rules and decorum. Including being paddled. On national TV.

8. EIWA gives up its 2021 over-allocations in 2022.

The problem with the 3 point takedown might become stalling after an early takedown to win a 1 shot match? I'
I'm not actually sure here I'm just throwing this out there as Possible reasons it might not work? I'm in favor of it actually

If “tied” at the end of regulation and one guy has a TD and the other does not, the guy with the TD wins it right there, no OT.
Definitely a 3 point TD.
Anything that promotes aggressiveness and initiating offense, as these two rule changes do, would be favorable.

Here's a novel idea to add to the excitement. Extra team points added according to the amount you beat your seed in the final standings if you place. For example, Griffith was seeded #8 and placed #1 so Stanford gets 7 extra team points. Cap the extra points at 8 per wrestler so that if a #32 seed wins, his team only gets 8 points, not 31. Conversely, team points deducted by the amount you place below your seed, again capped at -8 points for high seeded wrestlers that DNP. This would make the team race really exciting in close tournaments like 2018.

More reason for forfeits at conference tournaments.

Set the pace for the 1st period.

Four points for a takedown in the first two minutes of the 1st period. Three points for the last minute of the first. Two points for the 2nd and 3rd period.

A stalling call while in the neutral position in the 1st period is an automatic point, no warning.

A Technical Fall in the first period is 6 team points. (Unless you are 125lbs)

As in high school rules, coaches have to stay in their chairs during Wrestling. Even in Iowa. One Team point first infraction, second is team point and removal from the gym.

Clarion's George the barber should be mat side at the NCAAs finals. Hidlay's hair when he was moving backwards was all over the place. It looked like Aaron was chasing one of those green haired plastic troll dolls from the 60s.

If Shak can be put on injury time when the coaches had to run around looked in every gym bag in the arena for a hair cap, these other dudes can enjoy the same excitement.

Second stall warning allows wrestler to have choice of position. 3rd warning; point and choice. 4th warning; 2 points and choice. 5th DQd.
It might allow refs to be more aggressive on quicker calls and might give wrestler a chance to rally on a guy running.

All the pace is sucked right out of the match when Tan Tom throws a brick over the exact timing of a first-period takedown.

Never should they go with push out rule. I do not want to see wrestling get turned back 15-20 yrs. Friend talked me into getting season tickets to local D1 in the late 89’s early 90’s. After 3 yes said i cant stand watching college staying with HS wrestling. So boring back then watching guys push tie up push ride ride ride.

2022 NCAA Tournament team scoring results:
